What to learn from Nirbhaya incident
The Delhi nirbhaya case was a horrid and appalling incident that it took the nation into a shock. I have always wanted to write on all discussions on the case but never did. Now with the release of the documentary by BBC, Indias daughter I have finally decided to write. There has been enough hype on this case. There have been many such disappointing events like the terror attacks or the BSF jawans being murdered on a regular basis in Kashmir border but this case is glamourized over all of them. This case has been caught by the youth of the country as a topic because the revolutionary millennials have this as the perfect lever against Indian culture and government. Though there are valid arguments against the culture in its derogatory prejudice against women or the government in their safety enforcement, making statements for the sake of an argument doesn’t help in solving the real problem in the country.
The millennial generation has been identified both civic minded as well as generation ME and every person wants to express views on everything happening around hoping he will change the society to the best ideology of liberalism. That is why the young generation today, spends so much time on the internet browsing trending topics, which is indirectly targeted by the social media vendors. This reminds me that an opinion is like an asshole and everyone has one. When the nirbhaya documentary release ban drama happened there were so many one day feminists all over the internet and most of them had only one agenda to explain, cruel and gruesome ways of killing the rapists. The irony of this puts us at par with the rapist, since an unthinkable cruel act such as this one can neither be dealt with atrocity nor absolution but with a just order by the court decided based on the Indian Penal code. All those people whose facebook statuses say that hanging these criminals is not enough, I am sorry to say but civilized people shouldn’t think so barbarically because the psychopath who committed the crime isn’t worried about his death penalty but rather hasn’t had even a bit of a change in his mind set and even worse punishments it may not change. Though one can argue that fear of public punishments will keep rapists from committing the crime we still aren’t targeting the root of the problem, the mind-set of the people, making them understand not that rape is a capital punishment but why is it a capital punishment. This should be done by education and moral education should notched up in schools and by this I am not talking about morals for girls on dressing but morals on sex for guys. Sex education shouldn’t be just handled as a science class explaining reproduction, which is what taught in most Indian schools if you’re lucky, but with morals on trying to take advantage of a girl which should remove even the thought of rape from the minds.
The convict’s lawyers made such irrational statements which make me wonder that if I can practice law as a hobby. Equality in genders is a real thing which the lawyers are yet to comprehend. If we do not realize this then our nation as the world’s third largest economy with so many big accomplishments on science and technology will amount to nothing. We will be a barbaric country where it is not safe for women to even exist. But equality in some cases is in jeopardy. An independent working woman, I know, contends that it is her right to be safe and happy anywhere she goes in the night but the same woman refuses to work at night at office because she is a woman and she cannot work at night. Many women are slipped out of late hours of office work on the same lines. I think that both chivalry and male chauvinism are two sides of the same coin and you can’t have one without the other. A true feminist sticks to words and has reasoned statement. All the internet cacophony on the nirbhaya case in way brought into light the short comings in woman safety in the nation but is not a basement for blatant statements that India is the worst country for a girl to live and so many pseudo feminist claims. This is a very horrific incident and the entire country is not to be blamed for this. All this hatred is getting us nowhere. Jew extermination was because of one man and all the Germans shouldn’t be blamed. It is not only because you’re a girl you are in various perils but because our country is still developing there are a few dark areas in safety where extra care has to be taken. Even a person getting mugged is not to be blamed for it, but it is common ideology that he should have taken precaution. The brave girl nirbhaya has served as awakening call to the country and It is not the girls responsibility for a rape but in the victim’s perspective she has gone through a very horrific incident. Though the law is punishing the convicts but what happened to the girl cannot be reversed. There shall come a day when India’s crime rates shall go down and proactive safety consideration is not necessary but till them I implore to all women to consider their safety very seriously, and it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go out in the night or wear party dresses but a bit of discretion and common sense in the places you go and being proactive shall go a long way in ensuring your safety. As prime minister said, development is a peoples movement and only with entire populations efforts it shall be successful. With a collective effort we should change the current situation of thinking.
The banning of the documentary without a clear reason was wrong but sincerely all the drama around it isn’t helping us either. All the social media drama isn’t helping anyone either. This case should help in learning for guys on how to respect a woman and for a woman to be alert at situations which may compromise her safety, rather than all the hate discussions and blaming India for everything. This should also make our political leaders to give better thrust to woman safety rather than making blunt statements on woman or sympathising.
