Tash Style Photography
THE OBSESSION I had such an obsession for taking photos. I would snap all day if I could! Family and friends started commenting on my images and saying they were great. My partner Jesse always told me I had talent, he has been a great supporter. Once I bought my first DSLR camera it all just happened from there! Social media has really progressed it all so quickly.
THE STYLE I have found my style to have slowly changed as I have progressed, it can be really hard to know what type of photography you enjoy and are good at. As I started photographing fashion I found that I really loved this, I loved how my images would look and felt so excited to show my clients. Also having such an interest in fashion has really pointed me in this direction. Fashion is a huge part of my everyday life so it made sense that this is what I enjoy taking pictures of. I am a lover of clean, monochrome colors and you can see a lot of this through my work.
SMALL BUSINESS FOCUSED My services for Small Business include Product shoots (fashion, accessories etc) on location, event photography, interiors (for designers or businesses), portrait shots, beauty products/events, website images; I also do a bit of food photography, studio shoots (with hired studio)
Editing of your own images (some clients take great photos, they just need a bit of tweaking) so I offer an editing service on your own photos
THE INSTAGRAM EFFECT I most certainly have! A lot of the thanks is to The Perth Collective (so thanks Nikki!) I have met some amazing women that are my clients and now also friends through the TPC network. I have also found that I have a lot of businesses getting in contact with me through Instagram, commenting on how much they like the images, so that is always very nice to hear. Since working at fashion events, I find that a lot of contacts will use the images on their page/blog and in turn I get more traffic and emails of enquiry.
Instagram has been a huge networking platform for me, to which I have met a lot if not most of my clients through.
SELF TAUGHT I am mainly self taught upto now. I have started an online course on photography though open colleges, it’s not so much about being able to class myself as a “photographer” but more so for the technical aspects of it, learning how a DSLR camera works, light composition, depth of field and all those elements are really important. So I feel to become better at what I do and to grow, I need to know these things. I have learnt so much so far and should be finished in the next few months!
MY OTHER ROLE My other life! I also work for an Insurance Broker in Subiaco as a Workplace Risk consultant. I have been in this Industry (Workers compensation) for 8 years. It is a very social role with a lot of networking. It has definitely taught me professionalism which has carried on through to my photography. So at the moment juggling full time work and my photography, and while I don’t have kids yet I think it’s not so bad!
“Because she competes with no one, no one can
compete with her."
THAT MOMENT I would have to say my very first fashion shoot, which was with Kate from Lock & Key clothing. I was so nervous and wasn’t sure how the images would turn out. They ended up being great and we got reposted on a few sites, I got several jobs out of that shoot. Kate was happy with the images and posted these on her blog to which Kate also mentioned she had a lot of traffic through her blog on that post. It really gave me that confidence I needed.
BALANCE Trying to balance photography, my 9-5 job plus my own time to spend with family and friends. I found initially I was running myself into the ground trying to cram it all in but now I space things out as evenly as I can so I don’t go crazy and have time to fit it all in. Some weeks are busier than others and I will still try and be as flexible as I can, it’s all still a huge learning curve.
INSPIRATION This might seem silly, when I first started a few ladies approached me at an event, having seen my work in Instagram. Their kind words were so uplifting for me and they had also thought I had been in the fashion business for some time. I wasn’t really confident at that point so this really was such a great moment for me. My own little celebrity moment (ha ha!).
THE MOST CHALLENGING SHOOT TO DATE My shoot with Nikki in City Beach for the Salted launch. What a day! Gusty winds and rain, we did pretty well considering! Poor Nikki and her windswept hair, I must say, from the state of the weather that day we got some great pics! I’ll always remember running up those HUGE steps in the rain carrying our stuff and laughing :)
Worrying too much about others in your profession is just a distraction, there is room for all of us to be successful!
MY DAILY SOURCE OF INSPIRATION I would have to say my partner, Jesse. He is such a hardworking, loyal man. He has really shown me that you have to work for what you want and when you do it well, the rest follows!
Also the lovely ladies I have met through TPC – Kate from Lock & Key, Natalie from ilyas Honey, Elisa from Cinque Candle Co, Aleisha from The Hunted Homewares, Corrine from Jade made Arts, Aimee from The Weekend Edit and Anni from Heal my guts. These ladies have become such great friends, we share our ups and downs. Their businesses have flourished and they all manage to juggle their business as well as kids, life, planning weddings etc. Such inspirational woman and I am very grateful to have them in my life. I feel I wouldn’t be as confident without them!
WHAT I HAVE LEARNT You just have to take that first step and start! It’s a daunting thought at times, but platforms like The Perth Collective make it so much easier than it would have been before social media. Use these to get networking, talking to like mined people and get your foot in the door! I know for myself it grew pretty quickly since I was introduced to TPC and I haven't looked back! I did A LOT of research into photography and read a lot of books before I took the leap. You can’t plan enough, and if you are really passionate about it you'll make it happen – start small, build your way. I think you have to be realistic with it too, and worse case scenario if it doesn’t work out – at least you gave it a go!
THE GROWING VISION My dream would be to have my own studio with a few creatives working alongside me. I hope that one day I will make this a reality. If I could do this full time that would be a bonus!
