the gowdie-thorne family started with the marriage of daniel thorne and janet gowdie, which marked another era of defiance amongst the gowdies. daniel was a daemon and janet a witch, which made the union between them forbidden by the law of the covenant established after the first crusades. clearly, neither cared much about this and they succeeded in keeping this a secret with some willingness from other creatures to look the other way. the marriage took place in 1895 and soon after they welcomed a daughter, elaine ( b. 1896 ), and a son, arthur ( b. 1897 ). 

daniel thorne perished in a car crash in 1905, just after their tenth wedding anniversary, leaving janet on her own with two young children who had not yet reached the age of nine and eight.
