"Well no one would have to know about it. Is this really how you are going to treat your future wife."
"I suppose if it'll be our little secret..."
Though she was meant to be tucked up in her dorm room fast asleep, Theresa found herself in the vast kitchen of St. Clair. Tea always helped her sleep and after an hour of laying in bed without sleeping, it was exactly what she needed. Realizing she wasn't totally alone the brunette took a sip of her tea and turned around. "If you have nothing better to do then lurk in the doorway like that the least I could do is offer you some tea."
'cause darling i'm a n i g h t m a r e, dressed like a d a y d r e a m.
Thomas could hear the change in her tone of voice, had seen the emotions flick across her face as she tried to comprehend his being there. She went from shock to confusion and now settled on thinly veiled anger. He could hear the intense emotion in Reesa’s voice as she spoke and hearing those words come out of her mouth hurt him more than he thought possible. He had known she would be angry, his conversation with Etta a few days ago had made that abundantly clear, but he hadn’t been able to help that tiny spark of hope inside of him that said she might be glad to see him after all these years.
He should have known better, he really should have. After what he had done to her, how he had abandoned her, his best friend, when she needed him most and disappeared without a trace, how had he ever expected more from her? Reesa had every right to be furious with him and now that he could sense her anger bubbling to the surface, he wanted her to unleash it on him.
Most people who met him would say that he was an arrogant, cocky bastard, and that “nothing and no one” would ever be able to humble him. None of that was the case, however, with Reesa. She had always been his soft spot, his weak point, his trigger and now was no different. He had hurt her like he had never hurt anyone else and now he wanted her to rage and scream at him, to slap him like he knew he deserved. Thomas decided there was no use tiptoeing around her trying to keep her calm, because she wasn’t going to stay calm no matter what he did. This was Reesa, not some demure little flower of a girl, and she was pissed.
"That Fairchild man dragged me here," he began, much louder than he originally intended, "tracked me down for God knows what reason and used his fucking blood manipulation to drag me across the country, ‘till they had me locked inside these gates.”
He hadn’t wanted to be here, hadn’t wanted to come, but now that he was here, now that he was reunited with Tessa at last, he couldn’t vary well leave while there was still a chance of their reconciling. In order to do that, they had to get it all out.
"I didn’t want to be here, Reesa! I knew you wouldn’t want to see me and I didn’t want to be trapped like a mouse in a maze!" He was breathing heavier now, ready to fight, but he lowered his voice slightly so that he was no longer shouting. “I never meant to hurt you, I really didn’t.”
When he finally replied to her question, Theresa did the one thing that surprised even her. She laughed. It was bitter and short, lacking the humor and joy that one would prefer. "So you didn't even come here for me." She'd been so stupid and naive to have even a glimmer of hope that he was here for her. He wasn't at the institute for her, hell he wasn't there for anyone. He'd been dragged there, kicking and screaming apparently. If he'd come for her, things would have been so much different. She could have had the happy family reunion she'd dreamed of since he'd left her. But no, instead he'd crushed that hope.
"You don't get it do you?" The tears that she'd been holding back began threatening to fall again. But she didn't care, not anymore. "All i've ever wanted for all these years was to see you." By that point the tears had fallen but there was simply no stopping it now it. "Do you know what it was like? Wondering every single day if you were okay or...if you'd ended up like mom and dad. I had no idea if you were alive or dead." There was so much she needed to say to him but she had no idea how to express half of it. "You probably don't, you probably didn't even care or else you wouldn't have left in the first place."
She should have known better, after all. If he'd wanted to see her he wouldn't have stopped for lunch first. Come to think of it she had no idea how long he'd even been there. It could have been days, weeks, or even months for all she knew. The institute was a pretty big place and hiding wouldn't have been that hard with a little effort. So he'd probably gone so far as avoiding her then, depending how long he'd been there.
Anger surged through her at the simple thought. She'd thought about him every single day, but he hadn't even cared enough about her to see how she was. It wasn't fair. She wished she could be as heartless as he was, and not give a damn about about anything or anyone. She'd tried through the years to cut herself off from everyone, but the closest she'd ever gotten was pretending. It would make life so much easier, like right now for instance she wouldn't be feeling more rage then she ever had before. Before she even knew what was happening, the brunette did just about the most unladylike thing she ever had and slapped her brother straight across the face.
"You know what, Thomas? You can go to hell because i'm done. I just don't care anymore." It was a lie, of course. She'd always care about her brother no matter what he did. Right now though, she was just too mad to realize that.
"You’re just to sweet, Tessa. It’s a win win situation."
"I know, right? It couldn't get better then this."
"Is this how you are going to be to your future wife? —Don’t come to me when you run out, I’ll just go get my own."
"But darling if I shared with you i'd have to share with everyone. Special treatment simply isn't fair."
"Thank you for that, I’ll remember to warn you next time she comes looking for you at Etta."
"It's not a problem, although your mother did nearly bore me to death."
"Well seeing as she pays me, I’m afraid I’ll keep my mouth decidedly shut on that,” he responded, a smile playing at his lips. “And if I lose my job…? I fear I’d be rubbish at much else.”
"It's not like she can hear you here, and I surely won't be telling her." Tessa said honestly. Just like most people around the institute, she went out of her way to avoid their dear head mistress. "Oh I believe you'd lose it, probably just be demoted. After all from the looks of it you seem to be pretty good at the uh...maintenance."
"i'd offer you a drink but I went through quite a bit of trouble to get this, so pardon me if i'd like to keep it to myself."
“I’ll have to ask how much extra I’m getting paid for repairs now…" he muttered to himself, standing on a rickety chair as he adjusted a wooden ceiling tile.
"Knowing Cecily she'll try and jip you out of anything extra." The brunette said a smirk. "You may have to strike."
"Get the perfect ring for the perfect girl, right? I always knew I was special. Now you can walk around all freeingly when you please."
"Of course, nothing but the best for you Cordy. How lovely."
"She didn’t see me did see? Hiding in plain sight worked just fine."
"That's just be I was nice enough to distract her for you, next time I may not be around."
"That hat is lovely, where did you get it?”
"I don't remember actually, I got it so long ago."
"So I should be expecting a ring soon?"
"Absolutely, just as soon as I find the perfect one."
"Is she gone?"
"The coast is clear, but you know you really should come up with some better hiding places for next time."
