ok heads up this is going to be a long post but Taylor gave us easter eggs in the album and this is my decoding of it based on my own speculations, evidence from lyrics, and other theories i’ve read on instagram.first off, i think the love triangle is cardigan, august, and betty. also rebekah was the former owner of taylor’s rhode island house and i heard that she went by betty.

starting with cardigan- betty looks back on when james cheated on her, she is sad and broken-hearted, a truly beautiful melancholy song.

•“high heels on cobblestones” “when you are young, they assume you know nothing” “chase two girls, lose the one” “i knew you’d miss me once the thrill expired and you’d be standin’ in my front porch light and i knew you’d come back to me” “to kiss in cars and downtown bars”

august- from the pov of inez, describes the affair she had with james, is light hearted yet also wistful

•“cause it was never mine and i can see us twisted in bedsheets” “your back beneath the sun wishin’ i could write my name on it” “cause you weren’t mine to lose” “back when i was livin’ for the hope of it all” “remember when i pulled up and said “get in the car””

betty- from the pov of james, denotes his love for betty and how he deeply regrets the affair with inez

• “you heard the rumors from inez you can’t believe a word she says most times, but this time it was true” “i’m only seventeen, i don’t know anything” “i was walking home on broken cobblestones” “she pulled up like a figment of my worst intentions she said “james, get in, let’s drive”” “yeah, I showed up at your party will you have me? will you love me? will you kiss me on the porch” “standing in your cardigan kissin’ in my car again”

everything in the same color font represents pieces of parallelism i found woven between the songs. i love the symbolism of the cardigan representing betty and james’ relationship long gone, yet an ever present reminder of what once was. anyways, well done @taylorswift folklore is a masterpiece of an album and it should be studied in english classes 😌

I know red and folklore are super similar musicaly but story and theme wise, she is speak now all grown up. Speak now was her fantasies of running through an enchanted forest in a ball gown while folklore is the realities... realizing you’ve gotten lost in the woods and you ballgown is really a ripped up dress and a cardigan. She was running with her prince but realized their were bumps in the road and she will come in contact with thorns. This album is Taylor growing up and as someone who’s been really scared of growing up folklore made me realize, it’ll be scary but it will okay to grow up and face my realities instead of just my fantasies. I know this isn’t exactly where anyone’s head is at with this album but it’s how I see it and how it’s helping me ✨

I know you’ll never see this but in the event that you do, I just want you to know how much you mean to me. I’ve been listening to and relating to your music ever since I was eight years old. Whether I’m in the back of the car, in my mirror, in my shower, or basically anywhere I always find your music making my day better.
