Growing up, Theo knew he was different from other girls his age, but didn't have the language to understand why. He was born and raised in Barton Point, Maine, alongside his older sister, two younger sisters, and younger brother. As a child, he didn't know what he wanted to be, so he became his eldest sister's shadow, following her around everywhere. Gladys was a wild child, but Theo became even more of one after getting in with Gladys' friend group. Though his sister, he began hanging out with older kids who weren't good influences on him; the worst offender was Ricardo Nunez. Ricardo introduced Theo to sex and alcohol at the ripe age of 15. Being a young, naïve teen, Theo was convinced that Ricardo was his soul mate. At the end of his sophomore year of high school, Theo found out that he was pregnant. Ricardo jumped ship the second he heard the phrase "you're the father," leaving Theo to raise the child alone.
Theo's parents weren't supportive of his decision to keep the baby, but agreed to help care for their grandson so Theo could finish high school. On December 12, 2005, Jericho Zacarías Gonzalez was born. While Theo loved his baby boy, the aftermath of having a child wasn't at all what he was expecting. Not only was he living in an unsupportive household, but he was also suffering post-partum depression. He began drinking heavily, ignoring his schoolwork, and ignoring his duties as a parent. Theo's parents saw that he had a problem and sent him to rehab in the summer of 2006. After returning home two months later, he came out as a lesbian and introduced his first girlfriend, Ashley Taylor, to his family. His relationship with Ashley didn’t last long, but his coming out created even more tension between him and his parents.
Once Theo was out of high school, he left his family home and moved in with his aunt, Andrea, in Bangor. Andrea welcomed Theo and Jericho with open arms, providing a roof, food, and childcare so Theo could find a job and get on his feet. After moving to Bangor, Theo jumped from one dead-end job to the next, had continuous flings which always ended in heartbreak, and went in and out of rehab multiple times. However, in 2012, after one of his cousins came out as a transgender woman, he finally figured out why he felt wrong his entire life: he was actually a man. It was a this point that he came out once more and started seeing a therapist. In 2014, he legally changed his name, began hormone replacement therapy, and enrolled at Husson University. He received his bachelor’s of science in paralegal studies in 2018 and got a job at an immigration law firm.
However, just when he started to get his life on track, his aunt passed away in April 2019, and Theo found himself with a bottle in hand once more. It was at this point that he reached out to his parents for the first time since 2007. Though his parents were shocked by his transition, they welcomed Theo and Jericho back into their home and took care of Jericho while Theo took his last trip to rehab. Weekly therapy sessions and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings have helped him stay on the right track. While his relationships with his son and parents still aren’t the best, Theo is doing everything in his power to fix that.
