What about witchcraft? I know I can’t actually become a witch, but is there anything you can tell me about that I can learn, that might help?

Well, there are some things that react differently in your hands than ours. For example, Mountain Ash is something Stiles can manipulate. I can handle it, but it doesn’t have the same affect. Learning about that would be a start.

And, I know this has nothing really to do with magic, but the way I understand it... you’re kind of like a grounding force for your alpha. Figuring out what she needs is probably a good way to go too.

The thing is…I am not sure I have one. At least, not a strength that is greater than anyone else’s. Of all of the hunters, I am the least experienced. And…well, it turns out, I am an emissary. But I don’t have the knowledge or abilities that Stiles has. And I’m not a werewolf, or a witch, or a genius…I am just Sandy.

You don’t have to be more skilled or more knowledgeable than anyone else to be helpful or be strong. What makes you strong is how you see the world and how you adapt to it. You just learned about being from a hunting family and that you are an emissary. And girl, you jumped right in!

That doesn’t happen with everyone! As I see it, you are as brave as they come!

Well, with everything that is going on with Peter, I just feel like I am not as prepared as everyone else. I was wondering if you could help me…well, be more prepared to help.

Oh, well as far as I know, most of us aren’t terribly prepared to deal with Peter either.

Which, isn’t exactly comforting, I know. But... hmm. What would you say you feel is your biggest strength or something you feel better about than anything else when it comes to these sort of things?

Like…like something out of a horror movie.

We…take a form that reflects who we are inside. Those of us who are able to transform into full wolves fully accept the part of them that is a wolf, and are not afraid of it. Those of us who partially transform are…holding back, in some way. But werewolves who want to use their abilities to hurt others and be violent and cruel take a form that reflects that darkness and cruelty.

I hope he doesn’t, too. I don’t think he will. But…I am not completely sure.

Basically…all of us.

I... I really don’t want to know what that looks like.

It’ll be okay, Lucy. We’ll get through this. I mean, the djinn was awful, but if we can survive that, we can survive Peter... right?

He’s tall, and has lighter hair than Derek or Cora…more like Jackson, Katie, and Malia. He has brown eyes, but blue when he turns. When he’s a werewolf, he is…a monster. He looks like something from a nightmare.

But when he is human, he usually dresses nicely, and acts polite. Derek…might have a picture somewhere. I’m not sure, though…I would understand if he does not.

Maybe…but I am not sure. If he thinks someone is a bigger threat, or…or someone he can use to get to someone, or something, that he wants, I think he may target them, too.

Worse than the djinn-type nightmare?

I almost hope he doesn’t. I wouldn’t ever want to see his face in real life or in a photo if he did half the things he’s done.

So... the alphas then. And basically all of us.

I think it is. And no…he tried to get Scott to kill Allison, and I…I don’t know if it was because she is an Argent, or just because he wanted to. He doesn’t have compassion for anyone; all he cares about is power.

But I know his scent. If he is coming, I’ll know.

So... I would imagine the Argents, especially Malia, would be especially targeted somehow, right?

…He…was in the Hale house, when Kate set the fire. He survived it, but he was badly hurt. While he was in the hospital, he…he came up with his plan, I guess. He pretended to still be unresponsive, and tricked his nurse into helping him sneak out at night. He lured Laura Hale back to Beacon Hills, and…he killed her. He killed his niece, like that, like it was nothing, just so he could steal her power. He…he ripped her body to pieces and left her in the woods. Because he wanted to lure Derek back and kill him, too.

He bit Scott with the intention of building a new pack in Beacon Hills. He almost killed Lydia to trigger her banshee abilities so he could use them to control her if we beat him the first time…and we did…and he did. He drugged us, he controlled Lydia, he used Derek to bring himself back to full power. Every single time we thought we knew what he was doing, he always had another plan set in motion. He wants to be in control of Beacon Hills…and I don’t think he cares at all what he has to do to get that control.

That’s so awful!

So he plans on taking over Beacon Hills. That’s his end game. And he clearly doesn’t have any compassion to be able to do something that horrible to Lydia and and Derek, let alone his own niece.

I know. And Peter is…Derek being freaked out is perfectly reasonable where Peter is concerned. He’s not just a power hungry werewolf with a grudge, he’s also practically an evil mastermind. Whatever we did before…it was like he was always two steps ahead of us, and always had a backup plan, and a backup plan for that backup plan…

That sounds impossibly intimidating.

What has he tried so far? Maybe we could find a pattern to his madness?

About the same. This is…really bad. But we’re going to get through this. We just have to find out what Peter took from the vault, and whether or not he is still in town, and stop him.

I know. And we will stop him. It’s just... unnerving to see Derek so freaked out, you know?

And, that scares me a lot. I’ve never dealt with Peter before... I’m not quite sure what to expect.

We’ll be alright. We’re almost back. And the scent is fading.

We’ll need a druid to be downstairs– Stiles. I don’t want him to be alone; I’ll stay downstairs as well. And Allison. We need a distance marksman. Once we make sure everyone is inside, let’s meet in my apartment to come up with our next step.

[Natalie started to calm down the closer they came to the apartments. She couldn’t help but appreciate how collected Derek’s thoughts were in a dangerous situation. She eventually loosened her grip on Derek’s arm as they walked into the entrance of the apartment complex.]

Okay, I’ll send Stiles down on my way to get the rest of the girls. If you have Allison by you, you should get Rory or Duncan to cover us from the top floor. Scott can stay upstairs with them for backup.

[Derek slowed his pace a bit, making sure Natalie could keep up. He took a deep breath to steady himself; his fear would increase her own, and that wouldn’t help anyone. Additionally, his own anxieties were overruled by a desire to reassure her and keep her safe.] You’re safe with me. I promise.

The wards will be important. Once we check the apartment, we put mountain ash around the building. It traps us in, but it will keep him out, too. Keeping him away from everyone is the priority. And a few people should keep watch. We can take shifts.

[Natalie nodded and forced a smile, but it didn’t bring her heart rate down.]

I know. I just don’t want anything to happen to you while keeping me safe.

Good. We’ll reinforce the wards and get the mountain ash down. Hopefully everyone is already home, but someone can stay downstairs to let everyone else in. We should do a head count to make sure everyone is safe.

Wait. [Derek held an arm out protectively in front of Natalie.] There’s a scent.

[Derek paused, his blood running cold. Surely the scent he was picking up could not possibly be what he thought it was. And yet…of course it could, and of course it was. Turning, he kept close to Natalie and steered her back towards the apartment building.] We need to leave now. We’ll come back with more people tomorrow. Peter is the one who broke in.

[Natalie stopped without touching Derek’s arm, yet she could still feel the fear that came off of him. She wrapped her arm around Derek’s as he turned her back towards the apartments.]

Peter? Oh shit.

[She kept pace with Derek as best as she could. Natalie kept a hold of his arm, both as a comfort to him and to herself. She had never encountered Peter before, but the stories she heard from the other pack members gave her goose bumps. Just feeling a little of what Derek felt just now was enough to put terror back into her heart.]

Shit shit shit. I can get the girls to help me reinforce the protective wards. Is there anything else we can do to keep us safe tonight?
