In popular Christian imagination, the quintessential Christmas story of the birth of Jesus centers on the so-called Nativity, a scene representing the infant Jesus, his mother Mary, and her husband Joseph in a humble manger. In the centuries prior to the Protestant Reformation in Northern Europe, however, many depictions of Jesus’ birth present a much more matriarchal view of the story. Shifting their focus away from the “nuclear family,” objects like this 16th-century oak sculpture depict Mary surrounded by only women. In this tender, quiet scene of intergenerational solidarity, a young midwife is shown preparing a bath and warm towels for the new mother, making sure she gets some much-needed quiet time with her newborn. Resting comfortably, Mary holds her baby boy close to her bosom, while her own mother, St. Anne, sits at the edge of the bed and looks on knowingly. Reflecting the realities of childbirth in families across Europe, images such as these succeeded in celebrating the fruit of Mary’s labor as well as the emotional labor of the women who supported her.
Merry Christmas!
