Explanation for Mariyah/Igor as “Merrymaker”:

- Mari used to work for scarecrow as a “Igor” (they’ll probably work for him in the future lol)

- when making a redesign for their “leaving the nest” ark I was going for a plague doctor motif. when I learned of Merrymaker, a plague doctor themed character from actual DC comics, I loved his name so much I decided to STEAL IT

- so yeah think of Mari as a sort of AU where OG merrymaker doesn’t exist :)

- the murderbot diaries (sci-fi with some of the most earnest and human character writing I’ve read. Funny and honest narration from MC. Explores motifs of bodily autonomy and the lack thereof, humanity/what makes a person. Neurodivergent-coded MC, lots of complex platonic relationships, and an interesting sci fi setting. The audiobook on audible is great as well.)

- salt grows heavy (horror-esc, gory, and unique. Short but difficult, be prepared to look up a bunch of words. Tender interactions between MCs in a horrific world. Motifs of abuse, power, gender, and bodily autonomy. Warning for blood and gore, violence, mentioned sexual abuse)

- what moves the dead (short horror-thriller. Retelling of the fall of the House of Usher. mushrooms, a decrepit manor, creepy rabbits, walking corpses, and a MC who makes fairly reasonable decisions. Spoiler alert: the horse lives)

- hazelthorn and don’t let the forest in (YA nature body horror. Queer. Neurodivergent characters. The settings feel like characters in their own right. Brambles, old gardens, twisting aspens, ancient oak trees, and blooming violets. It has ART inside, which is super cool. Hazelthorn motifs: bodily autonomy, medical malpractice, memory, identity, nature. Don’t let the forest in motifs: storytelling, grief, memory, nature, bodily…. Something. DLTFI has an explicitly ace character and amazing monsters. Warnings: body horror, plants, blood, moderate (?) violence. Hazelthorn specific warnings: medical malpractice, violation of bodily autonomy. DLTFI: MC experiences body horror of the infection (?) kind, eating disorders, kinda open-ended. Both books have more detailed trigger warnings at start.)

- currently reading a house with good bones and it’s good as well. (Southern gothic horror. Bugs.)
