Gunner is such a cool kid. He was playing so nicely with his 3 year old cousin, who arrived with my sister yesterday to help.
Gunner is having his first successful night sleeping his crib so Iām afraid to type too much right now, but Haloās Snoozypod is saving my life! I have that sucker on vibrate (low), and Gunner fell asleep and is staying asleep on his own.
We got so messed up with his sleep arrangements when he outgrew his bassinet, he hit the four month sleep regression, and we went to Pennsylvania for Christmas (slept in a strange crib) all at the same time. Iāll have to work on naps too, but this is promising!
I have also discovered that when I put him in his crib I just have to leave him alone until he sleeps. If I come back in to soothe him periodically, like some sleep training methods suggest, he gets all worked up again. š¤·āāļø
The second night in the crib was a dream! Gunner fell asleep breastfeeding (I donāt give a shit if others disapprove, Iām not going to wake my kid up just to put him in bed) and transferred to the crib beautifully. He woke up after 5am to eat and went back to sleep in his crib with minimal fuss.
I hope this isnāt a fluke.
Naps are not going so well with the crib, but as long as I have the nights mastered I donāt care! Weāll get there eventually.

Ritter Updates
There were some very nice comments on my posts about Ritter, but I thought it would be easier to update on a new post since we have a diagnosis now.
I actually have time to eat and post for once. Iām currently watching Gunner on a video monitor try to nap in his crib for the first time: I put him in while he was asleep, but he immediately woke up so Iām listening to him cry then stop crying then look at the door then start crying again. It is pulling at my heart strings, but Iām trying to stay strong. Iām starting with naps then moving on to nighttime. I have a Halo Snooozypod helping me out. On to Ritter....
The tail stepping incident was essentially a red herring. We had X-rays taken yesterday and Ritter was diagnosed with Lumbosacral Stenosis, also called Cauda Equina Syndrome, which is the spinal canal narrowing at the Lumbosacral joint which leads to the compression of those spinal nerve roots. He is also starting to show a little arthritis in his spine. Ritter is being treated with an anti-inflammatory and a pain killer. He has also been put on rest for one week (think going out on a leash to potty but limited activity otherwise) then we can start to gradually increasing his activity level. When we get him back from boarding on the 18th (family is flying in this week to help with my parents), he'll be starting laser treatments.
This is going to be a lifelong issue. It is probably genetic, but it couldāve been from an accident when he was younger but I canāt remember any accidents. I strongly suspect it is genetic and complicated by his very large size. It is uncommon in dogs under 3 years old (Ritter is almost 2.5 years old), but common is German Shepherd Dogs and other large breeds.
Iām hopeful the laser treatments will help, but we will give medications and rest as prescribed by the Veterinarian as needed. Iāll have more questions to ask when we start the laser treatments. It could have been much worse, but this makes me very sad. Poor doggy. Iāll do everything in my power to keep him comfortable and happy as long as possible.
ā¹ļø Ritter Saga Continues
So after going to the Vet on Saturday to check his tail since he growled and nipped me when I accidentally stepped on his tail (the Vet agreed it was super out of character for him), we started Ritter on pain pills and an anti-inflammatory. Ritterās tail wasnāt broken, but given that my Hubby who is 300+ pounds stepped on his tail recently, the sensitivity wasnāt a total surprise. Ritter hadnāt shown any issues before I stepped on his tail otherwise we would have taken him to the Vet sooner.
The pills should have been enough, but it seems like there is still an issue. Saturday night Ritter got on a bed with my Hubby, Ritterās tail brushed against my Hubby, and Ritter growled at him. Hubby told him to leave if he wasnāt comfortable so he did. Then just a few minutes ago, I came into the bedroom after an impromptu shower (Gunner spit up in my hair while I had him sitting on my chest), and we had another incident. As I typically do, I called to Ritter, who was lying on the floor, to get his attention and gently ran my foot over his lower back (near his hips, on the side of his spine) with light pressure: Ritter growled and jumped up. I gave the āoffā command and he left, but this is not normal. Usually,Ritter makes little happy grunty noises and sticks his butt in the air closer to me when I do this. š¤
Something is not right with Ritter, and I think now it may be back or hip related. It would make sense that his tail would be sensitive depending on Ritterās position if his back or hip(s) were sore. I had Ritterās hips x-rayed as a puppy and they were decent so Iām at a loss. Aside from having his tail stepped on, Ritter hasnāt had any injuries or suspect events. I really hope it isnāt arthritis, but Iām not sure what Iād rather it was. I have to figure out what is wrong with Ritter so he can feel better: I donāt want him in pain, and I donāt want him getting himself into trouble just because he is in pain and the pain canāt be identified. I know my dog hadnāt transformed into an asshole overnight so Iām at a loss about what is wrong.
A Little Good News....
Ritterās tail isnāt broken, it is just super sore. The Vet prescribed a pain killer and anti-inflammatory pill.
My Husband did the damage to poor Ritter then I got to pay the price when I accidentally stepped on his injured tail last night. Funny how that works. š
Updates and Many Thanks!
I wanted to thank everyone for the kind messages and prayers. I plan to respond to everyone individually at some point.
My Husband (I should just call him by his name, Ken š¤¦š¼āāļø), Gunner, and I are recovering and resting at home today. My Dad is now in a rehab center temporarily (insurance will cover for 7 days so weāre working on options). My Mom is still in the hospital with wheezing, and her chest isnāt clear yet. We expect a few more days of hospitalization. Her role as a caretaker wonāt and canāt ever be the same as it was.
My two older sisters are trying to research and make travel plans to come help since they both live overseas. Everyone is trying to help. Iām so grateful!
My Mother-in-law has been a lifesaver and a hero (in addition to my amazing hubby). Ken took off work yesterday to help (thank goodness), and we were still running around all day getting my Dad settled and looking out for my Mom. Iām convinced that if it werenāt for my Mother-in-lawās help, I would be in the hospital too. Despite all the prescriptions I am on, the improvements I started feeling were offset by how long and difficult yesterday was. Iāve spent today getting back to where I was Thursday night/yesterday morning.
The only major set back right now is that the rehab center my Dad is in has had an outbreak of flu. Precautions are being taken, but what an awful thing. Weāre lucky that they didnāt have this yesterday, otherwise they would have probably been on flu ban too. As much as it is a concern with my Dad recovering from RSV, there would have been nowhere to take my Dad if they were under flu ban and not taking new residents!
Ritter has been amazing and deserves much praise for being a good boy! I love him and his kind heart very much! š
Oh my gosh Deb I havenāt had much of a chance to check in on everyone here and I canāt believe youāve been having so many issues. Iām so sorry to hear that everyone has been so ill. I hope that your sisters have managed to make it home to help as it is horrible when you are dealing with everything yourself.
God bless, I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. ā¤ļø
šš»š Thank you @gerinurse ! It has been awful! The respiratory stuff going around this year has been nightmarish! Weāre hanging in there, but it has been a comedy of errors. Weāre all finally feeling better except for poor Ritter.
My Mom is finally home and off of oxygen, but she is on strict orders to rest for the next week. My Dad is at a rehab center until my Mom is more recovered/insurance runs out - he is okay but probably should go back to the doctor. Weāre scrambling to get a home health aid in place to help my Mom a few days a week with the really physical care aspects.
One of my sisters moved her trip up so weāll have some help, but Iām multitasking on an entirely new level these days. The upside is that Iām finally feeling like I can be a Mom with a baby attached to me full time and be productive. šŖš»
The downside is that Ritter is now at the Vet with Ken the Hubby for a possible broken tail. ā¹ļø Ken stepped on his tail accidentally a few days ago. Ritter cried but seemed okay (we both checked it that night and the day after). No visible issues since. Fast forward to last night when I accidentally stepped on Ritterās tail, and he screamed bloody murder at me and bit my arm. He then proceeded to hold his tail funny for the rest of the night. I jinxed that poor dog when I said he was the only healthy family member. š

When it rains, it pours - Very Long
My Husband was the first to get sick. He ended up with bronchitis. He is making a recovery, but two weeks later he still has a cough.
My son, Gunner, was the next to get sick. He has an upper respiratory virus just like Dad; however, he has been improving beautifully. He still has a wet cough and sneezes a lot of mucus, but weāve seen his doctor twice and gone to urgent care once - everyone agrees we are doing everything to help him recover and he is doing so well and has a clear chest.
Then my Dad got sick. We had to call for an ambulance for him Sunday night. He has bronchitis and tested positive for RSV. He received discharge papers on Valentines Day - wait for the catch below.
My Mom and I start having symptoms Saturday.
My Mom was diagnosed with bronchitis and potentially the tip of pneumonia at Urgent Care on Tuesday (something about one of her lungs looking tight on X-ray). She came home with prescriptions and rested.
Wait for it! Everything starts going to hell in a handbasket on Valentines Day!
I ended up at the Doctorās office on Valentines Day morning. I get diagnosed with Upper Respiratory Virus, and am prescribed an inhaler and pills for a cough. We had Gunner checked by his pediatrician while I was checked out: his pediatrician was very happy with how he was improving.
I manage to get Gunner squeezed in for his helmet check a day early since I knew that I am most miserable in the morning and wonāt be able to get out by myself Thursday. We go home. Husband is on his second day home from work helping nurse both Gunner and I so I can get some rest. We take a family nap - my Mom was staying in bed resting and waiting to hear that my Dad was being discharged from the hospital. We wake up and my Mom is gone - she is gone for a few hours. We all assume the process of getting my Dad out of the hospital is just taking extra time.
Here it comes! The beginning of chaos! 7PM I get a call from an ER doctor asking if I knew my Mom had been admitted with pneumonia, suspected congestive heart failure, and is on a ventilator: she apparently made it to my Dadās room, couldnāt catch her breath, and was wheeled down to the ER by nurses after her oxygen level was tested. So Iām too sick to do anything for my Mom other than make phone calls and my Dad is stuck in the hospital with discharge papers and nowhere to go (his health needs exceed my capabilities to the point that the fact I am super sick doesnāt even matter). We get ball rolling on social worker consulting and helping find temporary care in a convalescent home for my Dad. My Mother-in-law offers to come down and help; I accept that offer while panicking over the lack of planning for anyone to care for my Dad when my Mom canāt.
Thursday comes. Husband is supposed to return to work, but Iām am even worse than I was before getting prescriptions so he doesnāt want to leave us alone. He stays home, we plan on having Mother-in-law come with us so Husband and I can run into hospital to check on my Parents. I am wheezing, having extreme difficult clearing my throat of congestion, and tell Husband after we deal with my parents I will need to go to Urgent Care. I donāt make it that long. Social worker calls and has to talk to my Husband as Iām so congested and raw from coughing to clear my throat that I canāt eek out much sound. Plans to deal with hospital are put on hold. I am rushed to Urgent Care (run by my insurance which I love).
My lungs still appear to be clear, and I donāt have strep, but Doctor (Dr. Fabulous and Amazing) takes my symptoms seriously and beefs up my prescriptions. I am now on six medicines: inhaler, cough pill, antibiotic, prednisone, Flonase so I can safely get some congestion relief, and Tamiflu (she knew that it was probably a bit late for best result, but given my symptoms and misery said it might just help a little). Iām sent on my merry way and told if I donāt get better that I should come back on Tuesday, ask for her by name, and sheāll have a Cat Scan (sorry if this is the wrong test - Iām really not functioning well right now) with dye ordered to make sure they arenāt missing anything with my lungs. I leave with a hungry husband and a missed call from a hardworking social worker.
Weāre not done yet people! It just keeps getting better. We stop to order food for Husband before heading home: the clamp on my radiator that has popped off a few times decides that even though it was just replaced it will pop off again! We canāt make it home and have to call for a AAA tow. Thankfully my Mother-in-law, who has just driven 6+ hours to provide baby relief so I can rest, is able to pick Gunner and me up. Just before we call for a tow, we find out that the convalescent homes my Mom wanted arenāt available (no beds in one; second doesnāt take my Dadās insurance).
We finally manage to get home. My added medicines seem to be making a teensy tiny bit of a difference already (my congestion is looser, which feels fantastic). We open up the search for hospital-preferred convalescent homes that will take my parentsā secondary insurance (couple reasons why Medicare wouldnāt cover - too short of a hospital stay and my mom has already refused recommended physical therapy for my Dad - to build up leg muscle - my Dad refused to cooperate last time he needed physical therapy after hip replacement), but my Dad is still stuck at the hospital. My SUV is now sitting at my repair shop waiting for repair. Iām not well enough to do more than make phone calls and have healthy people repeat what I have to say.
My sisters both live overseas so they are scrambling to arrange flights to come help. Even after both parents are home, some major changes need to be made. I also had to cancel Ritterās neuter surgery on Monday (I donāt need to add to this train wreck, and Iām not pressing my luck given all the bad things happening lately). I still donāt know if Iāll be well enough to even pop in to see my parents at the hospital tomorrow. My Mom is nowhere near ready to be released. Thank goodness I have my Mother-in-law saving the day and taking care of Gunner when he isnāt breastfeeding!
On a happier note, Husband and I are going to join a gym together and workout in the mornings when my Mom is healthy and can watch Gunner (I assume Iāll be healthy by then too). I also have my jogging stroller from storage so I can resume the 4-mike lap with Ritter (and now Gunner) once Iām better.
This chaos is my life right now. If you take anything away from this too long post, please let it be that this cold and flu season is so bad and so dangerous.
š·
Ritter is officially the only healthy member of the household. Hubby is still getting over bronchitis, Gunner is still sick and miserable, my elderly father got sick next and will be evaluated for bronchitis and pneumonia tomorrow, and my Mom and I woke up sick this morning (I knew I was getting sick yesterday thanks to a sore throat followed by some congestion and throat tickling).
I feel like shit and need to cough a lot, but Gunner is miserable so he only wants to be held by me. Last time I allowed myself to cough while he slept, he woke up crying so that sucked.
We took Gunner to Urgent Care this morning upon guidance from our insuranceās nurses hotline. The recommendation was based on our answers to a series of questions. I personally would have preferred to not take him to a place full of sick people, but we stayed away from everyone else as best we could. The Doctor was really pleased with everything we are doing and only suggested giving a little pedialyte preventatively since Gunnerās appetite is reduced (he is well hydrated and maintaining his weight since his 6 month appointment 5 days ago). The whole reason I had called was to see what else I could do for Gunner besides Tylenol, Baby Vickās Rub, running a Humidifier round the clock, steam sessions in the bathroom, frequently offering the breast, putting his bed on an incline, counting wet diapers to ensure he is hydrated, watching his symptoms, cuddling my baby, and taking his temperature periodically.
Iām not looking forward to disinfecting all of Gunnerās toys when he gets better, but weāll manage. Iām also fairly surprised that I lasted as long as I did before getting sick since I constantly have Gunner coughing and sneezing in my face, and rubbing his face and hands all over me. I hope I make a quick recovery since I need to care for Gunner round the clock.
I forgot to mention that Gunner had his first experience with vomit today. Poor kid has definitely inherited my sensitivity to post nasal drip. He coughed so hard he threw up.
I really wish Gunner wasnāt sick, but I feel really lucky that it isnāt the flu or RSV. Plus he seems to be doing better today.
Sickness in the house is keeping me busy, but Iām planning on asking my Hubby to get the jog stroller out of storage this weekend. It looks like Iām going to have to pick exercise that fits my life, not my preferences. Weāll see what happens. I guess Ritter, Gunner, and I will be tackling the nearby 4-mile loop for exercise and nap time.
Gunner is doing better, and I havenāt gotten sick yet. Funny how only the males in the house are affected. š¤
Ritter is the best boy! He has been so wonderful with baby Gunner and very understanding as Iāve struggled to get us all back on track with exercise and training after giving birth. Iām currently working on ideas to increase his enrichment in the house (dang dog takes all his toys outside and hates Kongs). Weāve been struggling a bit with Ritterās behavior with my husband - despite being my dog, Ritter is obsessed with my husband. He literally gives him no space, jumps all over him, clings to him, paws him for pets, and generally drives my husband insane with his clinginess. My husband canāt stand the fact that he canāt get even a little space from Ritter. If anyone has any suggestions or experience with this type of behavior, Iād love to hear it.
We had issues with Charlie seeking attention. The behaviourist told us that we had to be firm and make him lie down and stay. Once he had stayed for a period of time we could go over and give him spontaneous affection. She said he had to learn that affection would be provided without him searching it out. She also had my husband so Charlie loved to wrestle with spend time every single night wrestling and playing tug games. He got designated time for fun and play and when it was over he got a treat. We also had to really increase his walks and exercise. I donāt know how much you are walking Ritter right now with Life so busy but It worked really well.
The behaviourist said that many dogs are similar to people in that regard. They will seek attention negatively if they arenāt getting enough spontaneous positive attention. Some dogs do things like chew shoes, eat things they shouldnāt and Generally get in to trouble while others just seek attention.
If Ritter likes the sound of crunching water bottles then put some on some old socks and let him crunch away. If he takes them outside no worries and there are always plent more in the house. We also used real bones that I boiled and then dried so Charlie could chew on them. Once he got the marrow out I would put some peanut butter in the centers. Many butchers will sell you leg or hip bones. We also used feeder toys allot. They make jugs that you can put kibble in they have pull ropes inside. The dog pulls the rope and manipulated a piece of food out or there are cubes and balls that they can roll around to get a piece of kibble to spill out. We initially used them to stop Charlie from eating too fast. Once his eating behaviours stopped we used them as toys because he was highly food motivated in his play. In the summer take a big plastic tub and make some chicken or beef flavoured water. Partially freeze it and then shove some medium size rubber bones in it. Let it freeze fully and then let him lick and chew on the toys. Great for hydration on hot days and stops him from taking all of his new toys outside.
I hope that some of this helps. š
Thanks for all the ideas and information @gerinurse ! Iāll definitely keep working with Ritter and try out some of the things youāve mentioned. Iām also looking into doing an evaluation with a trainer who does a lot of advanced obedience work as well as protection training. I need to up Ritterās exercise, find him a job to do, and work on finding some more enrichment activities to keep him busy and happy. I just hope I can help my Husband enjoy having Ritter, or any dog, around.
