Cultured Tahitian Pearls

Tahitian pearls are primarily cultivated around the islands of French Polynesia, around Tahiti. Tahitian pearls are French Polynesia’s biggest source of export revenue and its second biggest economic contributor after tourism. Millions of dollars are generated annually from exported Tahitian pearls, which are counted among the world’s unique luxury items. Tahitian pearls have to reach a high standard before export is allowed.

Cultured in the large black lip oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) the pearls take on the stunning colours from the osyters lip, ranging from silver through to dark black, but often with various strong undertones and overtones of green, pink, blue, silver and yellow. 

Nucleated with a 8mm or larger mother of pearl bead these pearls can again be produced in large sizes, and can acheive perfectly round shapes, although  oval, drop and baroque shapes are often seen, and can beautifully set into jewellery.
