My family and I are on a roadtrip down to southern Europe for a few weeks this summer and this has happened during the time:
- A 50+ man starred at my 15 year old sister in a way older men shouldn't, our dad told us to take it as a compliment.
I almost roared at my father in a mall full of people about how wrong it was and I wish I told him about pedophilia.
- My sister and I walked to a supermarket and back for some Friday snacks. During the last three minutes of our walk back home we got catcalled twice, the second time from some guys in a car who shouted at us that we have nice asses and pretty faces, after they had jumped along with the car which almost made my sister stop to help them, I don't dare to think what would have happened if they actually had stopped. We rushed the last few hundred meters to our door, shouted and pounded on it until our dad came, we told our parents about what had happened and they said that we're two blonde, pretty girls from Sweden and that they can't help it
I told them that no matter how we look, nobody has the right to comment on our bodies, I cried until 12:30am that night then washed my face four times because I no longer feel like a pretty girl and my body feels wrong. I wish I told them that all the body positivity that I've ever learned have never been from them because they always say the wrong stuff and all I know comes from strangers on the internet.
So yes catcalling is truly amazing if one wants to make another person feel absolutely disgusting and make them cry themselves to sleep.
