Rapunzel Dress Tutorial: Part One - Corset
Hey guys! I know that this is really late, but I figured better late than never right? When I made this dress, I only had about 2 months of sewing experience, so my techniques are rather simple and I did use a pattern for the corset. So let’s begin, shall we?
Here’s what you will need:
Butterick Pattern B5935
1 yard fabric for sleeves and inner front panel
1 yard fabric for outer corset
1.5 yards fabric for lining of corset
3 yards muslin fabric (this is optional - I made a practice corset before the real thing)
Approx. 5 yards piping 1/2″ approx.
Lace
Pink satin ribbon 3/8″ X 21′
2 yards featherlite boning
Water soluble OR disappearing ink marker pen

Fabric
The fabric I bought was designed by and used in another person’s cosplay, Amee Major Steinberger. Her tutorial helped me through making my dress. You can find her fabric here.
For both the patterned and solid parts of the corset, I purchased 1 yard (though I would suggest getting more than a yard to leave room for any mistakes) for each of the organic cotton sateen. If you do not wish to purchase the fabric from the Spoonflower site, you can always look for similar fabric in stores like Joanns.
Pattern
Next, I’ll show you the pattern I used and explain how I altered the pattern some.
I used pattern C, but you could use any of these patterns. With Rapunzels dress, there is a sweetheart neckline. What I did to create this was drawing a rough sketch of what I wanted on the pattern and cut it out in the pattern. I also connected the straps rather than have ribbon connecting the front to the back. This was rather simple as all I had to do was connect each edge by leaving some extra fabric. Once I had the appropriate length, I just sewed the top part together.
