The striking near-black War Emblem won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness stakes in 2002. A free-running colt with a bad temper and a dislike for people in general, War Emblem also won the Illinois Derby and Haskell Invitational en route to being named Champion 3 Year Old that year. After poor finishes in his next two races, he was retired and sent to stud in Japan where his quirky temperament made him a notoriously reluctant/choosy breeder, and his output of progeny was small but successful. Upon being pensioned from stud duty, he was returned to the United States where he died four years later at 21.
