REVISED FINAL FILM

Upon revision of the final film, it became apparent that areas of it were stronger than others - the strong areas being the smaller frames. These sections of the film abstracted the imagery further and lends itself better to the ‘Fine Art’ section of the brief.

The film (prior to projection) was therefore re-edited so that it contained a substantial amount more smaller frames. When projecting and re-filming the final film, I decided to keep the hair of the subject tied back as apposed to hanging loose like before so that the neutral expressions of the face could be seen clearer.

Overall, I am extremely happy with the final revised film and feel that it has been made even stronger than before.

BILL VIOLA

Bill Viola helped to inspire my final idea of exploring deep and arguably distressing messages along with the involvement of the human form as a means of presenting these ideas. Viola has produced a series of instillations that take over entire rooms through the use of projection.

The top image is more or less exactly how I would like my film to be projected in an exhibition setting, with the films playing in time with each other on adjacent walls.

I love his use of a pitch black room with the only light source being the projections/ screens.

This is the final background film that will be projected onto the moving subject. The quality of this piece has been lowered to decrease file size so is slightly pixilated but the content is still clear.

My own footage has been interspersed with found imagery (all of which has been referenced in the bibliography below) and various filters have been added to adjust the aesthetics of the work as well as visually tying it all together.

FIONA BANNER PRESENTATION.

Many of Banners works dominate the whole of the space in which they are exhibited. The result of this holds a great deal of power and almost forces the audience to be consumed by the work and consider its meaning. I want to channel this through the way that my film would ideally be exhibited - having it projected onto each wall of a unlit, square room.

The film would be set on a timer, split at four intervals. The viewers would be guided to the centre of the room as the viewing point. The film would begin to play on one wall, then a quarter of the way through it would begin to play on a second wall (staying in time with the first projection) and so on until all four walls have the film projected onto them at the same time. This is powerful. It forces the viewer to be both literally and metaphorically consumed by the piece - having it completely surround them.

This strongly channels Banner’s confrontational aspects of her practice.

LUCAS DAVIDSON PRESENTATION.

I have taken inspiration from installation artist Lucas Davidson. Many of Davidson’s works are whole room film/videography installations that use elements of projection and interesting lighting to create atmospheric experiences that challenge audiences moods and opinions.

I want to use this idea of projection within my work - taking film presentation back to its roots as well as creating not just an artistic viewing, but an experience through my presentation technique.

Elènne - Out of phase

This is the chosen track for the short film. I wanted to keep the music new and current with a futuristic feel. I have found that this piece does not have too many rises or falls and no true climax that could be off putting to the imagery. The piece has a moody, pained tone to it which ties in perfectly with the challenging subject matters of environmental destruction, animal exploitation, ‘never enough’ and poverty.

ADDING EFFECTS AND FILTERS.

As much of the imagery is from different sources, therefore with varying qualities and colourations, I have used a variety of editing effects to link/ tie together the work.

The first images shows a screen shot of the footage with the effect ‘Blue Moon’ applied. I like the effect that this filter achieves - its blue/green tones compliment the sombre subject matter and dulls out any harsh orangey tones.

The second image shows a screen shot of the footage once a faded film effect has been applied at 70% and a noise grain effect at 10% on top of the existing ‘Blue Moon’ filter. These effects soften the image, blurring it slightly. When projected on a larger scale, these effects will also hopefully distort the imagery slightly.

Final film development #1

This is the collective of edited video clips that have been sourced from YouTube videos to help to broaden the perspective of the subject matter and video in general.

This footage will be interspersed with my own and edited to provide an element of continuity. This footage will then be projected onto a moving subject and therefore act as a ‘background’ to the piece. The subject will appear to be lacking in emotion, moving in soft, fluid ways that mirror the sombre tone of the ideas being explored in the background film. By the film being projected onto a subjected and therefore becoming a film within a film, it will appear disrupted and broken.

I want to intentionally try to draw the audiences attention away from the imagery of the film, creating a distraction with a placid, emotionless figure in the foreground. This mirrors the media and society today. The refusal to confront these huge, global issues - putting on a front to hide them and draw the attention of the public eye away from them with empty distractions.

THOUGHTS ON CONCEPT #2

Overall I think that this concept is very effective and has a lot of potential to explore a great deal of emotion and difficult human issues that connect us all. There is a clear, strong, visual link with the work of chosen artist Fiona Banner in her use of text as an art form and the deep issues that she challenges in her pieces.

Taking all of this into account along with the test imagery, I have decided that I will be taking the first idea forward as I feel that it is more powerful and will make for a more engaging, fine art film.

Short film test piece #3 concept #2

With this test piece I used a coloured overlay on a black and white film. The original film was copied and over-layed onto the original and a slightly different timing. The opacity of the copy on top was reduced to produce this delayed, double vision effect which is reminiscent of a 3D film.

The music is subtle and current with a relaxing feel. I love the effect that has been achieve through this editing and is definitely something I want to explore more within my final film. I think the effects work well with the subject matter and make the imagery more interesting and engaging. I think the music is slightly distracting and draws the attention away from the imagery slightly so maybe a quieter, more classical tone would be better suited to the piece.

Short film tester piece #2 for concept #2

For this test piece I have experimented with an aged, romantic feel. I have achieved this by colouring it with a sepia-like filter to mimic an old style film. To compliment this, a classical piano piece has been added that heightens the emotion of the work and is not too distracting as to draw attention away from from the subject matter.

I think that although this editing technique and music choice does work well with the subject matter, I don’t feel that it is engaging or interesting enough for the viewer.

Short film tester piece #2 for concept #2

This piece shows the same footage as concept #1 but with changes to the colour/ visual effects and music. For this test piece I have increased the saturation of colour to it’s full capacity and added the same rasterising overlay as the previous video that distorts and brightens the colour further. This combination of visual effects give the piece a futuristic feel that proves to be quite engaging. The music used is more uptempo and computerised, giving the film a more lighthearted feel. I don’t think this combination of vivid colouration and uplifting music works well with the imagery itself and the message that the work is trying to convey - it becomes contradictory and very distracting.

BILL VIOLA

When looking further into fine art performance artists, Bill Viola’s practice caught my eye and proved to be very relevant to what I am trying to achieve. He uses people in isolated conditions that are being put through different experiences - be that having water poured onto them in his piece ‘Acceptance’ or performing fluid movements in front of a wall of fire in his piece ‘Fire Woman’.

Short film tester piece #1 for concept #2

For this first test piece I have taken footage of myself drawing on my skin with an eyeliner pencil. With the text I am touching on ideas of personal relationships and the journey in which that takes. I decided to have the film in black and white as the avoids distraction and allows the viewer to focus on the text. The music in the background has had a muffled effect added to it - yet again to minimise distraction from the messages being conveyed but at the same time, making the piece more engaging.

initial concept #2 plan:

The participants will write on various parts of their bodies, describing a journey, story, emotion or anything personal to them that relates to ‘connections’. There will also be inserts or footage of them wrapping black tape around themselves - restricting, confining, connecting the pieces.

Some of the imagery will be in black and white, others in colour depending on what best suits the scene. There will be the odd shot of the outside world that relates to the things being written and to also make it a more exciting and thought provoking piece.

Music needs to be tested - most likely orchestral.
