Okay but imagine being the team of Eridian scientists tasked with keeping Erid's Only Human alive for as long as possible while the whole planet's environment is literally trying to kill him. And then Rocky shows up and is like:

“Grace says he would like half of dome to be water.”

“Oh, is necessary for humans to have large amounts of water question?”

Small Eridian equivalent of a sigh. “No. Not needed for life. In fact Grace will die if he falls in water and does not get out.”

“Tell him we give him water in containers that won't kill him. Lots lots lots of water on Erid for Grace to drink.”

“No. Grace say he want water on ground. Also want it with excess sodium chloride compound so it will be unhealthy for drink.”

“WHY QUESTION???”

To celebrate Erid getting their sun back on track, Grace asks for some alcohol. There's a small amount left from the Hail Mary and Rocky offers to take it to the science Eridians to see if they can synthesise more.

“Grace want this liquid for celebration.”

“Of course.” They scan it. “You have wrong liquid. This contain compounds which are poisonous for humans.”

“Yes yes yes. Grace say humans like feeling of being slightly poisoned.”

“WHY QUESTION?????”

Grace is like one of those extremely finicky tropical fish who instantly die if not kept in extremely specific conditions.

Only here the fish can talk and keeps asking you to make it vodka.

I think if Jonathan Sims and Kim Soleum switched places (Soleum gets a job as The Head Archivist, and Jon becomes a new Daydream Field Exploration Employee), Soleum would do absolutely fine and would probably figure everything out in Season 1 and escape, meanwhile Jon would die immiedatly in orientation.

My reasoning is that Soleum is pretty smart and willing to accept things. So he'd probably figure out all these statements are REAL, go investigating in the archives, figure out Elias is real, maybe even find Gertrudes tapes. He's rlly not connected to the eye yet and no real horrors are going on at the start of season 1 so hes fine. Plus he'd figure out that you cant quit almost immediately because he's smart and would try to quit. And as long he hurries up before Elias or anyone else catches up, and removes those eyes... Bam! Escaped!!

Meanwhile Jonathan Sims over here, Season 1 version who doesnt work well with others, refuses to believe in most supernatural statements, and is way too curious would DIE day 1. He either 1. Just steps off the subway because "Obviously this isn't supernatural 😒" and DIES or 2. He manages to stay on the subway but doesn't actually help the team escape so he just DIES. And if he SOMEHOW makes it past that you can bet he is NOT surviving anything else. He is NOT brave and he is WAY TOO CURIOUS AND EAGER TO LEARN. He is dying, quitting, or getting contaminated.

rereading gsgw. and i'm staring at the Cheerful Theme Park arc re: my whole bit about Named Characters if anyone remembers that

cuz like, Bison introduced himself to kse, right. But his name is never used by the narration until chapter 26, which is insane, because he introduced himself in chapter 19. For seven chapters straight, the narration only says "the Y-squad rookie" and such. Same thing for the researcher who gets thrown in and dies! His name's Lee! But the narration never calls him "researcher Lee", it just says "the researcher".

Now I seriously need to pay attention to this for the whole readthru.

SAME DEAL FOR JIN NASOL!! MAN!! her name is first brought up in chapter 19 as well, but only by kse mentally quoting DER. She gets referred to ONCE as "Assistant Manager Jin" in chapter 20, but it's also all "the assistant manager with the butterfly mask", and the first full mention of Jin Nasol by narration is chapter 110.

On my initial read of the novel i was honestly quite annoyed with all the epithets at points, but now I'm entirely convinced it's deliberate.

this has now lead me to look at other characters for shits and giggles.

And the final boss of this I could find quickly is Jay. He introduces himself in chapter 66, and is first referred to as Jay outside of dialogue by the story in chapter 169, otherwise just "the sergeant" for all those arcs.

There are a lot of characters where this doesn't happen. Go Yeongeun + Baek Saheon both get their names used immediately, Agent Choi does, Bronze has his codename used as soon as he introduces himself... But it's so weird still to have three examples (with Jay being the most egregious) where there's this extremely long stretch of just using epithets when Kim Soleum already knows people's names.

the exception to all my theories remains Yoon Johoon but like in my defense i wanna say. The guy didn't die. He was erased from reality. Un-named. It's different guys it still works I swear. (Unless a lot of things happen in the chapters I haven't read yet)

But I ask again.

HOW THE HELL DOES IT TAKE A HUNDRED CHAPTERS TO USE JAY'S NAME IN NARRATION?????

was gonna wait until i had a more polished design/art but yk i want to share my wips w u guys too... i've been attempting to design jang heowoon(장허운) recently... here's a bunch of quick phone doodle hair tests... still narrowing down the design... UPDATE: added another doodle test...! trying to get out the expressions i picture in my head... >_<
