“As good as it can be being back in this place,” he replied as he looked around. Head shaking as he tried to understand what had happened to have him end back to that hell hole. “Who else is back?”
Freddie simply nodded. So far, it was looking like no one was happy about this turn of events, and he could hardly blame them. “Millie,” he answered, going through the mental list of all the paths he’d crossed so far. “Camille, Hannah. Us. That’s everyone that I know of.”

“You’re gentle.” As if that was a point that correlated with his own statement she took a step closer, uninvited she was leering dangerously close to being in his personal space. Her arms extended, hands grasping his shoulders with such focus that it seemed like she was afraid she would break him into a million pieces with the mutant strength she had had no trouble controlling in another lifetime where things had been fixed, “Have you ever loved something so much that you would do anything to protect it? So much that you’d let the entire world burn to make sure this one thing is perfect.”
Her reaction wasn’t exactly what he was counting on, his eyebrows pulling together when she grabbed him, asking one simple and slightly disturbing question. Ruby. Nathan. Trevor. Gina. He would do anything for their happiness, wouldn’t he? He would do anything to keep them safe. Even if it was selfish. Even if it was wrong. He thought about his best friend and the different outcome that he could have had, the way his future could have gone, and all of his hesitation fell away. “Yes,” he admitted. “But I don’t think we get that option.”

Millie looked to her left, slightly surprised to see who it was. “Freddie,” she smiled, pausing on her way to wherever it was her feet were taking her next. “I’m I’m not sure. I’m still trying to figure that out.” Her immediate reaction was to think of Olivia and shake her head, but from the look on Freddie’s face, perhaps he needed a more optimistic response. “How are you holding up?”
“That’s understandable,” Freddie nodded. It was hard to imagine any of them were great since the shake up. “I’m okay.” His smile was a little lacking, but it wasn’t a lie. There were too many things to consider, one specific concern on his mind. Trevor. Where was he? Would he be lost all over again? Would it be Nathan or Gina this time? Or someone else? It hurt his head. As much as he loved being alive, he wished he could make a deal to give his life up so no one else had to. It just didn’t work like that. “Just quite... confused.”

Hannah nodded in agreement. “I hope you’re right. I’d like not to lose some important things in my life this time round. I’m sure you and the other Whittemore alums would like not to lose some things, too.” She certainly hoped that Jonah wouldn’t lose his sanity this time. Shaking her head, she let those thoughts fade so she could focus her attention to the present, even if it felt like the past. “Good.” She grinned. “How does a picnic sound?” she asked. Some things didn’t have to change. The picnic they’d shared at the first reunion had brought them to this comfort she felt, after all. Perhaps it could bring her more now.
“Fixing things are what second chances are all about, right?” The logical side of his mind told him that it wasn’t that easy, that even attempting to fix things could result in a much worse outcome, but he preferred to ignore that part. “A picnic sounds great,” he replied enthusiastically, the memory of their first picnic that didn’t actually happen clearing up as the seconds passed. While he knew that distracting himself from being back would only work for so long, denial seemed to be Freddie’s defense mechanism. He seemed to think that if he didn’t accept it, then it wasn’t reality. “We can head to one of the houses to throw it together. I think I’m in Dudley, but I’m sure no one would mind either way.” There were more serious things to be worrying about than who was taking the food from the refrigerators.

“Any idea why we’d be back here, reliving this… nightmare?” she asked him. She couldn’t seem to figure out how to have a conversation, still fumbling about with the concept of a second chance. Was she supposed to converse as though she hadn’t met anyone but Jonah, as though she didn’t already know them? Or could she jump back into the familiarity of the relationships she had built the first time around? How was one supposed to handle time travel? “This might seem like an odd question maybe, but do you have plans? Anyone to meet up with or anything? I think Jonah is busy, and it’d be nice to spend more time with a familiar unfamiliar face.”
“Not a clue, unfortunately.” He had been trying to figure that one out himself. “Maybe... maybe it’s fate’s way of making sure things don’t end so bad this time.” It had ended bad, the details were fuzzy but they were coming back and he knew that very few good things had been a result of the school’s reconstruction. “We can hope.” He always had hope. Throughout everything, Freddie had never let all of his hope slip away. It had faltered at times, sure. But he held onto his positive outlook with everything that he had. If not for that, he wasn’t sure how he would have gotten through the tough times -- even though he had yet to live some of them. “It’s not odd at all,” he reassured her, smiling once again. “And I do not have any plans or anyone to meet up with.” In fact, he wasn’t sure that anymore of his closest friends were around. At least he had Hannah. Even if he had technically only known her all of ten minutes. “This familiar unfamiliar face is all yours.”

“Freddie.” Relief flooded her voice. A smile lit her face as her confusion died down even more, the tension in her mind easing greatly. She knew him; she was sure of it. There was no other way she would feel such comfort and security with an absolute stranger. This reunion had happened once before, and she could remember her time with the boy beside her that much more clearly. “I haven’t seen you in years, but at the same time… I know that this is the first time I’ve met you in this lifetime. Bizarre, isn’t it?” Hannah turned to face him fully, the smile glowing as she let herself remember another life. “I’m so glad to see you.”
So it wasn’t just him. He wasn’t crazy. “Hey,” he replied, unable to stop the smile that spread across his face. He trusted her. He knew that. And he missed her. It didn’t make sense, to miss someone that he didn’t know, but very little of what went on at Whittemore had ever made much sense. He was filled with relief, seeing her there, knowing that she was okay, this stranger that was somehow one of the most important people in his life. It was almost hard to think about, not in an emotional way but in an actual mental and physical way, but flashes were coming back. A picnic. A dance competition. “Bizarre,” he agreed, and he didn't know how but he knew that he meant it as he said, “I’m glad to see you too.”
Gina wasn’t there. Nathan wasn’t there. Trevor wasn’t there. Freddie felt rather nostalgic standing in front of the rebuilt school, and maybe a little alone, but it was fine. He was fine. Just confused. Really, he was glad that his friends were nowhere to be seen. He would rather them stay away, stay safe. It was only a very small selfish part of him that couldn’t help but wish they were there to help him figure things out. Life was always easier when they were around. His ears picking up on approaching footsteps, he cleared his throat, trying to pull out a convincing smile, one that wasn’t full of loss and bewilderment. “How’s it going?”
Frankly quite unaware of how unnerving this entire situation may or may not have been, Camille had many questions that were aimed at nobody in particular as she threw her duffel bag to one side. On an alternate timeline right now she was chained up in her Father’s lovely test centre but on this one she had arrived before the spilling of blood and guts – something that she was surprisingly pleased about. After all, she had always just wanted to be involved. Eyes alarmingly wide and splintered green as she stepped towards the first target she saw, “I finally got here in time for the action.”
Freddie was struggling to figure out what had happened and what hadn’t, the lines to reality and fiction blurred all over again. He knew things he shouldn’t know, that hadn’t happened, that never did, and he liked to believe it was his imagination getting away from him but he knew that it was more than that. He felt like he was dreaming but he couldn’t wake up. He already had. “Right,” he chuckled halfheartedly. “Let’s hope there’s none of that.” But this was Whittemore, and there was always action, unwanted or not. Even the most optimistic person couldn’t deny that. “A peaceful reunion would be nice.”
Hannah looked around her, perplexed at the thought of being back here at Whittemore. Hadn’t it been years since this dreadful reunion she’d fought her way into attending with Jonah? Hadn’t she just been in the middle of writing up forms in the office, counting the seconds to when she could go home to do something she actually enjoyed? Then again, it all seemed like a distant memory, like a dream even. Something in her gut told her she hadn’t spoken to or seen Jonah, Freddie, Millie, or anyone from Whittemore in ages, but she could also distinctly remember having a conversation with Jonah just yesterday about taking a trip to Southeast Asia for new artifacts for the shop. “Is it just me, or does this seem a little like deja vu to you?” she asked, turning her head to the person coming up on her right.
It was horrifying in a way, to be back. It felt like it wasn’t the first time and worse, like it wasn’t the last. Freddie couldn’t figure out what the blur in his mind was, the walls he couldn’t quite get around. Half of him felt like he should be caring for zoo animals, half of him felt like he should be looking out for his friends. All of him felt like he should be running as far away from this place as possible. He was walking with his hands in his pockets, trying to assure himself that he’d just had a strange dream that was messing with his head when he heard an unfamiliar voice. No, familiar. No... yes. “Slightly,” he admitted, looking up to see a familiar unfamiliar person standing in front of him. “I know you?” The comment came out like a question, he needed her to confirm it. “I don’t know you. Hannah?”

Danny had heard the news, everyone had. It was hard not to when it was one of the most discussed topics around Whittemore. The reporter was sitting outside,a bottle of something that seemed to be Tequila but it tasted not quite like Tequila. Taking the bottle, the blonde man took long swigs of it’s contents leaving little of the liquid inside. He was angry. Angry at Texas for bringing him into this mess. Angry at those that had killed Daisy. Most importantly he had been angry at himself. If he had gone to that wedding there was a chance that he could have save her. If he had showed up, perhaps she could still be alive. Sure, he might be the one that was one, but he didn’t really cared about that. She deserved more. He knew that. All that time he was sure that he would be the one to hurt her. The one to cause her more pain. Daniel Vertuoso didn’t actually consider the fact that she would be the one hurting him.
Freddie didn’t know much about Danny, he didn’t know how he felt about Daisy but he had married her in another life, there must have been some kind of connection between them. Regardless, he stood and watched him drink and it was clear that he was hurting, or angry, probably both. He had known what it was like to lose someone only once until this year, finding out that Trevor was gone, it would have been worse for him if denial hadn’t been his initial reaction. It didn’t matter that Danny probably couldn’t be considered his friend, he worried, he cared too much for everyone and he couldn’t leave him alone not knowing what he might do, intentionally or not. “Hey,” he spoke softly, gesturing to the ground, the open place beside of him. “Mind if I sit? I won’t bother you, I just need--” a slight pause, he thought of a random excuse, a lie that rolled off his tongue with anything but ease, “--to rest for a minute.”
Brown eyes shifted from the photo to the boy beside her, watching him as he replied with unbelievable fondness in his voice. Perhaps it was the elevated hormone levels, or maybe just the state of their lives at the moment, but hearing him speak so fondly of the girl made her tear up slightly. Blinking the feeling away, she smiled, nodding. “It’s a bit difficult to imagine you two separately. You’re practically a packaged deal at this point,” she teased, glancing back down at the phone and flipping to the next photo. It was nice to see two people whose relationship hadn’t been frayed, two people that had remained honest and kind to each other despite having every opportunity to lash out. She wished in that moment that she could be more like them, but just as quickly as the thought entered her mind, she forced it away. “How are those bears doing?” Millie had never given him a complete explanation behind the out of the blue gift, and yet just like usual, he was kind enough not to ask too many questions. Right hand coming to rest on her stomach, she found herself extremely grateful for that quality.
It was funny that she would say so, Freddie honestly could not imagine himself without Gina either. They had been through so much together, she lingered in all of his best and worst memories. The idea that he could have easily lost her once was something he didn’t like to think about, the important part was that he didn’t, that she had did everything in her power to move forward with her life. He had never been prouder of anyone and he was practically beaming as he spoke, joking, “I think she’s realized she’s pretty much stuck with me at this point.” His expression remained as she asked about the bears, he still had no idea how she had heard about two bears in need of a home but he wasn’t an extremely curious person and his parents had been happy to take them in with no questions asked, it was the perfect arrangement. “They’re doing great. I force my parents to update me on the animals as often as they can, my dad has a soft spot for them.” It had been updates on a daily basis at first, now it was more a few times a week but as long as he knew that his extended family was doing well, and he did consider the zoo animals his extended family, that was okay. Keeping the conversation light, he moved to a topic that he hoped was easy, not knowing much of what happened outside of Whittemore’s walls -- though to be fair he didn’t know much of what happened inside of them either. “Hey, how is your family doing?”
Zach had been away for quite some time to do some work and escape the chaos of Whittemore, losing most contact with the group outside of Faye for said time. He wasn’t completely trying to distance himself from them, he knew he’d be stuck with them no matter what, but he needed some time for himself. These past few months had been rough and he had barely gotten anytime to heal himself the best he could, so he was now in a somewhat better place and ready to return to Whittemore, completely oblivious to all the new chaos that had just happened. “Did I miss anything important while I was away?” He simply asked the person closest to him, looking around.
They were surrounded by so much death, so many bad memories that would override the good forever now, Freddie stopped walking when he heard Zach, the realization that he might not have found out about Daisy hitting him. He didn’t know how close they were, especially after the stunts that had been pulled, still someone else had died and it stung. Not to mention the new information about Hazel. “Uh, yeah. Kind of, I guess.” He lifted his hand, fingers running through his hair, a nervous habit. “Have you not talked to anyone?”
Standing against a desk in the library with a bound book she began to twist a ribbon from around it, her body close to one of the shelves that now had several others pushed to the side and into a pile, “Everybody said it was too quiet,” she mused, gentle and strange words as she flipped open the book, “I’m beginning to feel like there’s ntever going to be a final chapter.”
“It has been a little eerie,” Freddie admitted, turning from the shelf he stood by as she continued. The thought that they wouldn’t get an ending at all was just as terrifying as getting a bad ending, maybe worse. His eyes focused on the book she held, suddenly concerned that Faye knew details of a near future that he didn’t. “Is something else going on?”
“So do you think this is it?” Kayla asked, brushing a hand through her hair. “Things could be calm now, right. I mean, that feels like it could be something that could happen.”
“It’s not impossible. We got out before.” They had also gotten pulled back in, but Freddie couldn’t shake the hope he held onto. “We can hope. Maybe we’re... making progress. Anything can happen at Whittemore, can’t it?”
