“Each day, more information becomes accessible exclusively through digital means. As knowledge becomes less tangible, and the internet becomes an increasingly universal aspect of everyday life, the rift between the way our brains perceive content we view on our screens and the events we experience in person shifts. Has this made us more susceptible to accepting erroneous or fabricated information as fact? How can we enhance our ability to critically analyze the information we see on our screens?
Through this investigation, I attempted to visually simulate the perception of news, ideas, and images seen online. Initially, each object is given a deeply specific, but completely fabricated background, and is placed in a museum showcase, posing a simple exercise in digital critical analysis. The increasing specificity and complexity of the objects presented is a reflection of the increasing complexity of world issues, and the consequent difficulty of differentiating fact from fiction. The title, combined with the realism of the environment, is intended to push the viewer to consider the nature of the object, as well as the image as a whole- is this image real? Is the object in the image really what the title says it is? Did I think that it was? Why? I attempt to push the viewer to utilize their mind as a tool to differentiate and compare associated images and information- a tool which becomes vital with the progression of our society, and its deepening relationship with the internet.”
