it's a mystery
This map, created by Chenxiao Guo in 2024, shows the most common natural disasters across the United States.
It is a strong example of how cartography can be used to simplify a very complex topic. Instead of publishing seven separate maps, the author brings all major hazard types together in one view and assigns a different colour to each of them:
Droughts (yellow), based on data from 2000 to 2021
Hail (green), using records from 1950 to 2021
Hurricanes (light blue), covering 1950–2021
Floods (dark blue), covering 1950–2021
Tornadoes (purple), with data from 1900 to 2021
Forest fires (red), shown as average risk
Earthquakes (grey), using data from 1950 to 2021
The map is built from hexagons of the same size. In each hexagon, Guo places a small circle made up of all seven colours. A stronger colour simply means that this particular disaster is more common in that area.
Because of this design, the main spatial patterns are easy to read. Droughts and forest fires clearly dominate along the West Coast and much of the western interior. Floods and tornadoes are most typical across the Mississippi plains. In the southeastern states, hurricanes appear together with frequent flooding. Earthquakes stand out mainly in Alaska and in California.
also it's wonderfully trippy
Hairstyles and Facial Hair in the Navy
When it comes to the appearance of men on board, the first thing that comes to mind is usually the uniforms, but not necessarily what the men had on their heads and faces. And yet it is an essential part of a sailor’s appearance, the hair. Whereas in the 17th century, men grew strong beards, usually with elaborately styled moustaches. He wore an elaborately coiffed and powdered wig on his head, made of animal or human hair. In the 18th century, however, the beard was no longer welcome, it was considered to be unclean and socially disreputable if a man wore a beard. In the army and navy, deserters were often associated with it. The wig became shorter and finally disappeared with the French Revolution, as it became associated with the display of wealth.

Sailors and officers also began to shave their faces clean, sometimes with a thin, barely visible line of hair on the sides called wiskers. The hair was long and wrapped in tape or cloth, called a pigtail. But this did not mean that the hair was evenly long. Quite often the front part was short, the sides longer until it became a long braid. Pigtails became so popular that some even resorted to fake ones to get the length they needed. Until 1795, officers’ hair was still powdered and curled on the sides.
Captain Horatio Nelson, clean shaved with natural powdered hair and pigtail in a Portrait of 1781 (left) Rear- Admiral Edward Pellew with short hair and sideburns in a portrait of 1804 (right)
This changed when a powder tax was introduced and it became too expensive to powder the hair. From 1800 onwards, it became apparent that long hair was no longer fashionable and began to give way to shorter hair. One reason was that it was again considered unclean to have long hair and dangerous, as a Sailor could injure himself with such hair. The long hair style, however, gave way only slowly, as it was a way of showing respect for the veterans and heroes who had served so well.
This painting from the Battle of Trafalgar shows the variation in long, medium-length and short hairstyles, such as sideburns, among the men on deck at HMS Victory, by Sammuel Drummond 1806
In 1808, the Marines were ordered to have short hair only. Instead, the wiskers grew into sturdy sideburns, especially during the Wars of 1812, even to very large specimens, but not to a complete beard that it was still considered unseemly. The sideburns could also vary greatly in their design, for example, they had no connection to the main hair but only came from the nape of the neck. Following the line of the jaw.
Admiral Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, with short hair and almost rectangular sideburns, c. 1830 (left) Commander James Clark Ross with short hair and neck sideburns, 1834 (right)
This changed from the middle of the 19th century onwards, when it became acceptable again to wear a beard, and it was even considered extraordinarily masculine to have a handsome beard. Instead, the hair was now short and marked by a prominent parting on the side.
The same can be said for the US Navy. During the American Revolution, the Continental Navy kept its men clean-shaven. The resurgence of hostilities with Britain in the early 19th century breathed new life into the young and economically depressed navy. Many of the officers and Sailors chose to grow magnificent sideburns during their service in the War of 1812. Many of their British counterparts also opted for sideburns, as mentioned earlier.
Commodore Stephen Decatur, with curled short hair and sideburns, c. 1815 (left) Commodore David Porter with short hair and sideburns, unknown date (right)
These remained until the Civil War broke out. Here, too, as in England, the hair was worn short in a pregnant side bun. Instead, a whole variation of facial hair was observed. From whole beards, neck beards, moustaches or side beards.
Union Naval Officers with different hair and beardstyles, 1862
So you can see that there were not so many differences between the birthers and the americans and that the styles were also strongly influenced by the prevailing fashion of the time.
okay but what is a pregnant side bun?

Analytical AI is what's good for a lot of things, if we set aside the bit of how it's still not intelligence, artificial or not.

Republicans are building a concentration camp in the Everglades, with plans to build more in other states.
They are "deputizing" militia lunatics and sending them out to terrorize our communities.
They just gave ICE a bigger budget than the USMC. FORTY BILLION DOLLARS.
They keep talking about deporting people who are American citizens, people who have done nothing wrong, who have broken no laws. In some cases, they've already done that. They've talked about suspending habeas corpus and declaring martial law.
They are telling us, in word and in deed, that they are turning their rage and violence directly onto American citizens. RIght now, they are laser focused on terrorizing immigrant communities, but this will not stop with the communities they are terrorizing right now. They are going to go after journalists, professors, influencers who don't fall into line, and more.
They are building a police state, in plain sight, and they are telling us exactly what they are going to do when they are done.

'This won't work, this isn't widespread, nobody knows, we're in a bubble, blah blah blah' my mom, a 64 year old lady with no social media whose first language is spanish, told me about this before tumblr did, and said we are going to participate.

Kinda disheartening tbh when you search for people talking about something on tumblr and you find only a single post with like 10 notes. Anyway, I learned about this from Facebook just today and decided I'm going to abuse my follower count to spread the word.
You'll have a hard time finding this in the news because it's being covered up, but from February 4-present the RCMP have been conducting raids on multiple Mi'kmaw reserves part of Acadia First Nation. Their excuse is that they are searching for illegal cannabis.
During the raids, so far they:
Stole a number of truck houses
Stole money from an 8-yo boy's piggy-bank that he had been saving for two years
Invaded homes and destroyed personal property, including basketwork and carvings
Broke the door down of a bathroom occupied by a 14-yo boy as he was using it - the boy has been traumatized by this
Assaulted a man for questioning why they were searching his property without providing a warrant, pinning him into the snow
Cut power of security cameras to hide these actions
I cannot stress enough that the RCMP coming down this hard on our people over motherfucking cannabis is nothing but a racist excuse. There are countless, countless, countless white-owned massive grow-ops making big money without cops lifting a single finger.
There is an informal petition you can sign here. EDIT: I've informed the petition owner that there is a field error - hopefully it'll be fixed soon

As a kid learning about the holocaust, I never understood how people could let Nazis rise to power. But now I’m watching it happen in real time.
Calling all Brits on this hellsite.
We all saw Elon Musk do the nazi salute at the Trump inauguration. We know that he is influencing and fanning the flames of right wing political parties.
And that very well may include ours.
Because Elon Musk has pledged to donate $100 million to the Reform party. He has since mentioned that it might be hard to give such a large sum now.
But I don’t think we should take our chances. And I think we can agree that letting billionaires influence our countries politics is a terrible idea.
If you also agree here’s a link to a Parliament petition.
It calls for the government to remove loopholes that allow wealthy foreign individuals to make donations into UK political parties (e.g. by funnelling through UK registered companies).
As it is a parliament petition the government are required to debate it in parliament. But for that to happen it needs to reach 100,000 signatures.
Non British folk I’m afraid you guys can’t sign but I encourage you guys to reblog so that more people can see this.
we could be so fucking wet and loud
