i know the obvious explanation is just that the movie sucks and is terrible and was written as lazily and cynically as possible, but the absence of suki (and then her lazily shoehorned in presence in the end credits) is actually impossible to explain from an in-universe perspective. because if suki isn’t part of the gaang anymore to the point that aang neglects to invite her on their field trip, then that could only really suggest one option: that she and sokka had a breakup so catastropic that the entire gaang was forced to take sides, and she was staunchly excommunicated from the friend group. but, since she is included in scenes that play during the end credits, then this suggests that this is not the case, that she and sokka, of course, remain happily coupled, and she is still very much a part of their group hangs. so the only feasible alternative is that aang did write to her, inviting her on his quest, and she was just like “nah, fuck that guy (the avatar). idgafff abt him (the avatar). im busy washing my hair tomorrow. he (the avatar) is on his own.” you know, how the leader of the kyoshi warriors who once sacrificed herself to protect his bison would act?

My hot take is that the gaang can be Aang + Katara + Sokka (because book 1) or Aang + Katara + Sokka + Toph (because book 2 when Sokka first decides to name their group) but it cannot be Aang + Katara + Sokka + Toph + Zuko because
