The idea of getting the family together to celebrate Thanksgiving in New York was not a bad idea at all. Michael had one of those amazingly high apartments that meant Adam and Dean could watch the parade live and in person. He bet Adam could even talk Dean in to going down into the streets which Sam thought they would both enjoy doing.
It would also mean that mom and dad got a vacation, which he knew they liked to do. No one talked about it much but the older all of the kids got, the more mom and dad talked about being able to go places for the holidays. Sam didn’t mind, just last year it had been only them, Dean, and Adam for Christmas because mom and dad had taken off early to take a trip. It was their retirement, Sam got it and he didn’t blame them. They still had their time spent together before they’d left and Sam was sure they would always have a few days.
“First off I think Thanksgiving in New York could be a lot of fun,” he answered, circling back around to it not sure why Cas had dismissed it and moved on to two more things before he could even so much as yay or nay the idea. Sometimes the man’s mind just got away from him he guessed.
“I also think proofing the backyard could be good,” he added. “We don’t know what dog we’ll get. I mean, even if we get an older one they might be high energy and we’ll kick ourselves if it got out and got hurt. And we can go walking, you know I won’t turn down a good walk.”
The thought of getting a drink wasn’t bad either, though as always he wasn’t sure what to do with the praise from Cas other than blush a bit.
Cas almost felt as if his ears pricked up — sort of strange since he’s always thought of himself as more like a cat than a dog. He had expected that traveling to New York for Thanksgiving would be too expensive and too difficult, but if Sam thought it was a good idea…
“I’d love that,” he said. “I think Michael would, too, even if he was a bit shocked. He doesn’t know what it’s like to have a big loud family for the holidays, actually enjoying each other’s company, instead of a strategically planned and catered party for the most important shareholders — who would probably prefer to be at home with their own families, given half a chance. Honestly…”
He thought for a moment.
“I think it would be good for Michael to meet Dean, too. He always seems so comfortable in his skin, and Michael sometimes doesn’t. I never was, until I knew you. It’s like — have you ever had to do a speech, and suddenly you don’t know what to do with your hands? You’re holding them there and you can’t even remember what you usually do with them, and they seem too big, and you can’t really remember how they work. That’s what I used to feel like about myself. And sometimes when I’m talking to Michael, or when we see each other… at work, he’s all business, completely professional and he just commands the room. But by himself, or when he’s supposed to be having fun… He doesn’t know where to put his hands.”
Wow. Sometimes Castiel was truly mystified as to how his metaphors went to the places they went. Hi poor brain. It needed a rest. Once he submitted his thesis, he was going to take a month off to do nothing but lie on the couch and read fiction.
“I’ll look into tickets, see if I can find any good deals.”
