Which mistake has been the most useful, and how will it change your work in the future? A good end to what started off as something incredibly strenuous. This week’s mistake wasn’t very big as everything seems to be falling into place. I would say the most useful mistake would be trying to time manage where everyone can be for the remainder of the week – as ever the group hasn’t been very communicative and thus has not notified me another day where we can all get together to actually, complete and finalise all of our work in one area. I am trying to get through to a definitive answer as I am writing this but we will have to see how that follows through. Overall, this week has proven more productive! The group has come together in the back-alleys of the labs to get some very good progress going. We now have more area to explore in the world and items being plopped in where they are applicable. Again the group hasn’t notified a day where I can actually sit down and take note of everything that has occurred but from what I have been shown/told I can see vast amounts of improvement from everyone. (Even through it is that last week before we hand in this Friday.)
How has your work this week helped you develop the skills you are working towards and future employment? This week’s work has shown me that I do have the patience to get through time and managing others to at least some degree. I feel that the overall amount that I have had to do to organise 3 others has improved my judgement of a person’s productivity and global input into a group setting. I feel that the input of the other team members has picked up and they are really getting back into the swing of things along with fixing bugs and adding finishing touches to things they feel need it – I feel that week’s work, along with the others, has and will greatly improve my communicative skills, management skills and patience in a work setting and prove to enhance my personal progress as a freelance artist and an artist in a work environment.
Has a taught session affected you or your work significantly and how? I wouldn’t say that Sharon has helped me the most in bringing together a fantastic set of ideas for my Research Report Proposal. We discussed some great ideas that I will go into more detail on in my actual research report but basically using my knowledge and the research that I will undergo – I will create a test/game based on the interpretations of people to characters, using shape colour and atmosphere. I’m really looking forward to getting some great informative answers and to see how people around the University will react to differences in character design. I feel that this whole research report will bring me great knowledge and a fantastic amount of feedback to aid me in creating characters that have the right amount of depth, and that will really reminisce with the audience they are for. Using a lot of participating subjects I’m looking forward to seeing what people really associate with shapes colours and tone, and to see how that challenges the stereotypical and connotation views you see in the media and design in characters that you see today.
See you at hand in... (After my evaluation of course)
Cross-Course Collaboration
I thoroughly enjoyed our cross course collaboration - I will state now that I had 2 doctors appointments in the week we were working however I was still informed as to what happened in those two days I was not available. Firstly our group consisted of 9 of us working from VFX, Games and Fine art. As we started up finding out who we were and what we wanted to do we figured out a nice coherent plan of what we wanted to make our PSA about. We chose to do our film around the humorous irony of young people not wanting to go outside so our title was based around ‘The danger of the outdoors’. My input: As an artist – I was elected to draw up some very simple storyboards. As I have some experience in media studies (College and Highschool level) I took it with great pride to get them to be as clear and concise as I could while still maintaining the fun atmosphere we wanted.

The non-background version of Robin for the title screen | With ideas for the layout when given to our other artist to finish up
I had to get this character done today and got a little help from a friend to make him a little less shiny - I tried out a few different ways of getting everything right but as I have said before this isn’t really where I shine best - but I was told that I had to do it in my group as the characters wouldn’t fit the references that I provided if someone else had done them... I mean, I understand that but I still haven’t finished other art pieces that I need to do that should have taken priority over this. Either way - I did get this done and sent over to our indie-dev.
I tried to do another version of the character painting in Photoshop to get it cleaner and more stylized for it to fit - BUT I couldn't get it to work, I don’t understand where things are supposed to go nor how I am supposed to re upload it - I have followed 3 tutorials and they all say different things that I can figure out. I will use Substance painter for the NPC character like i did for the first , this Photoshop way is way more confusing than expected. The UV maps that I have been given are auto UVs and don’t seem to be very coherent to the cause - There are very strange seams and parts don’t seem to fit in places and some do in others - I’m a little confused to whoever unwrapped these. However I’m still trying my best to get these done.
Just a few YCH commissions I got finished the other day when I had the time - I love doing these ones but I’ve done like 70 overall so maybe no more...
