Elle Greenaway Appreciation Week + Day Six, Underappreciated Moments: Becoming friends with Reid

When it comes to Elle, I’ll admit that the main things you see on her (with the exception of bashing) is her dynamic with Reid. As a whole their friendship is giffed and remembered, yet the initial stages of their friendship seem to be overlooked. Entering season one, Reid is an awkward bumbling guy shown to doubt himself and Elle is the newest member of the team determined to prove herself. Together they build a bond. As early as Compulsion we see Elle taking Reid’s feelings into consideration (‘And of course he’s a total psychopath’) and one of the moments that sticks out for me is how she tries to defend him to the group because she knows failing his qualification will be raw. Telling him the reason why he can’t get a date is because he never asked (and not because of his wide knowledge, which Derek had implied - however accidental or jokingly - was the reason) not only reassured him - but also gave him confidence because she compliments him beforehand when he was obviously feeling hurt by previous comments. Reid is shown to be open and joking with Elle (‘Probably? I totally saved your life. And I’m pretty certain that is was caught on tape’) and it is one of the first close relationships we see him having where he isn’t the butt of a joke or closed off to some degree. I also like the small touch of Elle giving Reid the images from the camera of him and Lila - and of course we all know how close they were from how he was the only one to see if Elle was okay in the hotel. Seasons have come and gone and Reid has built stronger friendships with the team and come into his own - but back when he was the awkwarder and younger boy trying to find his way, he grew close to Elle and their bond was unexpected but tight, an aid to both of them. Elle defended Reid and then Reid tried to help Elle in her darkest moments and I love the underappreciated origins to their friendship. Now, I know there was probably other, underappreciated scenes out there - especially compared to this - but I do think the early stages of this bond as a whole are forgotten about in favour of later scenes which is a shame.
