The Last Judgment Icon Fragment:
Vision of Daniel
Origin: Mshanets village, Lviv region, Ukraine. Late 15th – mid-16th century.
This exceptional excerpt from a Carpathian folk icon illustrates the apocalyptic beasts from the biblical Vision of Daniel (Daniel 7). The central rodent-like beast in a crown represents the tyrannical Fourth Kingdom. Surrounding hybrid monsters embody the remaining empires and cardinal sins. Mystical planetary roundels and pseudo-runic inscriptions (such as HFMXWH) reflect late-medieval astrological symbolism and eschatological folklore.
Location: Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv, Ukraine.
