Klaus Baudelaire, the middle child, and the only boy, liked to examine creatures in tide-pools. Klaus was a little older than twelve and wore glasses, which made him look intelligent. He was intelligent. The Baudelaire parents has an enormous library in their mansion, a room filled with thousands of books on nearly every subject. Being only twelve, Klaus of course had not read all of the books in the Baudelaire library, but he had read a great many of them and had retained a lot of the information from his readings.

Violet Baudelaire, the eldest, liked to skip rocks. Like most fourteen-year-olds, she was right-handed, so the rocks skipped farther across the murky water when Violet used her right hand than when she used her left. As she skipped rocks, she was looking out at the horizon and thinking about an invention she wanted to build. Anyone who knew Violet well could tell that she was thinking hard, because her long hair was tied up in a ribbon to keep it out of her eyes.

This particular day was gray and cloudy, which didn’t bother the Baudelaire youngsters one bit. When it was hot and sunny, Briny Beach was crowded with tourists and it was impossible to find a place to lay one’s blanket. On gray and cloudy days, the Baudelaires had the beach to themselves to do what they liked.

Their misfortune began one day at Briny Beach. The three Baudelaire children lived with their parents in an enormous mansion at the heart of a dirty and busy city, and occasionally their parents gave them permission to take a rickety trolley - the word “rickety,” you probably know, here means “unsteady” or “likely to collapse” - alone to the seashore, where they would spend the day as a sort of vacation as long as they were home for dinner.

A Safe Place

Dear Fellow Volunteers,

Recently I read a disheartening post that attempted to alienate new fans of “A Series of Unfortunate Events”. Rather than giving the original post any more attention, I'd like to share my thoughts on the matter separately.

I read all the books and companion novels when I was a child, and a few years ago when I found out about “All The Wrong Questions” (the prequel book series), I read that too. However, my first introduction to ASOUE was with the 2004 movie. Everyone has to start somewhere, and it just so happens that many fans have started very recently with the Netflix series. I never thought that, after the first attempt, the Baudelaires would ever be brought to screen again - yet here we are, and I’m so glad for it. I used to live in a world where I had no one to share my love for those books, but because of modern media that’s not the case anymore.

“A Series of Unfortunate Events” is about three siblings who, in the face of countless obstacles, have managed to not only survive, but also solve mysteries, learn how to function in the adult world, and stand together as a family in times of crisis. Beyond that, it’s about surviving childhood abuse. As a victim of emotional abuse and gaslighting as a child, ASOUE was (and still is) a safe haven for me, because the Baudelaires were the only “peers” in my life who could remotely understand what I was going through. Through the wonders of the internet, I’ve now met many others with similar experiences who have also found solace in the woes of the Baudelaire orphans.

It is so important that we treat each other with kindness and understanding, because so many of us have suffered at the hands of ignorant adults. I want everyone in this community to know that I’m glad you’re here. You’ve found a safe place, whether you’ve loved these silly dark books since the beginning, or just watched the Netflix series yesterday.

I love your ATWQ cosplays! I just finished the main series two days ago (currently I'm reading File Under), and I have a LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT IT (and sadly nobody to talk to about it because nobody I know has read them). I’m so glad to hear you liked our ATWQ cosplays. We had a great time taking those photos! Unfortunately my previous counterpart has moved on to other things now, however I am planning on taking some new photos based on the series. I’ve found a couple of locations that remind me of Stain’d-by-the-Sea and I can’t wait to use them.
