I definitely think Grace had secretly been a regressor for a long time (like it started because of the stress of college type long time) and he always (very badly) kept it a secret but as soon as he told Rocky his age, which is basically a baby by Eridian standards, Rocky immediately assumed a very caregiver-ish role by instinct and Grace never fully corrected him because in some (what he thinks to be selfish) way, he wanted the care without the shame. And since Rocky doesn't have any baseline of how humans should act, he has no idea that Grace as a fully grown man "shouldn't" act like that.
So Rocky takes on the role of a 'trusted adult' while Grace half-regresses all the time. And he only ends up telling Rocky the full truth about age regression after he fully drops into headspace one day.
Here's a middle regressed Grace aboard the Hail Mary who is self-conscious about his strong emotions, and especially the fact that he cries so often. He knows he can't hide from Rocky, but in this state (even if he leans young,) they got an understanding that "hiding" means he needs some time alone.
He's tucked into a corner, knees pulled up to his chin. And he is trying SO hard not to cry again. His body rigid, breath held, eyes screwed shut. The effort it takes not to make a sound and to keep back the tears is giving him a headache. Entire body trembling from the effort just to keep from crying.
Rocky's not going to ignore that.
He'll approach wordlessly and simply sits with his Grace. Trying to get him to talk is s fruitless endeavour. So he sits, nudging the xenonite ball against Grace to connect. And before he knows it, Grace's posture relaxes and he launches himself against the ball, hugging the structure with the same force he was just holding himself. There he can finally let some tears spill.
- human rattle. 8/10. good shaking noise. lots of fun when grace hides somewhere on the hail mary and shakes it for rocky to find. dont tell grace that rocky knows where he is the whole time.
- grace singing. 11/10. rocky has heard lots of human music. grace is very very imperfect but is also rocky's person. sometimes grace tries eridian music, which is mostly just funny.
- human plush toy. 7/10. rocky doesnt really Get It but it's clearly important to grace.
- grace reading out loud. 10/10. rocky likes human science textbooks a lot but has really come around on kid-oriented mystery books. nancy drew is his favorite
- call and response tapping. 9/10. very important game for pebble development. grace is about as advanced as a pebble so they're even.
- dress up. 7/10. most human clothes don't make enough noise. but grace finds it funny to draw things on rocky's ball or make him a paper hat. grace laughing = good good good sound.
classification au with caregiver!strat and little!grace where he's actually fine on his own and very used to regressing alone but she's actually struggling with deprivation symptoms cause she's got nobody to look after and either she asks him or he offers to drop w/ her?

Littles have deprivation illness when they can't be tiny BUT that also goes for those who are classified as Bigs!!
Stratt always brushed it off, she never considered herself caregiver material. She was too brash, too cold, not the type of caregiver one saw at a playground kissing boo-boos or cooed. So, Stratt just, sealed that part of herself off.
Of course that lead to migraines and other inconvenient symptoms, feeling her heart aching whenever she did see a Little. Something she tried her best to avoid.
But now shes here, her lead in astrophage is a Little and they're professionally together a lot!
Grace notices, of course he does. Grace also knows Stratt will never admit what she biologically needs so, Grace decides to initiate.
Maybe it's after a meeting and they have some downtime so Grace goes to Stratt and is like, "Stratt can I drop in your office? My room is too far away," he says, slightly playing it up as he scuffs his shoe against the ground.
Stratt glances up from her tablet, fingers hovering over the screen.
"Only if you don't intend to drool over my desk," she says, her voice even, very much Stratt-like as she goes back to her tablet.
But, Grace can see the tension in her shoulders lessen slightly when he plunked beside her with his stuffie ā” (And Stratt refuses to admit that perhaps she herself is feeling a bit more relaxed with tiny Grace beside herā)
thinking about caregiver carl and his little ducklings eva and grace. :( heās sneaking them off base for late night sweet treats and is doing silly voices for bedtime stories. movie nights where he has grace sleeping in his arms and eva half on top of him as she desperately tries to stay awake through the entire film.
Grace waking up for the first time on the Hail Mary in his smallest headspace, calling out for Mama and wondering why she isn't coming to get him...
Armando having to help calm him down whilst Mary plays recordings Stratt made last minute to attempt to soothe him if he ever regresses on the mission.
Grace wondering why he can hear his Mamas lullabies but cannot see her..

šHow Stratt handles a tantrum
Stratt doesnāt usually let it get to that point if sheās around, sheās scarily good at identifying when heās at his limit and either removing the stressor or moving him away from the stressor.
But if he does end up having a tantrum, she stays remarkably calm. She doesnāt yell but she doesnāt use a baby voice either, instead sheāll wait out the tantrum making sure he stays hydrated and safe.
After he calms down, sheāll talk him through it and usually he ends up going for a much needed nap.
š«How Rocky/Adrian handles a tantrum
Eridians are very instinct driven, when Grace begins melting down Rocky prioritizes physical comfort first. (Holding him, swaddling him, rumbling/purring) with LOTS of reassurance.
Adrian usually resorts to negotiations with Grace, starting with talking Grace through his emotions. Theyāll offer Grace small choices to help him regain his control. They are in general very nurturing towards Grace.
Your art is so adorable!! I read your pinned post and am aware that live action shows have less of a chance of being drawn but I figured Iād give it a shot, of course feel absolutely free to decline!! honestly even if I fully banned live action stuff Iād still draw grace because that movie is so so good... I also love how every age regressor immediately clocked grace. they sent a baby to space.

a lot of play for eridians is sound-based. making music with external instruments and singing. that sort
so i think baby grace happily drumming his hands on rocky's ball is very pebble-coded. rocky taps from the inside to harmonize and praises him for repeating rhythms ["amaze amaze amaze! grace very good at tapping!"] bc due to eridian language being so musical, teaching hatchlings to imitate complex rhythms is veryyy important
grace's most favorite game ever is imitate, of course. making rocky do silly stuff bc he does silly stuff is sooo much fun. sometimes hes too baby to lead tho so rocky gets to. always tells grace good job, grace is best eridian etc.
and imitating eridian language of course. grace is. Not good at it
Another Agere post, this time its project hail mary because they reeled me in. Iām going to go insane over PHM. Fair warning there will be some angst in here but itās worth it i promise.
Go! Ryland headcanons! Make that man a baby!
š . Grace has always been a fussy one when he slips. It was first noticed on the Vatt, after a meeting full of yelling people. Grace had stayed behind as everyone left.. except Carl. Carl had come in to check and spotted Grace in a corner, curled up and teary eyed.
š . Oh, he is so big on naps. Sometimes when he slips, heāll curl up wherever he can and conk out with his fox cardigan. He usually wakes up in his quarters because either Carl, Stratt, or another person carried him to bed.
š . He struggles to hide his regression due to always needing to chew on something. Heās tiny, his jaw needs to be busy! Itās usually his sleeve or his hand, but when heās alone, he has a selection of tethers.
š . His normal age range is from 3 to 5. He tries so hard to take care of himself when heās older, but he still needs a lot of help. His main caregiver is Carl, but sometimes Stratt is willing to babysit. Sheās not happy about it, but she can watch him for a while.
š . The first time he slipped into babyspace was on the Hail Mary. Heād been searching frantically for anyone else as he started to feel the drop. He was just so scared and alone. He ended up crumpling in a corridor. He cried and cried until he fell asleep. Thankfully Armando got him to bed, but it wasnāt pleasant for Grace.
š . When Grace slipped around Rocky for the first time, he started sobbing. Heād been alone for so long and someone was finally here. He cried until he almost got sick, but Rocky managed to comfort him. How? We dunno. But he was just happy someone was there with him now.
š . Grace is very clingy towards Rocky when heās tiny. He toddles behind the Xenonite ball with his favorite plushie in his arm, always wondering what the eridianās up to. He often falls asleep by Rockyās xenonite tunnels, waiting for the Eridian to not be busy. And turns out.. he actually sleeps better when someone is keeping an eye on him.
š . Heās very fond of parallel play. He loves to build with his little magnetic blocks while Rocky makes things with Xenonite. Sometimes heāll play with those little velcro fruits and pretend to make Rocky food, just to giggle when the eridian pretends to eat it. Itās his favorite thing when Rocky plays along with him!
š . When they finally get to Erid, Graceās preferred mode of travel when tiny is riding on Adrianās carapace. Heās still not used to the gravity there, so itās easier to just hitch a ride on his new caregiver. After all, Adrian is fine with it.

š . Carl convinced Stratt to pack Graceās favorite stuff on the ship. His favorite toys, his pajamas, even his little pacifier. But Carl made sure Graceās favorite fox was with him before the ship left.
šŖ . Rocky really struggled with the concept of regression at first. Heād seen Grace behave so many ways, but he just couldnāt figure out why he was so.. leaky. After Grace explained it to him, he began doing research on the shipās computer, and finally understood it better. He now heavily babies Grace when heās little.
āļø . Adrian wasnāt sure about Grace at first, but the first time Grace slipped around them, they almost melted. He was so tiny and helpless.. Adrian couldnāt help it. Theyād scooped him up and made a little blanket nest before putting Grace in it and sitting next to him. They didnāt mind when Grace tried to chew on them, they just thought Grace was a curious pebble. It was so endearing to the large eridian..
