My Forrays into World building

Hi. I'm the Madcap Writer. I'm trying to build a world, and I wanted to chronicle my adventures, in the hope that maybe some people would find it enjoyable, or inspiring, and I would be able to see how my writing skills have progressed. If you don't like it, that's fine, don't read. If you have thoughts or questions, or points you want to raise, go ahead and send them to me. You’re a daycare worker, watching over toddlers, when the imminent end of the world is announced. It becomes increasingly clear none of the kids’ parents are going to show up as the end inches nearer.

[Audio starts]

“Mom has been texting me for the last twenty minutes. She wants me to come home. It’s a four hour drive, when the roads are clear, and from what I hear everybody is trying to get somewhere right now. There’s no telling if I’d even-”

“Everybody else has left. All the other kids were picked up, the other staff left. They gave me all the keys. I promised to stay and wait for as long as- well. Even if some of the parents show up, I guess some of them won’t, so I’m just waiting. Until.”

[Clears throat.]

“A couple of people came after everybody left. Peter, one of Aidan’s fathers, gave me three hundred dollars for staying. What am I going to do with money? It’s- anyway. I kind of get it. He wanted to give me something.”

[Audio ends]

[Audio starts]

“They’re all between 2 and 4.” Sniff. “They’re so little. Too little to really- maybe if they were older, I’d have to tell them something. But um. I’m just- trying to stay calm and keep them happy and occupied. I think that’s the best thing, right now.”

[Heaving breaths.]

“I normally use this recorder to help me remember stuff. It’s just, uh, habit to talk to it. I don’t know. They’re napping, right now. I’ve got the baby monitor, they know that if they talk into it, I’ll come, so-”

[Sobbing.]

[Audio ends]

[Audio starts]

“Mom keeps texting, so I blocked her. I sent her a text telling her goodbye, first, but. I do. But these kids need me.”

[Sniff.]

“I tried calling their parents again, but I can’t get anybody. It’s just busy signals. I called the firefighter station, 911. I can’t get through to anybody.”

[Shaky breath.]

“I went out into the yard. Um, I think they can play. It’s nice out, and you can’t really see it yet. Little bit of a glimmer, if they ask I’ll just tell them it’s a plane, but it’s nice out and we’ve got hours before-”

[Murmuring child’s voice, indistinguishable.]

World type

This is probably important to figure out, what type of world will I be using? I’ve got this urge to take everything I’ve ever wanted in a world and throw it all into this one, but something tells me that’s a bad idea. So i’m going to take a page out of Brandon Sanderson’s books (Oh my gosh that man is amazing Seriously check out Skyward: boy and his dragon type story, but with a girl and her spaceship) and have a multiverse, but with a few potential characters that bounce around. (And never really the same name).

Okay, so we got a universe; now for our world. I like medieval clothing and styles, and the practicality of modern outfits, so I think I’m going to go with a world similar to almost every “transported to another world ooh magic” anime out there (Looking at you, In another world with my smartphone, and That time I got Reincarnated as a Slime) This means tunics that are very similar to shirts, pants are totally a thing here, Women, wear what you want, could be bikini armor for all I care, magic, oh my gosh yes and that’s a whole other post, leather harnesses, spandex is somehow a thing as well, and silk. I have recently discovered the joys of silk. Cool and warm. yes please. Guns....let’s say flintlock’s are a thing, and revolvers will show up soonish.

Now for what we’ll call it. I’m going to try to use that one tactic of writing down what it is, and then taking out vowels and stuff and replacing others.

Adventurer World, adventurerworld, aventuerwurld, Avenwurld, Avenwurd, Avenward. Yeah, let’s go with that; Avenward. We can have lovely plot bunnies in the form of What’s/where’s Aven, and why are we going there. Of course, each race will likely use a slightly different name-- Actually. Hmm....

Question time! Did other cultures IRL have a different name of Earth other than...well...Earth? I’m guessing it came out of the word for dirt and ground, but when did it get applied to the Planet, and when/why did everyone accept that?

TL;DR. I’m naming the particular world that’s anime adventurer style Avenward.

Black Copper

This is an idea i had for a substance in my world. It’s copper, but with black veins running through it, and happens to have a special relationship with magic. It can be used to channel magic, without the magic draining away into the air as fast. The black veins are a particular substance that’s not quite been Identified, but one of my OC’s is going to be a hulking orc-ish type dude (eight or nine foot tall) that absolutely loves researching, and this is his latest project.

It’s pretty common, but the better quality peices have more black veins in them. The best ones are found in the roots of the ancient mountains of the dwarven mines.

There’s an ongoing counterfeiting issue in [main country] where poor theives paint the outside with dyed-black copper paint to mimic the veins. Clever thieves hollow out the black copper rocks, and fill the inside with plain copper. It weighs just as much, when you assess it magically it even shows up as the same substance, and those are harder to crack.

I found a thing. An amazing thing. You know all those things to help you create a map of a world? Like spread the macaroni around, or roll this crazy number of dice? Yeah. So i found a thing.

It’s called mapgen4. https://www.redblobgames.com/maps/mapgen4/  

Basically, it generates maps, but in a really cool way. You pick a seed, and then it creates a random map. Then you use the little tools to adjust the landmass, and elevation, and water distribution, snow, and other such things. You can even change what direction the prevailing winds come from, and thus which sides of the map are drier. It’s really cool, and I highly recommend checking it out if you need a map of some fantasy land.

Sup.

Hi. My name is...well, you might be fae, so I’m not giving you my name. You may call me The Madcap Writer, though.

Basically, I’ve got a world. A huge, massive world with a thousand different things. And I can’t really remember all of them.

So I’m going to start putting things here. That way I can look back on things and see how I’ve progressed in my world-building, and writing, and general scene setting. I’m not as good with characters, but I want to create the world first. That’s what I enjoy doing, so I’m going to do it. (Also some people might find this little blog in some dark corner of tumblr and decide they want to read it. Cool. Even one follower makes putting this out there worth it.)

I’ve already got some ideas for it, and I’ve put some things into this one really cool site called worldanvil.com, I recommend checking it out if you’re trying to do the same thing.

I’ve even got a map of the place, but frankly it looks a bit too much like North America, so I’m probably not going to use it for more than basic reference, and I’ll create a better map later. (When i have time and a big piece of graph paper)

I’ve tagged this post with any generic tags I can think of that fit, but I’m going to use more specific ones in my regular posts.
