i’ve warmed up significantly towards the concept of small talk ever since i learned that its sole purpose is to make friendly noises.

as long as you smile and nod, people are satisfied. it’s just to show that you are nice and there with good intentions. we’re small in a big world and have to rely on other people to be decent to us. so we do our little human dance to each other to say, “i’m not here to hurt you. here’s something we have in common, like the weather or sports or itchy sweaters, so we both know we’re on the same team. we both agree on a basic fact, like that it is rainy or that being itchy is uncomfortable, and this proves we can get along. i’m being light-hearted and non-threatening right now.”

small talk isn’t to get to know a person. it’s just a greeting to affirm you’re buddies in the universe.

i am motivated by wanting the other person to know i am friendly, so i have gotten pretty decent at small talk when i used to hate it.

the international implications of jason just being able to walk up to the batmobile and steal its tires as robin, but having to wear a wetsuit and crawl 1 inch every five seconds to get past its thermal systems and cameras as red hood. obviously a big reason for this is that the tech has grown advanced over time, and winick has this ridiculous, convoluted explanation in UTH about how jason was able to steal the tires in the first place because the car was in repairs that night (or something similarly technical, i don't remember the exact details).

but me personally, i prefer the interpretation that the bruce of back then was just. vulnerable. in a way he doesn't allow himself to be anymore. the idea that someone could take him off guard, that someone could sneak into his heart and his life like that....maybe it's something that could've only happened to the bruce of back then, pre-jason's death and naive to the possibility that he could lose someone he loves again. his parents' deaths were supposed to be it. sure, it's always a good idea to update your tech, especially if you're batman, but i do wonder if he sort of angrily installed those systems as a way to punish himself for ever letting someone in again, for ever being so open that a little kid could walk right in and steal his tires and make him laugh on the worst day of his life.
