She nodded, glad that he hadn’t flat out rejected her. It had been awhile since she’d made somewhat of an effort to get to know someone. Maybe it was time to try. “ Do you know many other people? I’ve had a hard time, California is a bit off putting,” she admitted, though she was truly busy a lot of the time. “ Decent clubs though..” She went on, just trying to make the conversation somewhat interesting.

He shrugged, kicking a rock across the sidewalk. “Not really.” He agreed, it was a little strange. Even though he’d grown up in California, the non-city part of the state was a lot different. “I’ve met a few artists just from going around to galleries but I keep to myself most of the time.” It was true, Jack really didn’t go out of his way to meet people. He would wake up midday and go to the library or an internet cafe-- there, most people were quiet and busy. Then he would use the computer to find out what was happening that day and go seek something out. A lot of the time he did it on his own. 

“I keep to myself a lot.” He told her. He didn’t go to clubs often, just bars. Sometimes when he got really drunk at the bar he would end up at a club jumping around and getting into fights, but that was a rare kind of night. “You go out a lot?”

“ I’ll take it as a compliment.” Stopping at the final house. she dropped off the two dogs, waited, stowed the money away. Now it was just back to Baggins. The old bint. “ The normal people.” She laughed, because it implied that artists were superior in some way-which he was right. They were. 

“ I do, I do indeed.” She nodded her head, looking around the streets. Normally this is where she’d just go home until she had Tucker, but she felt the pressure to do something else with him standing there. “ There’s this uh, it’s this cafe, a few blocks from here. I like it because I can bring Baggins and sit outside. I could use a tea..” She trailed off, stepping out of the way of a group of men.

The other dogs gone, he did wonder what the plan was now. If this was where their days converged and he would just see her another time. He hovered, a little unsure and about to ask, when she picked up the conversation. Nodding, he put his hands back in his pockets and agreed, “Yeah, yeah. Let’s go there.” He told her, and held out his hand, gesturing her to go first. “Lead the way.”

“ That’s the thing about artistry, it changes as you evolve. Though, you could always argue that it’s a linear line of evolution rather than finding some abstract meaning that connects them all together, though to be fair that could always be an argument. I think it’s always better to see a wide spectrum than to just see one thought process behind it all, but I’m not much of an artist and what I’m saying might be complete shit.” 

At his mention of seeing the work, she nodded her head. “ Yeah. I’d like that, though I don’t know how great of an opinion you’d get. After all, I am just a dog walker.”

“Well you sound like an artist.” He said, glancing over at her. “Besides, sometimes it’s the normal people whose opinions matter most.” He got the feeling she wasn’t ‘normal’ and that made him smirk. But sometimes it was the stay at home moms who told their husbands that spent the money to buy a piece. Sometimes it was the dog walker recommending it to someone else. In that way, everyone mattered, because if an average person couldn’t like his work what was it worth? 

“Well, you can come around any time. You know where I live.”

“ I’ve never heard that name.” She admitted, looking down at the two dogs, she had left, aside from Baggins. “ Admittedly, I’ve not had much time to look at the artists around here.” With Tucker and walking dogs, she just hadn’t had the time to reach out as she’d wanted to. Of course, she knew that part of this exile was done with conscious thought behind it. She just didn’t have a lot of the same desires as she’d once had. 

“ Mm, yeah?” She looked up at him again, “ How many pieces have you completed for it thus far?” She realized she was asking a lot of questions, but she was genuinely interested in what he had to say. What was going on in that mind. Creative people always had some of the most interesting concepts. It made her feel boring in comparison. As though she were lacking.

He shrugged. He didn’t figure a lot of people had heard the name. He figured he could show her some of the local galleries, if they kept hanging around each other. But he didn’t say anything about it. Turning to her when she asked about his collection, he let out a huge sigh. “Too many.” It was just too hard for him to conceptualize it all in a group. “Everything just evolves as I keep going. It starts to stop being cohesive.” 

Chewing on the inside of his lip, he shrugged. “Maybe you could have a look some time. Could use another opinion.” It was difficult when he couldn’t see it from an outsiders perspective.

She listened as he spoke, getting lost in his own thoughts-losing words, slipping into different conversations. It was actually interesting to hear. The only art she did was photography, but it wasn’t nearly as creative in her opinion. It didn’t take much of her hands or mind. Falling back into step with him, a picture of the piece came into her mind, as he described the colors to her. 

She chose not to interrupt his train of thought, so she stayed quiet, pulling back on a leash every now and then. Looking up at him as he stopped, stopped mid thought, she shrugged. “ Yeah, no that makes sense. It sounds like it’ll be a lovely piece, something you’ve clearly put a lot of time into.” Reaching the next landing, she did much of the same-ringing a doorbell, waiting for an owner, another dog down. “ I look forward to seeing it. Truly. So you were inspired by Hans, what other artists speak to you?”

He glanced at her sideways for just a moment as she began to speak, he realized she was understanding. Whenever he began to ramble he always felt a nagging feeling that he didn’t make any sense. A little embarrassment. They approached another house, and he dug his hands into his pockets, rocking back on his heel as they waited for another own. 

Stepping off the landing, he inhaled, “Aside from the classic old people artists, there’s a few newer artists who’s work I admire. I like Kymm Swank. Really cool. A few other local artists I’ve seen in galleries around town.” He wanted to do that too. Soon. “I’m putting together a... collection I guess. It’s just taken me a long time. It’s a whole thing.”

“ Well I’ll have you test out your theory.” Reaching the home of one of the first animals, she unhooked Dax from the belt. “ What inspired your creation. I’m assuming something did if you’ve managed to get it done this early.” Ringing the doorbell, she stepped back from the front door, turning back to him. “ Or is it that your insomnia has gotten the best of you.” She mildly remembered the previous night, not wanting to relive that moment again. When the door opened, she handed the dog over to it’s owner, taking the cash and stowing it away in her pocket.

“Well, it’s different from my usual work.” He started, mulling over her question. “Usually I work with a lot of fine lines and exact details and that’s a lot more time consuming...” He gave a sort of nod to who he could only assume was the wiry dog’s owner, before following Dani onward. “This one... I kind of called back to, uh, like mid-century abstract? I guess... In the sixties a lot of the modern art was really vibrant... Rich colors and broad strokes. Anyways it kind of reminds me of... Like vibrant abstract weather?” He was rambling. He didn’t get asked to describe his work and inspirations that often. He realized they were pretty convoluted in his head. 

“I feel like that doesn’t really make sense. I dunno, the colors were rich... Maroons, royal blues, hot orange. There’s this artist Hans Hofmann, he did a lot of geometric abstracts, which I dig.. Anyway I was kind of thinking about him, and something hanging in a conference room. Imagining what should hang in a conference room.” He realized he was talking a lot. So he promptly stopped. He took a long final drag of his cigarette and flicked it away from him. He rang his fingers through his hair and fixed his attention on the sidewalk in front of him.

“ Very legendary indeed. You’ll have to show me when it’s completed. My curiosity is piqued.” She smirked. Feeling the pull of the dogs again, she reigned back on the leashes that were hooked at her waist. “ It’s a bit of just understanding needs. I suppose I’m just good at reading things, people-animals..” She shrugged offhandedly. “ Don’t tease. I’ll have you strapped in next, see how you fare with them.”

“I’m not teasing, just full of great ideas.” He stepped away from the bundle of dogs for a moment, deciding he did not want to walk any dogs especially a bunch at once. What if one ran off? That’d be fucked up. “We’ll just leave that to you.” He told her, taking a drag. “Yeah, I’ll show you. She’s almost done, I think maybe just a couple more days. I’ve got to the end of the month.”

“ If it pays the bills,” she shrugged, because it really wasn’t that big of a deal. There were some hard asses about compromising themselves, but she didn’t see it that way. It was a means to an end. Survival. Anyway, she was one to talk. Her career goals were more often than not questionable. “ That’s good then, good on you.” She nodded her head, her eyes filtering about to his. 

“ At least you’re getting recognized, yeah? Nothing wrong with it. All the corporate types will see your art and lust for it.” She laughed, the end being a bit of a tease toward him. “ Are you taking the piss? I’m quite good with organizing these animals. See, Baggins does not work well with Moe. So I keep them on separate sides. This one here-” She pointed to a yorkie, “ Things she’s a herd dog and Baggins needs guidance in life, so I have them onto this side.” She shrugged, “ That one is just a mess,” She pointed to Dax, a very old, yet lively mutt with wiry hair, “ It’s all about how you organize it, simple. Just assessing personalities.”

“The legendary conference room artist.” He mumbled, placing a cigarette between his lips. He followed along as she pointed out the dogs and explained their positionings, and was a little impressed that she’d thought it all through. He’d have probably just kept them all in one hand so he could smoke with the other. “That’s all very complicated. I just meant with the rollerskates anyway. The Iditarod Dog Walker.” He laughed at himself. “Now that’s good.”

“ Do I get to call you a corporate sell out?” She teased, sidestepping a woman and her child. Tugging one of the dogs away from the pair, she continued to walk. “ Have you ever done something that big before?” Seemed like a pretty big job, but good on him. It all started with the small discoveries, that led to bigger ones. “ I don’t know that I’d land feet up,” She smirked, gaining hold back on the animals and slowing them down. “ On Fridays I have a couple of bigger ones, Great Dane, Husky, gets a bit tricky.”

“Yes,” He said with a small grin. “A sell out, I am.” It was nice, though, being able to pay his bills. He imagined fifty years in the future, the hotel being torn down for one reason or another and some kid picking his piece of work off the wall before it was demolished with everything else. And maybe that kid would take it home, or sell it at auction. He wondered what it would be worth then, 

“Yeah, size wise, yeah. This is one of the bigger paychecks I’ve gotten for my work though. No complaints here.” He snickered at the idea of her getting pulled along by a Great Dane. “Yeah bet it would take some skill. Practice with the chihuahaus.”

“Mmm no.” He said, turning back to her. He’d been working on a custom piece for a couple of days now, and it was occupying his time at night. During the day he tried to just enjoy being out of the house. After a couple years of going on few day long benders of drinking and drawing, he had to restructure his life. Before, he wouldn’t leave the house for days finishing a project, and it was definitely making him crazy. This way he had everything balanced. “Been working on this project.”

She nodded her head when he said no. In all honesty she didn’t have much of a plan either-walk the dogs, play with Tucker, go home…drink maybe. She hadn’t gotten that far, not yet. Things were never really set. “ What have you been working on?” She said distractedly as the dogs pulled her along, setting their sights on a dog that was a block away. Digging heavy steps into the sidewalk, she pulled back on the leashes. “ Anything good?”

“Ahh,” He began, “A custom piece for this hotel.. Needs something to put on their conference room wall.” It was pretty corporate for him, but he needed the money and they were gonna pay his rent for a few months. Luckily they’d given him wiggle room on creative freedom. “It’s pretty big, like a four by four.” He told her, watching the dogs pull her. “You ever tried rollerskates? You could Idarod it all over the town.”

“ Yeah,” she said with a subtle finality. Tightening hold on the leash, her eyes naturally fell down to the small dog who was now verging on grey. That had all happened after Mojo, the poor dog unable to hold all that grief in. She’d once wondered if it would’ve been easier to surrender her to the shelter, but the thought of leaving the dog was almost unbearable. Also Mojo would’ve rolled over in his grave. No, Baggins had been somewhat of a good thing in her life, even if they had not seen eye to eye previously. “ Nearly two years.” 

He’d been gone for nearly two years now. There had been a point where she’d never thought she would’ve gotten to this point. For a long time all she had wanted to do was die along with him. A world without Mojo was not a world she had wanted to live in, but time passed and things got bearable. Life returned. Things normalized. Breathing became easier. “ No plans today?” She asked trying to return the conversation back to him.

He scanned the small crowd of dogs, picking out the little pug who he recognized from her apartment. “That’s yours, right?” He’d remembered hearing her stutter over who the owner was when she was drunk, and he could have sworn she was going to say fiancee. He’d tried not to be curious about that, though he realized she clearly lived alone. If she had a fiancee, he was pretty invisible. “How long you had her?” He asked, keeping the personal shit to himself. 

He’d never had a dog before, but he’d always liked them. Animals in general. They were cool. He ran his fingers through his hair, pushing it out of his face and turning toward the sky for a moment. He was digging the weather. Good day for a walk. Turning his attention back to her, he felt himself observing her a little and had to resist looking too closely. He couldn’t shake the curiosity, but he had a feeling that was a common effect she had on people. It made him uneasy.
