You lied on top of Luke, your knees bracketing his hips and your head tucked in the crook of his neck. His hands rested warmly and heavily against your back where they had slipped beneath the grey t-shirt of his that you were wearing. You could feel the slight chill of the metal band curled around his left ring finger, and you smiled to yourself as you pressed a kiss to the junction where his neck met his shoulder.
As he released a content hum, you couldn't help but think about how lucky you were to have Luke in your life. You couldn't imagine life without him, even though you weren't even acquaintances a few years previously. Recently, the two of you sat down and had a serious chat about your future together and eventually decided that it was a better time than any to try and start a family.
If at all possible, Luke seemed more excited about it than you were. He had always been the type of guy to give his princess whatever she wanted, and if you wanted a baby, he would do whatever it took to give you one. It basically meant that the two of you were fucking like rabbits in the first week, but with all of the pregnancy tests coming out negative, you decided to slow down and not force it. You had been stressed about not being able to get pregnant, especially after having sex nearly every morning and night, so putting on the brakes gave you a little room to breathe, and you were grateful.

However, after you returned to get your appointment results, you came home in tears.
“Luke?” You called once the door closed behind you.
“Living room.” He called back, and you made your way to where he was sitting on the couch. He looked up when you came into the room and immediately frowned at your tear-streaked face. “Y/N, baby, come here.” He opened his arms, and you climbed into his lap. He wrapped his arms around your middle and kissed you on your wet cheek. “What happened?”
You sniffed and wiped your eyes. “I went back to get the test results, and it turns out that i’m not completely infertile, but my fertility rate is really low.” You said with a shaky voice, and then got hit by a wave of sobs. Having a baby was something that you had always wanted, but knowing that the chance of making that dream a reality was smaller than you had originally thought really broke your heart.
Luke shushed you gently while rubbing circles against your back. It wasn’t the first time that there had been tears shed over the difficulty the two of you were having with of conceiving, but whenever you got emotional, Luke was always there to be your rock.
“Hey, Y/N, look at me.” He told you softly, and you lifted your head from his shoulder to look him in the eye. “That just means that it might be a little harder than we planned, alright? That doesn’t mean that it’s never going to happen. And if it turns out that trying on our own is too hard, there are tons of other options. We could go the artificial insemination route. We could try In Vitro. We could adopt. This won’t be the end of the road, baby. I promise.”
With a watery laugh, you kissed him deeply. He always knew just what to say to you when you were upset, and you were eternally grateful for moments like those. He was always going to be there for you, baby or not.
“I love you.” You told him, taking his face into your hands and pressing your forehead to his.

When you got accepted to a good university, the sun began to shine in a much different light. After slaving away in high school for four years of your life that were filled with drama and gossip and stressing over your gpa, getting accepted into uni was like a breath of fresh air. Getting the acceptance letter was an invitation to have a clean slate and finally pursue the path that you had always wanted to take professionally.
However, all of that meant that you had to move from Boston to Los Angeles and away from anything that you had ever known. Once the initial excitement of almost total independence wore off, it left an ache of fear that would keep you up at night as the date you had circled on the calendar drew nearer and nearer.
The plane ride was too long, the baby in the row behind you wouldn’t stop crying, and the man sitting next to you snored too loud, but once you arrived to LAX, it seemed like none of that even mattered. Everything was so different and after dreaming of getting out into the world for so long, California felt like the start of an incredible journey. And it really was.
Instead of paying for board, you decided to share an apartment with two other girls who were going to the same school as you were. After keeping in touch with them for a couple of months over text and skype, it was cool to see the two of them waiting for you in the terminal holding a big, glittery sign with your name on it. Their names were Joan and Carissa, both of them going into their sophomore year at the school, and they were beyond excited to be able to take a freshman under their wing and make a new friend. “I said, we need to go!” He replied. “Will you go with me?”

You let out a squeak of panic, but before too long, you began to laugh at the silliness of the situation, and he joined in, putting you down maybe half of a block later. “What the heck was that?” You asked, and to your surprise, he actually blushed.
He explained that he was part of a group that does challenges and pranks on YouTube called the Janoskians and that he wanted to know if he could use that clip in a public disturbance video. You mentally scolded yourself because you knew he looked familiar, and you couldn’t help but give a nervous laugh.
“Of course you can use it, I’m a, um, big fan.” You said, then introduced yourself.
“Y/N.” He repeated. “I’m Jai, and i hope i didn’t keep you from anything important.”
“Actually, my roommates probably think that i got abducted by a serial murderer on my way home from class, so thank you for that.” He laughed.
“I’d better get going then, shouldn’t I?” He asked, and you gave a short nod and a goodbye before continuing on the route to your shared apartment. You couldn’t stop smiling, and little did you know that that wouldn’t be the last time that you would encounter Jai.
In fact, you ran into him on the same block on the very next day, and the next after that as well. “I swear, it’s almost like we planned this.” You joked, and that earned a snort of laughter.
“Maybe it’s the universe trying to tell us something?” He remarked. “Should i maybe get your number?”
And you gave it to him. Of course you would, he’s Jai fucking Brooks.
The two of you became fast friends after that, texting almost every day. That soon grew to him visiting the coffee shops on campus some days to hang out with you. The two of you would talk about nearly anything and everything, and Jai turned out to be a really really cool guy. The two of you had more in common than you would've imagined, and that made him a joy to be around.
In fact, when you began to hang around with the rest of the boys more, you got pulled aside by his brothers on more than one occasion and asked what exactly it was that was between the two of you. Every time, you brushed it off as something platonic even though you really wanted it to be something more.
“What was that?” Jai asked you after the last time that they pulled you aside. They had left immediately afterward, saying something about how they were going to grab some drinks with another couple of friends.
“They just asked what we are.” You answered once you heard the front door close.
“What did you say?” He asked, putting a couple pieces of popcorn in his mouth. The two of you had decided to stay behind and have a movie night because he wasn't in the mood to go out and you didn't have classes the next morning.
“I told them that I really don't know.” You shrugged.
“Well, what do you want this to be?”
You frowned. “Honestly? I want there to be something between us. But I don't know if t I'm ready to be in another relationship, Jai. My last boyfriend was really awful to me and really emotionally abusive, and he's part of the reason that I chose to go to school so far from home.”
Jai nodded solemnly. “I understand, Y/N.” He told you. “My last girlfriend wasn't the best to me either.”
There was a long period of silence between the two of you. “So what does this mean for us?” He asked.
“How about we just let things happen as they happen. Let's not force anything and just go on like things have been?”
“Because if we force it, things will be weird?” He asked, and you nodded. “Ok, I'm good with that. Now pick a movie.”
You smiled and leafed through the brooks’ collection of DVDs. You couldn't explain it, but you had a feeling of good things to come, and it only got stronger as you settled next to Jai with a smile, stealing the popcorn bowl and pressing play.
