Unlike (I presume) the majority of people in my class, I’m finding 2nd year not as exciting as 1st year. Just recently over the last couple weeks I’ve kind of found classes a wee bit uninspiring, perhaps it’s the lack of any real focus on cinema. We’re kind of just always talking about group projects and stuff, but we’re never really analyzing anything in these classes, which for me just kind of reminds me of High School. It does just feel like everyone only cares about assignments being due and not really about expanding their knowledge on how script-writing and the industry works. Which might be intentional, but for me (someone who isn’t “life or death” over getting an A+ on an assignment) I do just feel a little uninterested in the whole situation. I’ve been saying since day 1 that grading/scoring is basically irrelevant at film school and should just be replaced with proper constructive feedback, and alas I think that rings most true nowadays where everyone just seems focused on getting “top in class” marks. But yeah, rant over.
Shit what else do I talk about?... Ummmmm
Siobhan Class - Okay so I actually really enjoyed these classes because we finally got to examine film. Siobhans really smart and knows her shit well, the films she picked were great films to study and the fact that we did this with the Directors was great because we got to see their opinions and thoughts as well. This was a good class!
TV Writing - I do believe this to be my favorite class at the moment. I think Ben is a solid teacher that knows his shit, I do think it’d be cool to see more of him however, we only really get to see him on the 1 class which tends to always end early anyway. So our interaction time with him is fairly limited, but yeah besides that class is cool, the TV group assignment is trodding along well. The tutorial my group had with Ben was awesome, but it was the only time we properly got to be one and one with him (which sucks), but yeah the time we had with him was great and we really got to talk things out properly and it was probably the most i’ve learnt all year (in a 3 hour period).
Gaming - Games writing is important, especially in this day and age where the industry has really taken off. The classes themselves have been alright, they tend to go on like an hour too long and a lot of the class seems like time-wasting. But when we really talk about writing for games or get into little group projects, I think the class becomes a lot more inspired. (I also think we should have 2 teachers for this class)
I still think the shit we did with the directors and actors at the start of the year is by farrrrrrrr the best stuff we’ve done all year. I presume the majority of the class would agree, so yeah VCA, more of that collaborating stuff. Tis fun.
Yeah dunno what else to say? Everyone in class seems to just hate each other and people barely rock-up anymore, plus I think some people are just straight up bullies bullies.
So Annabelle if you’re reading this I think it’s important that we have a catch-up class with you so we can all give our thoughts on how the year has gone and hopefully straighten some of this crap out.
But hey I’m still enjoying Uni !
