Help Us Help You, Pretty Little Liars
During the Pretty Little Liars summer finale, I was chatting with Autostraddle CEO/Editor-In-Chief, Riese Bernard, about how in the world we were going to handle the show’s decision to make a transgender woman Big A. We were both discouraged and worried because trans women are the most persecuted members of the LGBT community — 17 DMAB trans people have been murdered so far this year — and research conclusively proves that media representation of minorities directly affects public perception of minorities, and public perception of minorities is the catalyst for negative and positive actions taken toward minorities. I rather optimistically said to her at the time that all eyes would be on our site to react to the big reveal, and we could use that opportunity to have a really nuanced, important conversation about trans representation on television.
To the great credit of many of the PLL writers, directors and actors, they shared my review — which was quoted extensively on other websites, including Vox, Flavorwire, and The Huffington Post — with their social media followers because they wanted to contribute to an open dialogue about what the show got right and what it got wrong, and the very real dangers facing transgender women. I was really proud and encouraged by those responses.
Today, Pretty Little Liars’ official Twitter tweeted this.
The graphic features a quote from Alison from an episode earlier in the season, and the dialogue of the text features a quote from Hanna from earlier in the season.
As I wrote in my recap at the time:
After the show already knew Charlotte was transgender and would be revealed as A, it kept having characters refer to her as — it makes me want to throw up, typing this — “he/she/it/bitch.” And of course when I woke up this morning, I had dozens and dozens of messages on Twitter and Tumblr referring to Charlotte that way. The writers gave these transphobic people that language, just handed it right to them, and now it’s everywhere. Just like Hanna Marin saying she was a-okay with Emily being gay made a generation of young teenage girls okay with themselves/their friends being gay, Hanna Marin saying “he/she/it/bitch” about a trans woman makes it okay for young teenage girls to say that about trans women. Even inside the show, they were misnaming and misgendering Charlotte after she made it clear who she was.
And here my worry has come to fruition because the show’s official Twitter is using a line of dialogue directly from an episode to perpetuate the horrifically transphobic idea that transgender women are not women, and that it’s okay to refer to them as “he/she/it.” How does that kind of thing play out in the real world? Well, just this morning, an NBC News story revealed that a U.S. Marine violently choked a transgender woman during oral sex when he discovered that she was transgender. NBC News repeatedly refers to the transgender woman as “a transgender” and “a Filipino transgender,” despite the fact that GLAAD has released dozens of free media resources to help news organizations understand how using the word “transgender” as a noun instead of an adjective is reductive and dehumanizing, and thus contributes to violence against trans people. The same thing is true when referring to a transgender person by the wrong pronoun, or worse, as “it.”
The outcry against the tweet was swift and ABC Family took it down within an hour, but replaced it with the same graphic and different text, despite the fact that the graphic misgenders Charlotte DiLaurentis. Once a trans person comes out, it is harmful and hurtful to refer to them with the wrong pronoun, even if you are referring to them before they came out as trans.
They also put the graphic up on Facebook. Many commenters who spoke out against the graphic due to misgendering — including myself — saw our responses deleted.
Screenshots courtesy of Catherine, who was also banned from commenting on PLL’s official Facebook page.
While comments complaining about the reveal for reasons other than transphobia, or comments that stripped Charlotte of her humanity were left untouched.
I have no interest in participating in callout culture. I have no interest in scoring points or raging for catharsis or having my ego stroked. My interest is in educating Pretty Little Liars’ viewers, writers, social media team, etc. about the transgender community to combat some of the more problematic elements of the finale. For example:
Our trans editor, Mey Rude, talked through this episode with me last night for a long time. I’m going to amplify all her thoughts and feelings here. (And as we continue to discuss this episode, I encourage us all to remember that when trans women speak to trans issues, it it the job of non-trans folks to be quiet and listen.) The hands down most damaging trope about trans women is that they are deceitful. That they get into romantic relationships by lying about who they are, by withholding information, and tricking people into loving them. Many, many people truly believe this lie and use it to justify murdering, and sexually and physically abusing trans women. That’s a real life one-to-one correlation. The media portrays trans women as deceptive monsters; real life people kill and beat real life trans women.
That Charlotte DiLaurentis seduced her own brother under false pretenses is an egregious storytelling offense. The “deceitful trans person” and “depraved transgender” trope are used more often than not when trans people are represented on television and in film, as we’ve seen in shows and movies including but certainly not limited to Glee, The Crying Game, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Family Guy, and Lost Girl. This is how the media teaches us to hate and fear transgender people. The result is deadly.
You can see the scariness of this trope manifesting itself in the U.S. Marine story I shared above, and in the majority of the other attacks on trans people recorded in the U.S. over the last several years.
What I said to Riese during the finale is still my goal. The question I am asking is: How can we turn this into a teaching moment? How can we help people understand and embrace the transgender community so they don’t contribute to a culture that condones perpetual and horrific violence against trans people? I work for the most popular queer/feminist website on the internet. We won a GLAAD Award this year. But our voice is so small compared to the voice of Pretty Little Liars. 35,000 people read my Pretty Little Liars recap. Three million people watched the finale. How can Pretty Little Liars’ writers/producers and ABC Family executives amplify our voice – one of truth and compassion – to educate the hearts and minds of the people we’ll never, ever reach?
I think we start by reaching out to the show’s creative team – all of whom want to do good in this world and spread love in this world and tell stories that change things for the better, I believe that truly – and ask them to make sure they’re educated on the struggles facing the transgender community, the storytelling tropes that damage the transgender community, guidelines for speaking about trans people. I think we ask them to avoid those mistakes in the future and to be honest about those mistakes in the past. I think we ask them to address these things on the air, either in the show or a special episode about the show, where they can reach the masses who probably internalized some negative, damaging stereotypes during the finale. I think we ask them to consult with actual trans people. I think we ask ABC Family and its official social media accounts to learn how to speak about trans issues and to apologize when they make mistakes and to not silence trans people and trans allies when they’re pointing out harmful content.
I think we teach people how to do good and then insist that they join us in doing good. Help me, won’t you? Spread this word, have this conversation, plead for change.
You can read my full recap here and watch the HuffPo Live segment I participated in after the finale here.
There is a lot of evidence out there pointing to Wren being A, and I believe Marlene did intend him to be. But due to Julian’s other work commitments, he wasn’t able to film anything for PLL, and with the fans getting restless and desperate for answers, Marlene had to find an alternate reveal. Enter Charles.
Previous story lines and plots had been abandoned and instead Marlene has tried to make Charles happen (cue Mean Girls joke). But Marlene has not accounted for her fans. How much time they spend on theories and attention to the little details- because Marlene and the writers are always telling us that nothing is a coincidence and everything is a clue.
And even if further down the track Wren is revealed to be Uber A or some lager bad guy, I’d feel like it is a total cop-out. There is no erasing the horror that is Charles and the missed opportunity that was Wren.
Exactly, you can’t come back from this.
This was an interview with Marlene before the season 4B finale. Marlene says we have seen Black Widow without a costume on in season 4. But we didn’t meet Sara Harvey until season 6 episode 1. This is just proof the writers didn’t have this planned “from the beginning”.
Ugh. She lies in every. single. interview.
Aria’s Cheeseburger
Many have speculated about the fact that Aria ordered a cheeseburger in episode 1x01, & that it was strange because she’s supposed to be a vegetarian.
Well, in honor of trying to fill as many plot holes as possible, I think I just filled this one (which may actually be the first plot hole ever on the show):
Explanation: She probably already ate, then ordered the cheeseburger to bring back for Mike.
Now it makes sense :-) … Well, at least that plot hole does.
5 Years, Still Unanswered
Season 1 Episode 11 “Moments Later”:
Season 4 Episode 13 “Grave New World”:
Marlene’s Interviews Pre 6x10:
Season 6 Episode 10 “Game Over, Charles”:
We find out that:
-Mona mistook Bethany for Ali.
-Charlotte mistook Ali for Bethany.
-Melissa buries Bethany.
-Jessica buries Ali.
So uh, what did the 4 Liars know? Come to find out, they knew absolutely nothing, nor had ANYTHING to do with That Night. The only one who tied into it at all was Spencer (who just argued with Alison like any normal day).
What did Hanna know? Nothing.
What did Aria know? Nothing.
What did Emily know? Nothing.
What did Spencer know? Nothing, thanks to the drugs.
So basically, the 4 of them combined knew jack shit.

Happy One Week Anniversary to the “Summer Episode of Answers Plot Holes”
If you couldn’t tell, I’m still bitter.
Also, one thing I don't understand was that in 6x01 it was clearing a MAN and spencer said He seemed familiar... No way that person and "A" were the same person. He was a bit taller than Spencer too. Vanessa is not. It just makes no sense to me at all...
It doesn’t make sense to me either! I think it was before the dollhouse they said that the actor who was A was actually playing that role at that point, rather than a stand-in.
The thing is, Vanessa would be wearing the suit and mask and everything, and is 1,63 m. Troian was in her prom dress and most likely in heels, and she is 1,73 m.
No way this is Vanessa. I guess they didn’t get the height right since it would to be too big of a clue. I also don’t see why Charlotte would dress up in a suit, why would she remind herself so much of the Charles-identity?
In the end I think they have probably shot at least two different finales, and they chose this one with all the plotholes that come with it!
Hanna's scholarship
Cece/Charlotte knows everything about the liars including Hanna’s issues with her dad.
She found out that Hanna’s dad decided to pay for Kate’s college instead of Hanna’s.
Also she noticed that when the liars escaped the dollhouse Hanna’s dad didn’t come see her once.
Mr.D never came to visit Cece/Charlotte in Radley, didn’t accept her as transgender, and was the reason she got sent to Radley in the first place.
So when she realized she loved the liars, she paid for Hanna’s college since her dad wouldn’t since they both have issues with their fathers
Answered and unanswered questions after watching 6A (finale spoilers obviously)
Another look at my questions post after 6A! Added new questions as well!

67. Why did Charles feel familiar to Spencer in the dollhouse, even though she barely knew Cece? 68. Why did they give us the information of Andrew being adopted, even though it was never mentioned again? 69. Why did the writers insist on using the name Black Widow instead of Black Veil, even though it is Sara Harvey? 70. Why did Sara help Charlotte? 71. Why did Charlotte build the dollhouse? 72. How did Charlotte have the opportunity to build the dollhouse? 73. Why did they send Clark, an undercover cop, after Aria (instead of the Dilaurentis family or the other liars)? 74. Why was Charlotte prom queen at Rosewood High, despite not going there? 75. Why was Melissa talking to Bethany that night, and why did she never mention that? 76. Why didn’t Melissa check Bethany’s body, even though she knew Alison and Bethany were wearing the same outfit that night? 77. Who killed mrs. Dilaurentis? Feel free to add any questions I missed!
OK, Let’s get this straight
Things most people are upset about:
Sara Harvey as Red Coat/Black Veil with an unknown motive, after appearing in 9 episodes
The thought that Cece dated Jason, even if it wasn’t romantic
Plot holes such as
A texts, timeline, and multiple unanswered questions
Being lied to about
the possibility of Charles being transgender
things we (assumed) would be addressed
How Marlene, other writers and directors (esp. Norman) are handling this
How rushed the episode was, and how low quality it was made
Marlene having to answer questions in an outside interview
Things most people are NOT upset about:
Cece as A (the clues were all there, and she was a suspect of mine)
Charles/Cece being transgender (it had crossed my mind as well)
I feel there is a lot of misunderstanding going on within the PLL community and I hope this clears some things up
there’s a good chance Wayne is dead in the time jump😭
Most likely. There’s a Gold Star Service Flag hanging in the window.

Can someone please explain to me how the fuck Marion was alive & well when Toby & Ali were both teenagers (flashback scene from 4x01), yet Bethany Young supposedly pushed her off the roof at Radley when Charles was only a kid. Isn’t Charles older than both Toby & Ali? What a huge plot hole. I’m annoyed.
Amen. This episode had plot holes so big you could drive a truck through them.
I DONT UNDERSTAND
PLL logic
prom queen of a school you never attended…right
How the Summer Finale should have gone.
A list of plot holes in "Game Over Charles":
1. CeCe was prom queen, but she never attended rosewood high?
2. Generally the idea of CeCe knowingly dating her brother. Not befriending, but actually dating.
3. If CeCe was still a patient at Radley when she met the girls, then how did she get her job at Diva Dish?
4. If she was a patient at Radley while attending U Penn, then how in the hell did she have a room mate when she went to U Penn? If the room mate was just a person she hired, then why have her tell the girls that she blamed them and Ali for her getting kicked out of U Penn.
5. How was she free to spend time in cape may, at pubs with Ali, etc. if she was still a patient at Radley?
6. If Jessica was protecting CeCe, then why bother telling the girls that she didn’t want Ali and CeCe spending time together. If she was protecting CeCe, why cast any suspicious light on her at all?
7. Literally everything about Mona tracking Ali, and knowing how to navigate pretty much all of the Carissimi tech. And having an ice pick for a shoe.
8. The piss poor explanation of how CeCe has the money to fund ‘A’ projects.
9. The extremely confusing age Difference between when CeCe said Marion died, and when we know she did.
10. How people just got out on to the roof at Radley with no problem. Like, Roof access is a good idea for a mass group of unstable patients.
11. Tanner working for CeCe. That requires a great deal of proof and back story.
12. Literally everything about Sara as Red Coat/ Black widow.
13. The entire lack of explanation about why Bethany pushed Marion. That argument took like 5 seconds and escalated from no where.
14. The camera that is meant to be the live feed that the girls are watching, is behind CeCe on the wall. But they see CeCe on the monitor. And CeCe is moving around the room. There are cameras all over the room, but CeCe is in the room, Mona is in the monitor room, and Sara is at Radley. So who the fuck is changing the camera angles to always be on CeCe.
15. Why did you continue being A after you found Ali?- “Cause the game is a drug.” I’ve literally seen stories written by 12 year olds with better explanations than this.
16. You just don’t get day passes out of asylums to attend classes 45 minutes away in Philadelphia.
17. Either the DiLaurentis family is really, really, really wealthy… Or Wilden was really cheap to buy off.
18. Several times Mrs. D either made large cash withdrawals, or syphoned money from a charity, and neither her husband or said charity ever noticed.
Honestly this is probably just part 1.
They said Bethany had Intermittent Explosive Disorder
they literally called her an IED…
Just a reminder of the things we’ve been promised in tonight’s finale.
*I want to look back on this after the episode and see what we actually got and what we didn’t*
- We will see the first scenes from the time jump at the end of the episode.
- Ali will learn a lot of things about the Dilaurentis family
- The Charles reveal will happen within the first 20 minutes of the episode.
- One or more People may die in the episode.
- There is a possibility someone is Alive
- Something about Sara will be ‘shocking’
- A/ Charles is someone Alison and the girls know - Someone they would least expect to be ‘A’ and it rocks the girls’ world.
- Everything will make sense. And ties together beautifully. But the episode will be dark and emotional.
-A is someone we’ve seen before, both unmasked and masked, he is not a random character and has been in 5 episodes, -A is under 50 and is not a parent, -A has many disguises and is not one of the liars.
- There are a few secrets about Alison and we’ll learn about them.
- We will see dead people in the finale. And the Charles reveal will explain how he has a “personal connection” to each of the girls.
- The Carissimi group will be discussed and we will discover how they link to the girls and Charles and also Mrs. D. Also Rhys Matthews’ role will be unveiled.
- We will discover Who hit Alison over the head? Who killed Bethany? Who killed Toby’s mom? Who is Red Coat? Who is Black Widow? and Why -A became -A, and also how -A has so much money.
- There is one big shocker that does have to do with Mona
- We should prepare Kleenex for the finale because it makes her cry every-time she see’s it.
- Red Coat will be in the finale
- We will find out who Charles is at the exact same time as the liars
- We will see the Yellow Top again in the finale
- We will learn more about Marion
- We may learn more about Sydney/ Jenna/ Mona
- We will learn why A has been targeting the PLLs all of this time
- And we will learn the story of why Charles became A
- We will get closure on Toby’s mother
- We’ll get answers about the Lodge fire from 3x24
- We’ll get to see Bethany Young’s face (Mar then said this was a hard question to answer so this may not happen)
- Emison will have a ‘sweet’ moment
- Charles’ revenge or whatever he’s looking for, whatever makes him want to be ‘A’ – has been happening for way longer than Mona’s motives for being ‘A’ were. They are way bigger than anyone could’ve ever imagined. There will be more on that and it’s pretty crazy! Charles has been planning this thing for a lot longer than when Mona was even wearing the hoodie.
- We will know who all of the -A team are by the end of 6x10
