The Master?

Yeah, so clearly there's a bit of a story here. Way back in the day, John Simms arrived to play the Master in Doctor Who. And he apparently died at the end of the two-part episode. Yes, I know he didn't. But, when that episode aired, we didn't know how or when he'd be back (or that he would eventually be back as a she...) So, wanting to play a villain, I brought him back. Using that ring he wore. See, I assumed that the Master had backed up his mind in the ring. It was found by two drunk chavs who, egged on by the Master, got into a fight. One killed the other and claimed the ring, only to get his mind eaten for his troubles. Yes, I stole it from the story of how Gollum found the One Ring. Why not? This version of the Master was cranky as hell, trapped in the limited confines of a human body and hating it. He became an arms dealer and information broker, trading xenoartifacts and his knowledge of future events for wealth and power. When the (other) Master transformed all the Earth into the Master, he partially resisted - he retained his own appearance, but his body exams a Galllifreyan body. It was around this time that I decided he wasn't quite the Master, partly because I was trimming back on my canons and letting someone else take on the role. So I decided he was a compressed, incomplete backup. Around that time, he also developed a mad one-sided infatuation with Sarah Jane Smith. This triggered his slow evolution into an antihero. He's still a monster ad a sociopath, but now he amuses himself crippling interstellar criminal networks.

If you must know, the Meddler earned the Grand Diplóme from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. In 1897. After being trapped in 11th century England for a century by the Doctor, he really wanted to know how to cook. Just in case.

The Meddler and the Dreamweaver

Sisilaya Vulmecura was, on the face of it, a character that shouldn't have worked in a Doctor Who role-play. She was the half-fairy daughter of a Chameleon Arched Time Lord, born in 16th century Ireland and dumped into the 33rd century when a mob burned her mother as a witch and flayed her father into Regeneration. Oh, and it turned out her father had dumped her there, tormenting her because he hated his half-breed spawn (after his Regeneration, that is). It sounded ridiculous, and the other moderators wanted to deny the application. I thought it was great, because it embraced the ridiculousness that the Doctor has done over the decades. He's battled demons and gods, after all. So I pushed to approve her, pointing out that a sci-fi gloss could be added. Make the Sidhe aliens made of living psychic energy, and you're good to go. I managed to get my way, and she was approved. Her first IC introduction to the board was pretty lame. She created an open thread, describing herself wounded as she falls through time from the 33rd century to contemporary London, struggling for sanity in the face of a genuinely horrible back story. Our tenth Doctor took the bait, but ended up talking to a third player who wanted to chat about sonic screwdrivers, utterly ignoring the traumatized woman. So I stepped in with the Meddler and, in a fit of inspiration, declared that the Meddler spoke the language of the Sidhe, was the Puck (yes, that Puck), and claimed he was her godfather. It was magic. Sisi was the Meddler's constant traveling companion after that, two wandering fools touring time and space. They met Joan of Arc and Jack Harkness. He taught her to fly his TARDIS and tried to train her as an apprentice, and discovered he had a personal grudge against her father as well. The two of them cracked open the Time War to rescue another Time Lord, and she was exposed to the Vortex and became a full-powered Sidhe and a Time Lord to boot (taking the title "the Dreamweaver"). Along the way they fell in love, and married on Earth in the 1930s when they were both human. (They were hiding from the agents of an alternate-history Gallifreyan that invaded the main line of History), and had three children - a fact that, at least in character, stunned everyone who knew him. Eventually, Sisi's player left the board. Real life has its demands, after all. But the Dreamweaver has permanently stamped her mark across the Meddler's history. Without her, I doubt the character (or my interest in Whoniverse) would have lasted as long as it did.
