THROWBACK THURSDAY: Do you remember the VCR!?!?!? The Video Home System[1][2] (VHS)[3] is a standard for consumer-level use of analog recording on videotape cassettes. It was developed by Victor Company of Japan (JVC) in the 1970s. From the 1950s magnetic tape video recording became a major contributor to the television industry, via the first commercialized video tape recorders (VTRs). At that time, the devices were used only in expensive professional environments such as television studios and medical imaging (fluoroscopy). In the 1970s videotape entered home use, creating the home video industry and changing the economics of the television and movie businesses. The television industry viewed VCRs as having the power to disrupt their business, while television users viewed the VCR as the means to take control of their hobby. In the 1980s and 1990s, at the peak of VHS's popularity, there were videotape format wars in the home video industry. Two of the formats, VHS and Betamax, received the most media exposure. VHS eventually won the war, succeeding as the dominant home video format throughout the tape media period.[ Optical disc formats later began to offer better quality than analog consumer video tape such as standard and super-VHS. The earliest of these formats, LaserDisc, was not widely adopted. However, after the introduction of the DVD format in 1997, VHS's market share began to decline.[6][7] By 2008 DVD had achieved mass acceptance and replaced VHS as the preferred method of distribution.

Update from the City of Toledo on the sewer line collapse at Monroe & ProMedica Pkwy: Estimated repair time is 4 weeks, depending on the weather; detours remain in effect during that time. Details are in the press release below. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 29, 2015 Update on Sewer Restoration at ProMedica Parkway and Monroe Street Lane restrictions will continue on Monroe Street at ProMedica Parkway as repairs are made where a sewer collapse was discovered late yesterday afternoon. The intersection was secured overnight, and traffic detoured as heavy rains made it impossible to conduct OUPS testing required prior to entering the site for evaluation. Several utility lines were affected. The 12-inch storm sewer line that collapsed will be replaced. A 15-inch sanitary line that is 20 feet below the surface will be repaired. A broken 6-inch water distribution line will also be repaired, however water distribution crews provided alternate service and no one is without water at this time. The City has brought in a private contractor to make the needed repairs which at this time are expected to take up to four weeks, but dependent upon weather conditions. Traffic detours will remain in place until the restoration is completed and the roadway restored to use. Crews are still identifying the full extent of the damage and updates will be provided as they become available. ###

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a 2015 American epic[discuss] space opera film directed, co-produced, and co-written by J. J. Abrams. The seventh installment in the main Star Wars film series, it stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Max von Sydow. The Force Awakens is set approximately 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983),[5] where the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire have become the Resistance and the First Order, respectively,[6] and follows new leads Finn, Rey, and Poe Dameron alongside characters returning from previous Star Wars films.[5][7] The Force Awakens is the first film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, announced after The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of Lucasfilm in October 2012. The film is produced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Abrams, and his long-time collaborator Bryan Burk. Abrams co-wrote the film with Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote the original trilogy films The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi. Abrams and Kasdan rewrote an initial script by Michael Arndt. John Williams, composer for the previous six films, returns to compose the score. Star Wars creator George Lucas served as creative consultant during the film's early production stages. The Force Awakens is produced by Lucasfilm and Abrams' Bad Robot Productions and will be distributed worldwide by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Filming began in April 2014 in Abu Dhabi and Iceland, with principal photography also taking place in Ireland and Pinewood Studios in England. The Force Awakens premiered in Los Angeles on December 14, 2015, and is scheduled for release on December 18, 2015, in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D, more than 10 years after the release of the franchise's last major installment, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005). Critics compared it favorably to the original trilogy, praising its action sequences, characters, acting, and emotional drama, though some criticized it as derivative. Disney backed the film with an extensive marketing campaign, and it is expected to break box office records with projected profits exceeding $1 billion. Two sequels, Episode VIII and Episode IX, are scheduled for 2017 and 2019 respectively.
