Doctor Strange Sheds Light on Minorities
Finally someone has the guts to focus on White lives in Asia
In the vast magical lands of Nepal, the only thing more common than the beautiful mountain tops is the scent of pure orientalism. The Ancient One, a sacred being who has lived for thousands of years wears traditional robes and drinks green tea by the kettle. However instead of focusing on the native people who have actually lived there for centuries, the directors made an amazing choice to hire a minority, a white woman. Finally someone had the balls to hire a predominately white cast in a film set in Nepal. Of course we already know so many Asian actors like Jackie Chan, and Jackie Chan to name a few, so to shed light on Caucasians ad to share their unheard stories was amazing to see for the first time.
Of course there were some draw backs to this progress. The crowds without speaking roles were heavily cast with Asians, but thankfully, all of the training monks and speaking roles went to non native people. The only exception is three minutes of the film that featured the character of Wong who is also known as Chien Po from Disney’s Mulan. This one liner sits quietly in the library doing homework all day, but secretly has a love for Beyonce and did I mention books. Hollywood has given too much time for these characters and moving forward, there needs to be more white representation in Hollywood because these voices have never been heard. Doctor Strange is pushing new boundaries on classic Hollywood and is pushing for diversity and difference on screen.
