The Rant: Drake- Nothing Was the Same

While the whole world is going crazy over Drake's new album, I'm going Ape Shit!

Why does Drake's emotions have me sitting so close to the speakers?

I guess it's the fact that 40 produced one hell of a drug, and Drake's lyrics, for some people, hit so close to home, that I started to feel like the girl he was talking about on track 14, Come Thru. I might have even gotten dressed like that was a legit invitation.

Mommy says, "never make funny faces or you might get stuck that way", but my face has been screwed from Tuscan Leather to All me feat. Big Sean & 2 Chainz (because I got the deluxe edition), and I could careless if it stays this way, because once I blame NWTS you should understand the genius level that Drake's producer, 40, put in those beats is liable to have your whole body doing things you can only do when this album is on.

Rap Radar's, Elliott Wilson, recently interviewed Drake for his Crwn Series, and I got the privilege to listen in on the conversation. Drake touched on double standards in the industry, his ability to laugh at himself, and the epic, Control, verse that Kendrick Lamar addressed him in. My favorite part of the interview was when he spoke about his mother's reaction to the song, Too Much feat. Sampha. I don't want to spoil to much just be sure to tune into the Crwn premiere Sept. 25 on Pitchfork. I've included some pics from the Crwn interview below to hold you over!

The Rant: Johnathan A. Ferrel

This Rant is inspired by the senseless killing of former, Florida A&M football player, Jonathan A. Ferrel. Briefly, Jonathan A. Ferrel, a new resident of North Carolina,was involved in a car wreck on Saturday, September, 14 2013. He ran to a nearby house for help, the owner denied and called the cops, reporting it as a breaking and entering. According to USA Today, Ferrel ran towards the officers, they tased him, he continued to run, and Randall Kerrick fired several shots, killing Ferrel at the scene of the crime.

I'm just trying to figure out,when did things get this bad? Is this going to be another killing that gets swept under the rug? Why did this happen? Was it really necessary for them to shoot him? What are they not telling us?

So many questions are going through my head. Overall,I'm appalled, disgusted, hurt, and some.How was it possible that you shoot someone several times, after using a taser? Is it about doing what's right, or making it look like your doing what's right?

I think its safe to say that I'm losing faith in the justice system. My condolences go out to the family of Johnathan A. Ferrel. Hopefully, this is another heard scream for change.

Remember why you started this shit.

The Trayvon Martin case left a very sick taste in a lot of our mouths after hearing the not guilty verdict. Zimmerman walks free while we as a nation believe that justice wasn’t served. Protest gathering have been honored all over NY and I attended the one in Union Square.

Through my eyes I hope I can present to y’all real life. Today the stories I heard were so inspiring. It was like everyone out there felt that verdict in they soul. It wasn’t hate in the air. It was frustration. Disappointment. Disgust. Optimism. Hope. Peace. I was surrounded by black men who didn’t know how to feel, other oppressed races who wanted to put an end to this never ending cycle.

What riddle are we suppose to make up to explain this to our children? “Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t and if you black the justice system never has your back".

I believe that now is the time for change, the same people that built this countries foundation is losing faith in it, and creating a world built on burdens from history. The same burdens that we carry so strongly on our backs are just being carried down to generations. Hopefully something positive comes from this. My faith is with a higher being, and I truely believe justice will be served. until then, I guess we will never know what it means to truly be free.

King Holiday: Comes to Afro Punk's "Battle of the Bands" Bearing Gifts

Last Night I attended Afro Punk's, Battle of the Bands, and received the best gift this Brooklyn Band, King Holiday, could give a crowd of hungry listeners packed inside of the Free Candy venue; The gift of good music. King Holiday as a band is amazing, they owned the stage with saxophones, trumpets, a piano, drums, and bullhorn, to be exact. The lead singer served us some vocals that were eclectic, nostalgic and down right mind blowing.

They performed a song called Dub of Love, which immediately made me feel so dirty, and so good at the same time. The lead singer has the voice of a modern day Prince but the look of a 2013 Basquiat, he served us some vocals that were eclectic, nostalgic and down right mind blowing. I took the video for the song "dub of love" off their youtube Channel, ThisisKingHoliday, check it out.

FYI, If your not doing anything August 24-25th stop by Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn to enjoy this years Afro Punk Fest, where Im pretty sure you will catch more of King Holiday.

XXL Magazine released the freshman class cover for 2013 today. The cover featured some of our favorites artists, Joey Badass, Ab-soul, SchoolBoy Q, Dizzy Wright, Trinidad James, just to name a few, along with the question: Best Ever?

Every year, for the 6 years that XXL Magazine has been dong the Freshman Class Covers there have been some debates about who really deserved to be on the cover. Could this really be the Best Ever Freshman Class cover? Previous years featured artist like Kendrick Lamar, Machine Gun Kelly, Iggy Azalea, Ace Hood, B.I.G Krit, all very good artist but I think this cover is giving the past covers a run for their money. This is the Best Year ever for music and XXL Mag did a great job at capturing the essence of that!
