BACKGROUND: 

grew up in nightrest in an upper-middle class household, with a few siblings. his family was very loving, and never placed many expectations on any sibling besides wanting them to try their best. theo was best known for his personality, rather than any talents. he wasn’t particularly smart, or athletically gifted, but he was always very friendly and outgoing. as a result, in school, his grades usually suffered and theo often needed a tutor to pass most classes, but he was known for being a fun-loving pretty boy. 

to compensate for being an average student, theo tried to work at least to show his parents he wasn’t entirely useless. he worked at mama’s for a couple months before getting fired, waiting tables and having to remember so many things hard for him at the time. since he’d taken care of one of his little sisters when he was growing up, theo figured he’d be good at babysitting, and started doing that to make some money. it helped that he was well liked, despite being a little slow, and many of the mothers in town saw him as cute and let him help out. he babysat for a particularly rich family that lived in stoughton estates for a while, the mother a talent agent who was often out of town for work. after babysitting her kids for about a year, she told him that he was good-looking enough to become a model, and offered to take him on as a client granted he move to la when he graduated high school. seeing as he didn’t have any idea of what he wanted to do, theo agreed and his parents supported him.

when he moved to la, he managed to do well when he started off, booking small gigs at first and eventually becoming well known enough to land himself on the covers of magazine and become a print model for designer brands. though, it wasn’t his pretty face that got him entirely there, as he had a charm that appealed to more than a few female celebrities, becoming known for brief flings with older women that were often over the tabloids. without really noticing, he developed a reputation and became favored by most female photographers in the industry. theo just figured they were being nice, and didn’t entirely get why. 

he became well off, but over time, he felt like a lot of his life had become superficial. in the beginning, he had fun modelling and being able to make a name for himself, but it had began to feel like more of a chore than anything else after all those years and have more of a stable life. when he heard what happened in nightrest at the charity gala, he decided to move back home, missing the place he’d grown up with and wanting to see the people he’d missed.

having only a high school diploma and modeling experience, there wasn’t a lot of opportunity for a new job for theo. he had made more than enough money to live comfortably for a while, but he was the kind of person that grew bored easily, so he wanted to have something to do and feel happy about. theo remembered enjoying babysitting kids a lot when he was younger, his easgoing demeanor making it easy for pretty much all babies and children to like him. he had a few connections around town still, and got a recommendation to become dilara kaplan’s new live-in nanny.

Maybe he should’ve been more cautious. 

The faint sound of Catherine Graves was a constant during the evening news, so much so that if it wasn’t a name or a picture on the screen, the echoes of warnings fell on deaf ears as Theo left his house, deciding to go out for a change and head to one of the bars in town. He hadn’t gone out very much since returning to Nightrest, but once upon a time, he’d been well acquainted with the concept. Over his years, despite how short of a time they’d felt, Theo found himself chilling out, wanting to live a more relaxing, peaceful life. It was why he returned to Nightrest, missing his home.

Truthfully, he moved back to his hometown because he wanted to remember what it felt like to be happy again. Something he’d found, even amongst the death and the sadness they all had faced.

It was just a few drinks, mingling with the few people he’d run into along the way before exiting the bar. He didn’t want to overdo it, remembering he had plans with Sarah in the morning. Theo was giddy just thinking about it, thinking about her. He’d always found himself lost in his mind when it came to her, the rest of the world becoming a blur. He’d been thinking about asking her to be his girlfriend, making things official. He wanted to give Sarah the world, or at least the little bit of it that he could, and he couldn’t ignore the way she’d been tugging at his heartstrings since he moved back.

Would tomorrow be the day?

He pondered the idea, tilting his head to the side as he began the walk to his car, not noticing there was someone following behind him. Maybe he should’ve been paying attention. Maybe he should’ve listened to the warnings about staying safe. If he had, maybe the world wouldn’t have suddenly turned black, combined with a sharp pain in the back of his head. Maybe he should’ve been quicker. With not just this moment, but with his life. With moving back here, and with Sarah. Maybe if he’d gone after what he wanted sooner, he wouldn’t be in this position.

The next time he woke up, Theo wasn’t sure how long it had been, head and body slumped over on the floor and his vision feeling blurry. He couldn’t move, maybe because he was in shock, but mostly because the more he tugged at his own body, fighting to regain his senses, it was clear he’d been tied up, left to lay on the ground with no escape. There was a piece of cloth tied around his mouth, any cries for help muffled and only attracting attention to himself. His vision grew blurry, and he could only make out someone walking towards him. It was then when the fear set in, and before he could react, his side was kicked in, over and over again until Theo was hunched over on his side, tears dripping onto the hard pavement and his mouth hurting from biting down so hard. He tried to look up, tried to see who was doing this to him, if he’d made some kind of enemy coming back to town. But just as his head slightly rose, there was a sharp pain attached with it, the feeling of his hair being harshly gripped only for his skull to be bashed into the floor. He was shaking, the overwhelming amount of pain rushing through his body and causing him to grow unconscious again.

The next time he woke up, there was a knife in his gut.

It jolted him awake, unable to fully react or comprehend before the blade felt as if it was plunged into a new spot, a cry of pain leaving his muffled mouth, any pleas or attempts to get help drowned out by the fabric. His eyes can only make out someone standing over him, a few more cuts and stabs enough to satisfy whoever it was for the time being. There’s blood seeping onto the floor, staining his clothing, his hair, his face. He’s left covered in his own blood, his own pain as the figure walks away and his eyes succumb to darkness again.

Time has become a foreign measurement to Theo. He can’t tell how often he’s painfully woken up, whether it be a physical battering or a blade ready to carve him out whole. He’s lost track of how many times it’s been, mind empty and destroyed from the turmoil and strain put on his body. Everytime his eyes open, he wonders if it will be the last. He hopes it’ll be the last. Theo loses hope in anyone finding him, in anyone uncovering the screams and cries of pain that are echoed out. There are moments where he can hear someone else, but it’s too far. Everything feels so far right now, and he can’t scream loud enough to get anyone’s attention besides the very people he wants to escape.

His mind drifts to Sarah. His sweet, best friend Sarah. There are tears streaming down his face after another beating, except this time, it’s because he’s thinking about her. Theo doesn’t realize how many regrets he holds when it comes to her. How if he’d been better, if he’d been wiser, he would’ve been able to give her the world. Instead he’d spent his adolescence pining after her, smiling at her cluelessness but never gaining the courage to tell she was his everything. Instead he left her to pursue a career that never fulfilled him, never made him happy because every smile or ounce of praise he got didn’t compare to the teasing or playfulness of her. Instead, he’d waited for her to make the first move, letting her guide the pace between their gradual change in relationship. There were so many things he hadn’t said, and it burdens him right now most of all.

I want to be your boyfriend. I moved back here because of you. You’re my person, my happiness. I love you.

In the little stream of consciousness, Theo made himself feel better, dreaming of what could’ve been and what should’ve been. Everything he should’ve said but would never be able to. The pain he feels right now thinking about her doesn’t compare to the pain coursing through every part of his body. Somehow, it pales in comparison, and he finds himself sobbing at the thought. Theo finds his own heart breaking with no escape, nowhere to run and only left to drown in his own tears and blood. He wants it to end. 

Vision blurred again by his shiny eyes, tearful and sad, Theo looks up, each breath he lets out ragged and shallow. Maybe he’s hallucinating, maybe it’s because of who’s on his mind, but he freezes looking at the sight in front of him. A couple. Kissing. He can’t be sure if his mind deceives him, if he’s so close to his end that he’s imagining a reality that doesn’t exist, but the picture looks more clear as his eyes focus. A couple. Kissing. He can make out the shadows, the way one tugs the other close and the way the distance between their faces ceases to exist. It’s a pretty picture, and as he looks, he thinks of her again. He finds himself watching until the world fades into black again, letting himself be foolish and imagine things were different. After being forced into unconsciousness so many times, he begins to savor it, creating a story in his mind of him being happy. Theo wonders if it’s wrong, if instead of grasping onto dreams, he should be fighting for his life. 

But he’s full of heart, and full of dreams. Theo had always been that way, always the hopeful and happy. At least he can feel his own heart beating, quickening in pace at times and slowing down in the worse moments. He has his heart, until he doesn’t.

It isn’t long before the shred of peace, the shred of happiness he’s held onto is ripped away, the feeling of a knife entering his heart indescribable. Time stops, and this time, he doesn’t let out a cry or a shriek of pain. Theo remains in shock, a knife lodged into the perfect spot of his chest before it’s pulled out, the immediate weakness being a sign it’s the end. It’s as if they knew his greatest weakness, a singular tear slipping down his cheek as the remaining feeling of hope shreds away. He wants to close his eyes, but they remain open, left to watch them walk away the same way they had the first time. Except he knows it’ll be the last, and it’s merely a waiting game. He feels it all, the way his heart slowly stops, the way every part of him shuts down but his mind, trapped in a body that would never move again. He holds onto her in his last moment, he thinks about how he wants her to be happy without him. How he wants to have the world even if it’s not him who’ll give it to her. His heart is empty, dying with every passing moment, but his soul is full of her. He closes his eyes, wondering if an image of her will appear but it remains blank. It’s over. Their story. His story.

His body grows limp, head hitting the ground with a thud and he can no longer think of Sarah. He can no longer think of anything. It’s the end of their story. The end of his.

Not everyone can have their happy ending.

“You don’t seem so positive,” she says, noting the way his words came out like a question. Charlotte’s always felt Theo and Sarah had a special bond, which is one that usually comes with a best friend, something she felt with Kyle and Mal. Granted, the jump from friends to more is huge, the dynamic shifts, so she understands Theo’s hesitance and nervousness. She tilts her head slightly to the side when he admits to getting around, something he shouldn’t probably say to Sarah’s sister. “That’s in the past, is it not? As long as you’re being honest and focusing on her right now, that’s what should matter. You prove yourself to her.” Because Sarah deserves this. “You’re clearly aware enough about this, so I’d like to think you’re not pressuring her, but like I said, if you have any worries, talk to her about them, make sure you guys are on the same page. It’ll be fine.” Charlotte’s giving Theo advice she wishes someone had given her two years ago.

“It was... familiar. We used to go out all the time, but it was just as friends and it was obvious things were normal. Now, it’s different, and... a little scary.” He worried if trying to change what they had, what was already great, would ruin their dynamic and ruin the friendship they’d had their entire lives. It’s where the word vomit comes in, and his nervousness is on display for Sarah’s older sister to see. “It is. It definitely is. She’s the only person I want to be with.” Theo nodded, her words making him feel a little more at ease. “Thanks Charlotte,” he lets out with a sigh, unsure if it’s one of relief or full of nerves. Naturally, because he’d thought the best of Sarah, he’d wanted the best for her too. Theo wondered if he was that for her, or if there was someone else out there more capable. “You’re a good sister, a really good one. I know... Things haven’t always been great between you guys, but I think she knows it too.”

She laughed, shaking her head. "Of course, you used Yelp," she grinned, nudging his shoulder. Her nerves were vanishing, slowly but surely. It was starting to feel just like a normal dinner with Theo, and she was glad. Sarah wasn't sure how she would deal with it if things ended up different. At his latter question, her smile turned sheepish, and she let out another laugh. "Yeah, probably not, to be honest. We both know how my tolerance is." It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't good, and if she was going to make it through the festival, she'd need all the sober headstart she could get.

"What do you mean? They have all the pictures of the food and stuff, I wanted to be sure," he retorted with a grin, nudging her. It would be a lie to say he wasn't nervous, but it slowly began to feel like it was just a regular time between the two, which was maybe why he'd fallen for her in the first place anyway. Things were easy for them without trying. "I started going to the gym again, I'll be ready to piggyback you home." His tolerance was good, but Theo hardly found himself drinking much these days maybe because he'd done it most nights for so many years. That and he liked to think he could have fun with just a few beers in him.

"So I'm assuming that will also be a no for tomato soup?" Over the last few weeks Alfie had become obsessed with dipping anything and everything, so with his five cheese grilled cheese she'd made him tomato soup. She had personally never been too picky of an eater, and her child was exactly like her. He'd eat rocks if you gave him a cup of ranch to soak them in. "At least he's not trying to drink it. You should have seen him last year, just soaking up his shirt and trying to drain it in his mouth the entire time." Boys. Dilara didn't know how she'd handle him as a teen when he was already so wild as a child. "Don't remind me. I might have to kidnap you until he moves out." Her heart warmed at his words though. She was glad Theo was comfortable being with them, and that he cared for her children like they were his family and not just a job.

"It's more like... the texture that I don't like, I guess? Tomato soup is pretty good. Most tomato-based things are good actually... Pasta sauce, ketchup..." Theo mused. He wasn't normally picky, and he'd pretty much anything put in front of him, but like most people, he had grown old enough to have preferences. "Sounds about right. Water is still better than dirt though. I used to take care of this one kid when I was younger, and he loved to make mud cakes. Not the chocolate ones, the one's with actual mud," he added with a laugh. He found it funny, mostly because he'd done the exact same growing up. "I'm not going anywhere anyway." He liked his job, liked taking care of kids and it was lucky that he got along well with Dee's and had grown to see them as more than just work. For now, he felt content with being there for them.

Where were you last night, June 27th? Can anyone confirm this?

"I was with Sarah last night, my girl-" Theo paused. "Well actually, I don't really know what we are, I mean we went on a date on the day of the festival, and we spend so much time together and I like her a lot, but then I also feel guilty because… I slept with my boss who I see every day, and it's just," he sighs, scratching the back of his head and realizing he'd gone wildly off-topic. "I was with Sarah. She can confirm it."

How do you know Azra Nadir?

"We live in the same town so… it's kind of hard not to know her." Theo tries to recall if there was anything more to their relationship. "I think we went on a date when we were in high school, but I picked Mama's and she said she was on a diet so we couldn't eat anything."

When and where did you last see her, or speak to her?

"I think I saw her around the festival?" Theo was mostly focused on Sarah at the time, but he was sure that Azra has been there too. "I didn't talk to her though."

Do you know anyone at all that she did not get along with?

Theo shook his head. He tended to see the best in people. "I don't think so, I mean, she's kind of… out there, but I don't know if anyone has any problems with her." Theo sighs, wishing he could provide something better. "I just moved back here a couple months ago… I haven't really paid attention to the drama."

Dee shook her head at him but smiled. It was cute. "Lettuce, tomato, bacon, mayo?" It didn't matter how simple a recipe was she would always felt the need to upgrade it. Tomatoes being one of her favorites in a ham and cheese sandwich specially if the tomato was just at the tip of chunkiness. "How have you boys been out here? He seems to be enjoying himself a bit much." She chuckled watching her baby pretend to dive into the five inches of water in the pool. "He got you good too?" Motioning towards his wet hair.

"Anything but tomatoes, I've never really liked them," he reveals sheepishly with a shrug. He was no stranger to luxury dining, and while some of it was good, Theo didn't ever develop refined tastebuds over the years, generally liking whatever was put in front of him. "It's getting hotter these days, the water's refreshing, even if Alf's jump could use some work." Today was feeling a bit sunnier than usual, so he couldn't even turn down Alfie's wishes, playing the lifeguard on duty and getting a bit wet in the process. "He's scrappier than he looks. In a couple years, we won't be able to hold him back," Theo joked with a grin, taking a water bottle into his hands.

"You're going to get me all wet!" Dilara screeched at Alfie as he jumped out of the kiddie pool in their backyard to give her a hug. "You're unbelievable, kid!" She couldn't help but laugh, loving that despite the chaos her babies were alright. "I'm making some sandwiches, you got any preference?" She turned towards Theo, placing down a tray of apple and orange juices.

Despite everything going on, Theo was trying to keep the mood light, ignore the fact that two people he'd known were now gone. He didn't want to burden the kids or make them think anything was up, so when Alfie had asked for some time in the water, he couldn't really say no. Watching him run up to Dee, Theo let out a laugh before approaching the pair. "Ham and cheese? It's a little embarrassing, I still have the tastebuds of a little kid sometimes," he remarked with a grin, slicking his hair that had gotten wet back.

Her curiosity piques even more at the mention that it’s about her sister, though she could probably have predicted that, because what else would Theo want to talk to her about. She smiles softly when he says they’ve been more than friends, but at the same time, there’s a pang in her heart that this is something she hadn’t known and that if she and Sarah were close as sisters should be, she’d already have known about this. However, she is happy things are going in that direction for them. Maybe Charlotte doesn’t know all of Sarah’s friends, but she knows Theo, who is her closest friend, someone who’s been in Sarah’s life for as long as Charlotte can remember, so Charlotte trusts him. “You were on a date. That’s adorable. Where did you go and how did it go?” she asks with a smile. “I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer for that, it’s really up to Sarah. You can take things slow, it can help you guys figure things out. But also you’ve known each other your whole life, so you should easily be able to talk about things.”

It always made him raise his eyebrows as a kid, wondering why Sarah and Charlotte didn’t really seem all that close. Theo knew he couldn’t relate to coming from a family that was as rich and different as his was, but still, it was enough to always stick in his head despite wanting to talk with Charlotte about her sister. He cares about Sarah a lot, and he wants things to work out between them. “I took her out to this place I found in Salem. I think it went well?” Theo replied, scratching the back of his neck and chuckling. It was hard for him to not feel like a high school kid with a crush when it came to talking about her. “Right... you’re right.  I just don’t want her to feel pressured about any of it, because, well... things are different for girls, right? And... I kind of have a reputation for getting around, in and out of Nightrest.” Hell, he’d slept with his boss only a few weeks ago.

She couldn't help but laugh as he pulled his chair around to her side, grinning as she hid her face in the menu. Sarah glanced up at him, smiling playfully as she shook her head. "Idiot," she mumbled, more than a small amount of affection in the word. At his question, she cocked her head, glancing at the menu. "Umm...probably this pasta one, here," she finally decided, pointing to it. "I like alfredo. Can't be bad, right?" She grinned.

Theo grins at the familiar quip out of Sarah, always finding it more endearing than insulting after all these years. He leans forward a bit, reading the menu along with her, slipping his hand under the table and taking her hand into his, smiling widely at his own gesture. "If it is, then those thirty Yelp reviews I read were very misleading," he joked, before glancing at her. "Alfredo it is." Sure enough, the waiter attending the two returned to their table, Theo placing the order along with a bottle of wine for them both. "We shouldn't drink too much, right? There'll probably be plenty at the festival anyway."

she felt a wave of different emotions brew inside her. it was nice to hear someone say that the life she chose was one that was meant for her. chris punched his shoulder, not knowing how else to express what she was feeling, before taking a bite out of her food. “ thank you. . ” her eyes lit up at the name drop. a teasing glint in her eyes as she looked at him, completely ignoring everything else he added. “ is it date? ”

The festival had been nice so far, a welcome change and a break to all the chaos that existed outside of it. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew things weren't okay, but everyone was having so much fun, so he didn't want to ruin the mood. "Of course," he added with a smile. The festival had brought back memories of LA, memories of being with people like Bella and Christina before moving back here. At the mention of a date, Theo scratched the back of his head, chuckling nervously. "We kind of… went out to dinner before this. So I guess this is part two?"

Sarah couldn't hold back a laugh. "Sounds good to me," she grinned, glancing back over at him as they spoke. "Yeah," she agreed, the butterflies in her stomach reaching a crescendo as she nodded. He was right—things were different now, very different, and she was terrified of screwing it up. She could feel herself blushing as she reached for the menu, glancing over it with a nervous gaze. "Exactly."

He didn't want it to feel awkward, but both of their nerves were making it harder for that to be the reality, Theo only glancing at his menu for a moment before looking back at Sarah. The restaurant was far too fancy for him to be picking up his chair and sitting right next to her, but Theo did it anyway, thinking in his mind that it felt right. "What are you getting? I can't read half the words on the menu anyway," he joked with a grin. It was usually how it always went, him following her lead because he firmly believed that she knew best.
