It’s been a year, but I remember it as if it was yesterday. I remember what you were wearing, although that’s not quite the case for me. I was probably paying more attention to you than I was to myself. It was raining that afternoon. It was one of those rare times when you picked me up from work. When you rolled up in front of our building, the rain had dissipated into a drizzle. What a relief. I hurriedly got inside your car.
Hi. A smile. A kiss.
We were going to have dinner. The place wasn’t too far from my office but it was a little traffic because of the rain. Parking wasn’t that easy either. We enjoyed it though. We spent the lull time listening to good songs. We went around the mall, looking for a place for dinner. We decided on a familiar burger joint, the same one we had near school. It was just like college all over again. We revelled in good conversation in between bites of the burgers. I told you again that I was always afraid of one-on-ones because of the awkward silences that we might have. My introversion was up to that extent that even being on a date with my long-term boyfriend daunted me. You just laughed because that fear never came to fruition.
You paid that day, which was a surprise considering how stingy you were. Another rare occurrence. I got us dessert afterwards. We shared a sundae. Hand in hand, we strolled around the mall, no direction really. We were simply enjoying our time together. Soon enough, it was nearing our curfew. Time to go home. I still had work tomorrow after all and your mom would be looking for you already. We got to the parking lot and got in the car. I knew it was the last opportunity have some privacy with you that night. We weren’t really alone together these days. We snuck a kiss before you started the engine. I thought that was nice.
I liked the road home. We laughed a lot. I was sleepy but you wanted me to pay attention to you. It was sweet. When you pulled up to our house, we shared another kiss.
I love you. See you.
If I could think of our worst day, there’d be too many choices. This was one of our best. No fights. No complications. Only good times.
I didn’t know that it would be our last good day.
I didn’t know it, but I wasn’t going to see you after that. I noticed that you became cold after that day. Something had changed. I asked you why, you said it was nothing. I was right to call it out. Things turned from bad to worst and never got better after that.
2 days later we broke up.
I wonder, did you know? It went all too well. That was unlike us. We always had a way of fucking things up. We had tendency of turning a nice, normal day into an absolute nightmare. But on that day, we were perfectly good.
Did you know that that was going to be the last?
The person that embraced me with so much sincerity and tenderness that day was already preparing to let me go. While I dreamed up the future, you already had a nightmare written up in mind, didn’t you?
You made me believe that it was a good day, but you already knew that it was going to be our last good day, didn’t you?
Maybe I’d like to believe that you did so that I could spend my days believing that you don’t resent me. Maybe it would be better to think it happened that way so that I could live knowing you did it for the best; that you left me the way you did because you love me and not because you despise me.
I should hate you. I really should. That last good day in no way encompasses what our relationship was. Our relationship was bad. It was toxic. The good days were rare. I can probably count the days we didn’t suffer through any fights with my fingers. I should hate you for that. I hate me for that.
But last year, I came to a point in my life wherein I realized that hate is a waste of time and breath and tears. I have no space in my heart for resentment. Not for you. Not for myself. Maybe you will realize the same kind of forgiveness and acceptance about me someday. I don’t expect you to though. You blocked me, after all. It’s pretty clear that you don’t want anything to do with me. I’d be lying if I told you that that didn’t make me sad. I don’t expect anything from you, but I look at us and I see a tragedy. I don’t have the same feelings for you, but it hurts to see it that way. It hurts that we are strangers to each other. It hurts that you’ve erased me from your life. I’ve accepted everything that happened to us and I can live with that, destruction, delusion, depression, and all. I can accept that all of it happened. I don’t think you want the same for yourself. I think you would rather live without any evidence of me. Maybe it would be better for you to pretend like I never existed. But the thing is, I don’t think you can be fully rid of someone you truly cared about. And this tells me that you didn’t really care about me. Despite all those years that we spent together, you could dispose of me so easily. Like I was nothing to you at all. I think that hurts the most.
I remember our last good day. Even if you chose to forget, I remember. I’ll remember. It’s one of the few things worth remembering about us. Most of the other memories are shards of glass geared to make me bleed whenever I touch them. Regardless, I still have fond memories of you. I’m not sure if you have fond memories of me. Back then I could only remember you for the bad things, but forgiveness has taught me otherwise. The other night I found myself crying so much the way I haven’t for a long time now. When I woke up, my eyes were swollen. I thought that was a thing of the past. I don’t really know what exactly brought on those tears, but I know it was because I remembered you. Maybe it’s my punishment to still have these memories with me, but I do have them. Sometimes they hurt and sometimes they’re heavy, but they’re there.
I wrote you a letter months ago. I wanted you to know that I was sorry and that I was thankful. I don’t know if you ever read that. Until now, I haven’t received a response. It’s been too long to expect one. Maybe all I really have left of you is our last good day. And no, I don’t think that will ever be good enough, but it’s something I have to live with.
If the universe somehow lets us meet again, just one more time, I’d tell you that I’m sorry. I’d tell you I forgive you. I’d tell you that I no longer resent you. I’d tell you that I want you to be happy, so much happier than you were when you were with me. I know that after that meeting, I’d still have a lot to say, but sometimes we only get to say what we need to and not everything we want to. I hope that I could at least have the chance to tell you what I need to. Maybe someday.
I keep telling myself that this is the last time I’m writing about you, but that never happens. We have too much history between us for me to write it all down completely. I wonder when the day will come when I’ve finally ran out of things to write about you. This chapter has not yet come to pass. I’ve been telling the same story again and again and again and I pray that someday soon I’ll be writing a new one. Until then, I’m still looking for a proper ending to this one.
