Playing at the Earl in Atlanta, Georgia was Deerhoof. After the show I got to meet up with Ed Rodriguez, guitarist from Deerhoof and talk music and tour life for their band. Ed explained that “On tour when we are in a city, we don’t get to see much honestly, like for instance we drove 6 hours here to Atlanta and had to immediately get set up, but it’s totally worth it.” In other words, how I would also describe this, it’s like a connecting flight... you might be in Texas getting on your next plane. You’re in Texas but you’re not experiencing Texas you’re just in the airport but that doesn’t mean things have to be boring of course. I had asked about where they enjoyed playing the most or had the best audience/group. “With all of the fans around the world that we have encountered we have always had an amazing fan-base, everyone is always super nice. We have honestly gotten very lucky about that, everyone is just so great to us.” Ed and the rest were a pleasure to meet, glad we had a brief but very nice talk. I told Greg (the drummer) who made some funny jokes throughout the night of their performance that I was the one that yelled out “Satomi is a bad bitch!” and he responded “oh, if I knew it was you I would have escorted you out personally.” He’s a hilarious dude. They are so down to earth and caring with their fans. I even took some pictures with Satomi and my good friend Brianna. Thanks guys for such a rad night! you really made the 13 year old inside me come out and dance like crazy.
February 2015.
Just a few weeks ago I had the confirmation to photograph a band I very much enjoy. Performing at the Mammal Gallery in downtown Atlanta, GA was Holy Komodo. I did a brief interview with Nina from the band about their band and their new double EP's! I talked with them while they were on their way to their uncles place to record a song in a studio that their uncle was building.
what started Holy Komodo?
When it was started it was kind of a different incarnation of the group, Justin and Kyle were involved from the beginning and the ideas for the songs are Kyle’s and also our buddy Sam from Foxygen was also involved in Holy Komodo originally before Foxygen was happening so we had a couple of other friends involved too and this was about five to six years ago when they were all going to evergreen state college in Olympia where we live. What were your musical or theoligic influences for creating your double EP’s?
Well we kind of had a bunch of songs that were kind of separate but not totally separate styles that were moving in different directions because the group as it existed earlier did sort of more like a rocked out, straight up funk style, which is kind of the older songs “wanna be your lady” which we have a video for. That was one style and then our friend Joel started drumming for us and he makes his own various electronic/ hip-hop projects so he’s sort of brought this electro beat feel to it and then the songs kind of started to go in a smoother direction but they both existed in the group of songs that we had. So we released the songs separately since they had two different vibes. so reptile nation is kind of the older style, more lapped out and Satellite is our newer and smoother style. The artwork for each one Kyle drew all of these funky portraits of everyone in pastel. Joel has been doing a lot of photography in school so he photographed our cover for the satellite EP.
What kind of bands or musicians do you guys like to listen to while you’re on the road?
What do we listen to on the road? Hey guys what do we listen to on the road? we all really like dirty projectors, we listen to them a lot. We listen to Miguel who is this hip-hop artist that’s really great, we listened to Sly And The Family Stone the other day. I downloaded like hundreds of hours of this radio show I really love and I put it on my iPod for the preparation of the tour but I haven’t been able to listen to any of it at all, it’s the Author Gene Shepard, he wrote the movie “ The Christmas Story “ but he also had a radio show in the 60′s and 70′s in New York, His shows are really funny and you can hear them all they are all archived online for free. How do you all like to bring life to your live shows?
I guess we are still working on that, this is our first tour but we would like to have a set where the songs go into more of a flow instead of counting into the next show. Some places and nights are a little more party-ish and some are way more chilled out so we change the set every night but we would of course love to have more of a performance-art, more dance, not just song after song after song.
Since you’ve been on your first tour, how have your enjoyed it so far and what are your favorite moments of your tour?
My parents were just asking this us yesterday but our tour has been going really well. We had one tough night early in the tour where a band was screwing with us and trying to steal our stuff and then we got kicked out of the place we were supposed to sleep but that was the only bad thing really. We’ve been staying in some pretty cushy spots and seeing a lot of our friends. Not the best night but definitely the most memorable night was the second night on the road, we played with this band in Davis, California and they were just really wasted and just screwing with us the whole night and walking through our set-up while we were playing and kind of pushing us around, one was mooning our drummer through the screen door behind him and just fuckin with us all night. It was kinda crazy but also fun because Kyle very efficiently turned the whole audience against the guys and the audience were screaming “fuck those guys” so they were all on our side. It kind of ended up aggressive but the show was great and there was a lot of kids there so that was a memorable night.
What are your goals for the future in your band?
I guess the immediate goal is we would like to tour again in the fall and hit some spots we didn't get to on the West coast and we also want to work on some music videos and just getting it out there more and sharing some more. We all kind of have our own projects too and some of us are going to be away for parts of the summer, Joel is a camp counselor, we’re going to be doing some Foxygen so then we will reconvene after that.
Atlanta would love to see more of Holy Komodo and they are excited to tour back here as soon as they can. I want to personally thank them for the awesome support they give to all the communities they venture to and thank you for the EP’s you gifted to me!
