Happy (Late) Anniversary to the anime that literally changed my life <3 Gonna be re watching it today, haven't seen it in about 2 years ^^
Iâve spent some time lately trying to figure out why, exactly, it always rings false to me when people call Viktor a âplayboy.â And I think I figured it out:
Viktor Nikiforov believes in love.
Viktor is definitely presented as a playboy. Thatâs not the problem: he has millions of male and female fans who literally swoon over him, heâs noted for being âfree with his charms,â is called âthe worldâs hottest bachelor,â and his initial behavior with Yuuri is very forward, physical, and flirtatious. Even seven episodes of character growth in, his initial reaction to comfort Yuuri is kissing him.
So itâs not that Viktor doesnât have the groundwork laid for this interpretation.
Most âplayboyâ archetypes fall into this pattern of having been hurt in the pat by someoneâa parent, a friend, usually a former loverâand they are now jaded and no longer believe in love. The love interest is there to facilitate the playboyâs growth by being warm and loving and caring and everything the playboy needs and convince them that love doesnât have to hurt. The playboyâs character arc takes them through this long trial in which their love interest is used as free emotional labor and an emotional punching bag while the playboy works out his personal issues.
While we have basically no backstory on Viktor, he doesnât appear to have been hurt like this in the past. Heâs just a sad, lonely man with major depressive disorder and no friends or family, apparently. Which, as my brother pointed out when I made this argument to him, doesnât sound very much like a playboy.
As soon as he meets Yuuri at the banquet and realizes, âI could fall in love with this man,â he chases it with everything he has. He already knows how much he wants and needs love and how much good it could do him. Heâs not running away from affection, heâs running full-tilt toward it.
Which neatly averts any âusing Yuuri as an emotional punching bag,â and for that I will be forever grateful.
My grandfather always used to say that he chased my grandmother until she caught him. Episode 10 will forever make me think of that phrase, âcause episodes 1-9 is a whole lot of Victor chasing, but episode 10 is where Yuuri catches him.
I have thoughts on this as well. I just want to point out that we are left with a huge number of degrees of freedom for how we view Victor simply because he has very little backstory given (at the moment).
But Victor-as-playboy is an interpretation that is given to us by Minako when she is watching Victor skate. At this point, Minako hasnât actually met Victor. Sheâs basing her view of Victor-as-playboy on publicly available facts: * he has millions of female fans * he is flirty in public (for instance, Victor winking at the camera)
But we know that Victor is a performer. He instructs both Yuuri and Yuri how to perform, andâat least as far as coaching goes; his personal feelings are likely a different matterâis 100% fine with Yuuri performing Eros by thinking about katsudon.
We also know, canonically, that Minako is wrong about Victorâs motivations. Minako tells Yuuri in episode 2 that she thinks Victor is using coaching as an excuse to figure out what he wants to do next.
This image of playboy is projected onto Victor by people who donât know him.
These two projections as to Victorâs internal state are brilliant narrative strokes by Kubo, because they allows us (as viewers) to construct an explanation for behavior that makes absolutely no sense without Episode 10. Why is Victor flirting with this guy he barely knows? Why did he drop everything to come coach him?
The narrative of Episodes 1-4 is explicitly built to lie to the viewer about who Victor is, to heighten the drama of the Episode 10 reveal. Victor is set up as someone who has many passing affairs, few of which manage to hold his interest.
One of those narrativesâthat Victor is just using Yuuri as an excuse to figure out what heâs doingâis clearly false. The other one, IMO should be treated with extreme skepticism.
Given how little we know of Victor, I think anyone can legitimately headcanon Victor anywhere between actual playboy andâŠthe opposite of actual playboy, which is much more likely to be the case.
What we do know of Victorâthe part that comes directly from himselfâis that heâs spent more than twenty years having neither life nor love. You could probably squish a playboy-ish image into that, but⊠Not easily, I donât think.
If you start from that perspective, you see Victorâs actions in the first few episodes as fumblingâterrible fumblingâbecause he has absolutely no idea what heâs doing.
And hereâs where we get Kuboâs third brilliant narrative stroke. If you try to explain the way Victor tries to seduce Yuuri in the first few episodes, heâs absolutely off kilter. This is not how a seasoned playboy would approach a skittish ingenue. âHey, letâs sleep together to get to know each other better!â is actually really hilarious when viewed as an actual attempt to start a relationship.
The viewer reads all this as, essentially, fanservice in the first few episodes. We read it as a character overacting, over-exaggerating, to get those sexy frames in place. But these are coupled with things that donât quite fit the fanservice imageâVictor crying at night while hugging Makkachin, Victor looking away and sighing when Yuuri refuses to talk to him, Victor getting massively drunk when Yuuri says that katsudon is his eros.
Kubo uses and subverts the trope of fanservice. We think we know what weâre seeing. The reality? Again, open to interpretation, but my headcanon is that Victor is actually Bad At Seduction. He doesnât know what to do; heâs basically imitating fanservice because he has very little actual real world experience. (Whether you see this as Victor-as-sexually-inexperienced, or Victor-as-never-having-had-to-do-work-because-everyone-comes-to-him-first is again up for grabs).
From Victorâs perspective, Yuuri is the seasoned playboy, and he thinks that all he has to do is signal that heâs available. So he shows up, naked, and is likeâŠuh, how do we do this thing? I touch you, right? And ask you who youâre into? This is how we do it? No? Okay, well, letâs keep trying new things.
Victor knows heâs failing, but you donât land a quad flip by giving up on the first try. So he keeps trying. Okay, that didnât workâŠletâs go somewhere together! Letâs sleep together! Letâs go to the beach together!
It isnât until episode four that Yuuri and Victor sit down and Victor just flat out asks the equivalent of this: âYuuri, I have no idea how to human, HOW DO I DO THIS THING.â
And Yuuri tells him to be himself.
So, long story short, âVictor as playboyâ is IMO a construction that is built by Kubo based on testimony from highly unreliable narrators to heighten the drama of the episode 10 reveal.
I HAVE SOME VERY IMPORTANT FEELINGS ABOUT VIKTOR NIKIFOROV AND YOI
Listen:
A major reason why Viktor is so captivated by Yuuri at the banquet is because, from his perspective, Yuuri is happier to have lost than Viktor is to have won. Viktor is at the top of his game but feels like thereâs no savour to it, no real satisfaction - but Yuuri, who just came in last, is smiling and dancing and laughing and (seemingly) having a fabulous time in a way that Viktor never has, even when he was younger. Heâs watching this guy talk Yurio into a dance-off and pole dance with Chris without the slightest bit of shame or hesitation, and heâs thinking, What the fuck does Yuuri (whoâs incidentally super hot) know about skating - and about life - that I donât? So he approaches him, nervously at first but with increasing confidence, and soon gets so caught up in the moment that he starts having fun like Yuuri is, too. Viktor won the Grand Pix and didnât feel like heâd done anything new, but dancing with Yuuri? That made him smile, and heâs all lit up and wondering what else Yuuri can teach him that he didnât know and trying to work up the courage to ask -
- and Yuuri goes and asks Viktor to teach him.
And in that moment, when Viktor gasps and the whole world rearranges itself, it matters to Viktor, not just because heâs attracted to Yuuri and at a professional loose end, but because he thinks that Yuuri sees something in him that he doesnât see himself - and more, that Yuuri, as just evidenced by their dancing, has the unique ability to make him see it, too. Viktor has never had fun at a banquet before, but the man who just lost the Grand Prix has made him feel more alive than any of his medals ever did.
Which is also why, from the moment they meet again in Hasetsu,Viktor repeatedly fails to understand how Yuuriâs issues with anxiety and low self-esteem are intrinsically tied to his belief that heâs a poor skater: because the Yuuri Viktor met at the banquet didnât care that heâd lost. Over and over again, Viktor tries to push Yuuri into not caring about the outcome because his formative impression of Yuuri is of someone who responds to losing by going out, having a wonderful time and seducing the fuck out of the person who did win, i.e. as someone who emotionally handles loss better than Viktor handles winning. So when he sees Yuuri get nervous before a skate, heâs not being callous in bluntly reminding Yuuri that he might lose or what could go wrong: heâs trying to parse the disconnect between the anxious Yuuri in front of him and the Yuuri he remembers who didnât give a fuck when he actually did lose. Heâs trying to say, albeit clumsily, âOnce this is over, you wonât care if you lost; youâll bounce back and do your own thing, so accept the worst case scenario now and move on from stressing about it.â
What Viktor doesnât understand is that, not only his fundamental view of Yuuri based on a single night of deeply uncharacteristic behaviour, but that Yuuri doesnât remember it. Even once Viktor realises that Yuuriâs extroversion and drinking at the banquet are anomalies, he still thinks heâs able to allude to its significance in a positive way: remember that time you lost the Grand Prix final, had an utterly wonderful evening with all our friends and seduced me into becoming your coach? Thatâs Yuuriâs worst case scenario, and from Viktorâs perspective, it turned out great! Why on Earth would Yuuri be afraid of something that spectacular happening again? It doesnât help that Viktor has no personal experience with that sort of confidence/anxiety issue in the first place, which means he has a poor ability to gauge when heâs pushing too hard, but the whole time, Yuuriâs missing memory is the elephant in the room. Viktor never refers to the banquet directly because, when Yuuri fails to bring it up, he logically assumes that Yuuri is embarrassed, not that heâs forgotten it altogether, and without knowing this vital piece of information, all his attempts to remind Yuuri that you failed and something new and wonderful came from it are interpreted by Yuuri as youâve failed before and could fail again.
And I just.
I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THIS, OKAY?
TOP FIVE STORIES PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT VICTOR "MY HUSBAND" NIKIFOROV
HOW CAN I PICK JUST FIVE, DADVANS, HE IS LIKE, A CRYPTID THAT JUST WANTS TO SHOW YOU PICTURES OF HIS BEAUTIFUL HUSBAND AND ADORABLE DOG. WHO PROBABLY DONâT EXIST. HE PROBABLY BOUGHT OUT SOME DUDEâS STOCK OF MODELING PHOTOS. THEREâS NO WAY A DUDE THAT CUTE EXISTS IN THIS TOWN, WEâD KNOW ABOUT IT.
âokay you know that guy who comes in, the russian one that tips well?â âwait, the one thatâs always talking about his husband and their dog?â âyeah, that guy! he came in with cupcakes he said his husband made, theyâre in the break room.âÂ
âso we had this girl being harassed, and like, this super gay dude just sat down beside her, whipped out an ipad, and started showing her pictures of his husband and their dog like heâd known her for years, and the guy trying to hit on her tried to tell him they were talking, and the super gay dude says, in this super Russian accent âdonât be stupid, nobody would want to talk to you. go away. weâre looking at pictures of my husbandâ.â âLMAO thatâs My Husband, heâs always here when his husband is travelling.â
âthis guy came in to get an actual fucking blue rinse on his hair and spent the entire time talking about how his husband learned how to knit and made him a scarf and he went on and on about how talented he wasâ âwas the scarf goodâ âlmao it looked like someone threw yarn against a wall and picked it up all tangledâ âwhat did you say?â âwhat do you think I said, he tipped me 40% and took ten cards.â
âI think My Husband is catfishing us, because I looked at the pictures he has of My Husband and lmao thatâs like, Yuri Katsuki the skater.â âwhat, really?â âI mean, My Husband is hot or whatever, but can you imagine being married to him?â âlmao he probably downloaded the pictures and built this entire imaginary life about him and Katsuki, poor dude.âÂ
âGUYS. GUYS, THIS IS NOT A DRILL. ALERT. ALERT. GUYS. MY HUSBANDâS HUSBAND IS AT THE BAR, AND HE HAS OUR DOG WITH HIM. ALERT. ALERT. MY HUSBANDâS HUSBAND AND OUR DOG ARE REAL, AND THEYâRE SITTING AT THE BAR. ACT CALM.â âholy shit itâs actually yuri katsuki.â âare you fucking kidding me.â
oh my god. so do you ever tweet something stupid like âa yoi vampire au where victor let yuuri bite him during the sochi banquetâ, and then your entire tl gangs up on you and makes you contemplate this in vivid detail until words come out.
ââ
Everyone knew that Yuuri Katsuki was a vampire.
It wasnât much of a problem, these days. Viktor had had a vampire rinkmate once, when heâd just moved up to the junior division. Ivan hadnât been any stronger or faster, and heâd only shrugged when Viktor asked about the blood.
âItâs like â wanting ice cream,â heâd tried to explain. âItâs good if you have it, but you donât need it, yes?â
Thatâs what centuries of defensive breeding did for you. Humans far outnumbered vampires, after all.
So Yuuri Katsuki was a vampire, which didnât mean as much as âYuuri Katsuki has level 4 spins but canât land a quad Salchow,â and Viktor wouldnât have thought any more about it except that Yuuri Katsuki placed sixth at the Grand Prix Final in Sochi and got very drunk at the banquet, after.

Roundtable Interview with Sayo Yamamotoâs friends
So as many of you havenât noticed, Sayo Yamamoto (who is the true NUMBER ONE creator and end all for Yuri On Ice) doesnât do interviews. However, recently some of her friends did a roundtable interview/discussion on the series, which IMO kind of acted as a sort of proxy for Sayoâs feelings. At the very least, as her friends that know her, they would very likely. I talked about it on [Twitter] but via request Iâm posting it here too. [source to interview]
So Iâve seen several yoi critical people talk about how the concept of âYuri on Ice showing a progressive (canon) gay couple that subverts shitty yaoi tropesâ as an exclusively western projection. However, in this interview we outright have grown Japanese men who are friends of Sayoâs say exactly that.
Not translating verbatim but essentially they talk about how Victor and Yuuri are very clearly gay but that their sexuality is not an issue at all. There is no cliche âBUT WEâRE BOTH MENâ from either of them. Itâs also noted that this is different from most awful BL in the lack of discrimination and it avoids how BL likes to play discrimination [homophobia] for laugh as if itâs ~funny~
Also similar to how Western fandom talks at times, they do mention that their relationship is a little âundefinedâ and indirect, and that the show could have benefited if it had a little bit more of the romance to answer for that. That said, they were absolutely shocked how far they went in showing their relationship. (Note: ææ/renai is what they use. Very overt wording there, no ambiguous æ/ai)  Â
((Edit: To be clearâyes, they are saying in as much that Victor and Yuuri canonly have romantic feelings going on/are canon/however you want to phrase it.))
Reblogging because this is important stuff.
Whatâs also fair to note is that whenever they refer to Yuuri and Victorâs relationship they call it âromantic loveâ (which is renai ææ), and not âteacher-studentâ or anything like that.
They also say that the relationship was believable without any explicit expressions of love and it just naturally progressed from the initial coach and skater stage and was naturally accepted by everyone as normal.
They also outright call the sightseeing in Barcelona a date.
They also say that Victor and Yuuri may flirt a lot but theyâre also doing many things for each other (like Yuuri skating for Victor) so itâs deeper than just surface-level attraction/affection and itâs what partly makes the story about doing something with a loved one in mind and not just a typical romance, and itâs what makes people empathize with the story.
So yeah, even adult Japanese men (who, mind you, were born and raised in completely different times) who you wouldnât expect to see the anime this way actually see it this way. They see it the way most fans see it. So itâs not even about a âWestern perspectiveâ thing - anyone whoâs not outright denying it can easily see it. People can tell that itâs gay and itâs gay in a different way than BL is (one comment in the video actually said that some BL fans didnât like YOI and Iâm like lol I wonder why). Moreover, they not only acknowledge that itâs gay - they embrace it and still enjoy the show.
Like, I donât know about you guys, but yeah, thatâs pretty damn big in my opinion.
