Navigating Parenting with Scoliosis
Parenting is demanding for any parent, but adding scoliosis to the mix can bring unique challenges. Here's how living with a curved spine has shaped my journey through parenthood—and the lessons it has taught me about strength, resilience, and grace.
Parenting is a journey full of beautiful moments, unexpected challenges, and many chances to grow. For parents with scoliosis, this journey includes special physical and emotional hurdles.
Carrying a newborn, lifting a toddler, bending, cleaning, and comforting all put significant demands on the body. When scoliosis is involved, even routine tasks may need extra planning and patience.
One of the biggest lessons scoliosis has taught me as a parent is the need to listen to my body. Some days, my back needs rest. There are times I must change how I carry my child or ask for help. Accepting this was not always easy, but I've realized that taking care of myself helps me be more present for my family.
Parenting with scoliosis has also inspired me to be creative. I’ve found new ways to hold my child, discovered supportive feeding positions, and learned to make small adjustments that lessen strain on my back. Minor changes can lead to significant improvements over time.
There can be frustrating moments. Watching other parents easily perform tasks that leave me sore or exhausted can be discouraging. However, parenting isn’t about how much weight you can carry or how long you can stand without pain. It’s about the love, care, and presence you offer your children every day.
Children don’t notice the curve in your spine as you do. They see the parent who reads bedtime stories, kisses scraped knees, celebrates milestones, and provides comfort when needed.
Living with scoliosis doesn’t make someone a lesser parent. In fact, it can build resilience, empathy, and adaptability—traits that benefit both parents and children.
To every parent dealing with scoliosis: be kind to yourself. Celebrate what your body can do instead of focusing on what it can’t. Your strength comes not from having a perfectly straight spine but from the love and commitment you show your family each day.
Parenting may bring a few extra challenges when you have scoliosis, but it also highlights how strong, capable, and determined you really are.
