Art Hop 2013, Friday September 6th
We have arrived at The Root Gallery's 22nd creative competition! And yet again we are astounded by the spectrum of creativity on show in the gallery, and equally, by the long trips including folks coming from Montpelier and the Northeast Kingdom to our home at RL Photo. What a treat!
First place went to the one and only Brooke Monte and his off-beat off-kilter "Invado." Second place was a tie between Abby Manock's wild "Bag Tag Arena"--check out her book on sale, which gives a full and festive explanation- and Rod McIver's "Harriery Eyes." Third place was snagged, yet again, by David Powell's collaged painting style in "Peasant Dance."
Keep an eye out for the next Creative 'Comp in this year's upcoming Art Hop as the largest un-juried art competition Burlington has yet to see! Remember, anything creative can be entered for an eight dollar submission. Winner takes all the submissions after everyone's favorite pieces are tallied up. Yep, that's right, anyone can vote, anyone can enter, anyone can win! Don't be the one to miss it!
The Creative Comp is Tonight! We are getting excited, so should you!
Creative Competition #21 July 5, 2013
The persistant rains let up this past Friday to add a dash of heat, sun, and summer to our 21st creative competition! It has been said that poor weather creates culture, and so it is--for this month had record downpours and this month's competition had an equal share of creativity.
Congratulations to Abby Manock on taking first place for her large-scale, expressive, diptych titled, "Pre...Post." Brian Goblik's portrait, "Blake," took second place with its beautifully described lines and colors. Third place went to a creative bright and print-like painting by Brooke Monte, titled "Harmonic Interval.
Other highlights include a stone carved insect, in perfect salute for the cicada emergence, a beautifully intricate and abstract black-and-white charcoal drawing, a collaged painting of quirky swimmers with elegant linearly style drawn figures, a window screen turned dynamic and flowery hanging sculpture, and a pleasant surprise visit from the harmonica case man, with an ever-clever and ever-original hand-made harmonica case.
With another great competition behind us, we only look forward to the next!
Creative Comp #21, this firday! come on out!
Creative Competition #20, June 7 2013
The twentieth Creative Competition was another creative night, and especially festive as we celebrated Clark's Birthday.
First place went to Ryan Pierson for his three-art entry in which he created the album artwork, made music, and put it all in his whimsical, humorous stop-motion-video . "Do Da Do," can be viewed below. Second place went to Abby Manock's, self-designed inflatable sky-dancer, "Noodle," which greeted people as they came up to the gallery with its enthusiastic waving and flailing just outside the entrance. Third place went to Django Hulphers' "Under My Skin." A brightly lit, flashy, and aptly named sculpture painting combo.
Other highlights include physically printed and manipulated crows-feet as Barbara Zuckers' "Time Signatures," surrealist style painting depicting a person in the ragweed (allergies allusion?), a live punk rock serenade, a beautiful yet dangerous spiked sculpture in copper, and a dedication to Clark with contributions from friends and family.
What a great night! Thanks for participation, and we are open all month Monday-Friday 9-5! Come on in!

Creative Competition #17, March 1 2013
The Seventeenth Creative Comp has come like a lion and gone like a lamb. We had a wonderful turnout for all the 41 artists (!!!) who entered pieces this month. Our top were, in first place, Nissa Kauppila's always vibrant fauna watercolors "#25", in second place, Molley Bosley's intricate paper carving, titled "An Awkward Grimace", and Katlin Parenteau's "Dream and Spirits" in third. In addition to our winners, we had Forrest White's "Visit"--equal parts stone sculpture, geometric drawing, and painting, then Abby Manock's aptly named "The Creeper" keeping watch over the show, as well as two photographs by Bruce St. Amour and David Lindsay respectively, followed by Emily Parulis's graphite and pencil drawing, and finally Phil Wells' sculpture in stone. See you all next Month!
Creative Competition #16, February 1 2013
The latest Creative Competition has come and gone in dramatic fashion. At the end of the night we had a three way tie for first place; winnings and glory were shared by Wylie Sophia Garcia with her beautiful, felted ball gown, "Cloaking Device", Grace Weaver with her whimsical painting, "Saucy Flosser", and Danielle Berg's towering sculpture in wood, "Treet" (Danielle happens to be our awesome new gallery assistant!). Other entrees included a breathtaking, handblown glass handgun by Kurt B., a 24 hour ball point pen drawing by Sophie Howat, Lynne Bond's untitled sculpture that speaks for itself, an homage to the letter E by Molly Bosley, and a triptic of hauntingly beautiful flowers by Emily Parulis.
Creative Competition #15, January 4 2013
Here we are again, another great creative competition has come, with gifts on gifts on gifts: We had a spidermen side by side, a portrait of Jackie Robinson, New years well wishes in wire, An enchanting portait of honey and and its keeper, ballet on wheels, and our winner this month, Chris Stearns' striking photography printed on aluminum. Enjoy, and Happy New Year from the Root Gallery!
