not sure if this detail is bbc-ver specific, but I haven’t seen anyone mention the hog/beast being a mother yet.

when they finally hunt and kill the hog in the field, it’s asked, “what will happen to her children?”

the highlighting of the hog/beast as a mother is the way to show the beginning of the boys’ descent into an eradication of nuture, empathy, and innocence— destroying the traits or gifts of a mother. in addition, they then strand the piglets motherless, which directly parallels the now motherless/parentless boys on the island.

going even deeper — especially with the bbc-lotf author’s intentions of highlighting the inflictions of toxic masculinity— the murder of the mother can also be seen as the boys’ attempts to rid themselves of the femininity they perceive as weakness. with the hog head haunting them — especially simon — it shows how their softer emotions and empathy are haunting them, representing those “feminine” traits they try so hard to cleanse themselves of.

with the absence of the mother, the children die. in this case, this death is both literal for some of the boys and spiritual for the rest. the ghost of the mother — of nurture, of love, — is what lingers, generating their fear and guilt.

I just learned about the existance of “pretend to work” spaces in China where you can pay to pretend to work at a realistic looking fake office so that you can take selfies to pretend that you have a job and get your family to stop asking why you’re unemployed. Which is like such a capitalism thing that I have no joke to make about it.

The worst thing you can do, as someone who has recently realised they are transfem, is to let terves and transphobes convince you cis women will never accept you.

I was told that when I came out everyone would reject me. That I would find myself isolated from the world, and from other women especially, who would react to me with horror and revulsion.

In reality, within the first months of coming out, in no particular order:

My sister's reaction on my coming out was, "Right, so I have a sister instead of a brother. Cool. I'm taking you clothes shopping tomorrow."

A friend, when she learned I am a woman, immediately invited me to her women-only, girls-night-out birthday party the following week.

Another friend, when a friend of hers expressed doubts about my gender, immediately shut them down and reaffirmed I am a woman.

I went camping with a group of friends, and we had two tents, one for the boys and one for the girls; I was unsure as to which I should enter, to which a girl friend responded by grabbing me and physically dragging me inside the women's tent.

In the women's bathroom at a movie theatre a random woman, whom I'd never seen before and haven't seen since, stopped me as I was going into a stall, to warn me there was no toilet paper in there, because she'd just used the last of it.

All of these, and more, some from friends, some from complete strangers. All within a few months, as a trans woman who hadn't started medical transition yet, and was very visible as being a trans woman.

I've had some people reject me, true, but the vast majority, including almost all cis women, accepted me as a sister with open arms.

Cis women are cool. It's terves who are bigots.

you will never catch me complaining about an actress on a tv show having an imperfectly concealed pregnancy or a character going on a sudden trip somewhere while her actress is on maternity leave. so many actresses (and women working in any other field) are fired, punished and pressured into making reproductive decisions for their employers' convenience & if i have to try a bit harder to suspend my disbelief then that's absolutely what i'm going to do if it means people are getting to exercise reproductive & bodily autonomy without punishment

I think the problem with a lot of “feminist” classical retellings that makes them fail at being feminist is that they’re villainizing the wrong characters.

Stop holding the gods to human standards. They’re not human. That is quite literally the point of MULTIPLE Euripides plays. Go after the heroes.

But go after the RIGHT heroes. Why are we vilifying Hector, arguably one of the least problematic heroes, in stories where Achilles and Agamemnon exist? Why is Paris exempt from criticism, but Menelaus is the epitome of evil? (That part is also aimed at Euripides, I love The Trojan Women but holy shit you did him dirty my guy.) Why are we not being MORE hateful towards Jason? Why are we continuing to make Medea the villain?

Why are we making shit up about Romeo to give Juliet her “feminist freedom arc” that she ALREADY HAS IN THE PLAY? Paris is RIGHT THERE, go rip HIM to shreds. And on the opposite spectrum of that, why don’t we NAME everyone who wronged Ophelia instead of sanitizing her to the point where she’s a completely different character, and in the end, oppressing her just like everyone else in the play?

A lot of this also boils down to the refusal to accept women and feminine characters as flawed, as well as the refusal to acknowledge that, in order to uphold these false narratives, you have to completely destroy characters who aren’t traditionally masculine or feminine, but clearly we’re not ready for that conversation yet.
