[it’s late evening when Robbie hears a knock on his door. It’s… strange. And unexpected, it’s not like Robbie invited anyone over, and most people tend to at least give some forewarning.

As he looks through the peephole, he can see a very frazzled and tired looking Basra. Opening up the door he can see how… off they look. Their face looks gaunt and they clearly have a few injuries everywhere. They don’t seem to have fully registered the door opening until they see Robbie, at which point they blink at him, before greeting him quietly.]

“hi..! I’m back…”

[their voice sounds hoarse and strained, like it’s either been unused for a while, or like they’re very dehydrated] - @basra-of-the-crows

Jesus—Bas, are you alright?! Come in, come in.

[He ushers them in and to a sofa in his living room. The room is cramped but Robbie attention is squarely focused on the deteriorated individual before him. They sit down and he asks;]

Do you want a cuppa? You sound like you need one bad.

“I- define alright..? I managed to get some of my injuries bandaged and managed to make it out of the… field I suppose, but-“ [they cough] “not much else working in my favor… the crows are back though, so that’s something…”

[Basra hums, walking slowly in, wincing occasionally every time they take a step using their bad ankle, but manage to make it to the couch without too many issues.

Basra takes in a deep breath, and nods, it takes them a few moments to gather up enough energy to actually speak]

"...yes please, that'd be great… how’s everything been while I was gone..?”

[they start to pick at the edge of some of their bandages, not enough to take them off, but it’s still probably not a great idea.]

[Robbie is in the kitchen a room over, speaking loudly as to be heard. He doesn't know how to address Basras state without making them uncomfortable, so instead he just rambles.]

Jon keeps talking about some "Jane Prentiss", and... I think I know her? Like, proper know. I think he used to work together a while back but I haven't told the crew yet. The spooky stuff is not my calibre, so I try to keep divorced from the institutes business. Now,

“Mmmm from what I’ve heard from Gerry even ‘typical archive stuff’ tends to be batshit insane anyways… and worms..? Like I get that the archives are underground but unless one of the walls are rotting then there shouldn’t be any worms getting through… might be worth getting a contractor to check out…”

[Basra simply listens on the couch occasionally commenting on something that Robbie says before they freeze]

“What- like you know the… changed(?) version of her or like… who she was before? And also… shit dude is that why you ended up in the institute proper? … honestly I’d say stay out of it as much as you can but also like… maybe tell them what you know? Institute business is a toxic marriage that I have no interest in even thinking of joining… but given the current circumstances my hand might be forced soon…”

[Basra takes the mug from Robbie, thanking him with a nod, before blowing on it a bit and taking a sip]

“Thank you for the tea dude… I’m okay with talkin’ about it… it’s just… a weird story. Like- you remember the note I sent you a while back about going somewhere to find where my crows went, right?”

[they sound as if they regret the actions that they’ve taken, pure exhaustion evident in their voice, but still seemingly unwilling to stop themself from explaining]

Oh, the note! I got it a while back, but at the time I guess I wasn't that concerned. I mean, you kind of have spooky stuff going on all the time—if I'd known it'd have you like this I'd have atleast tried to intervene. Now,

I'm gonna make myself a cup, but about Jane—

[Robbie enters the kitchen,]

it must have been... 2014? 2015? Not sure, but it was in a crystal and tarot shop near archway. I'd just moved and was really into the stuff, so it was kinda perfect. Jane worked there too. I'm not sure what you mean by "changed" but I guess she was kinda creepy. Invited me for a picnic once and she drank a little too much wine. Might have been a date if I'm being honest but I couldn't really tell.

Then there was... don't really want to talk about it. Gives me the creeps. Wasn't what brought me there but I guess I had it in the back of my mind at the time. Probably gonna have to yap about it to Jon at some point but he has a way of getting people to speak. Oh, I meant to ask—

[Robbies peeks his head into the sitting room to look at Basra,]

are your birds alright? I know you love them to bits.

“I mean… I have to admit that I wasn’t really all that worried when I first left either… reality kicked in when I managed to walk into a field that didn’t exist. Ironic really… but I appreciate the sentiment.”

“I mean yeah- as much as people like to discredit that sorta stuff sometimes you just gotta go through the weird phase to see the next days… creepy as in like- monster creepy or socially creepy? … wait are dates not pre established as being dates before you go on em?? Don’t you have to like- prepare for that sorta thing?

Ehhh say what you’re comfy sharin’, I’m just a guest anyways… and some interactions stick more than others. Especially the more… disturbing ones… but I mean hell yeah go ahead and give a statement if you want, heard giving one was exhausting tho so I’d say go on a day off or at the end of the day, and call me if you need someone to pick you up.”

[basra peers back at Robbie, they’ve managed to shift to a strange sitting position, even with their admittedly limited mobility caused by their bandages]

“I do love them! And I think they’re mostly fine? They got out before I did, one of the older crows stuck with me but he’s alright. But when I went to where I thought they were it was just… a woman, long white hair, shepherd’s crook in hand- like think of a storybook female shepherd. That’s what she looked like, and she gloats about how she’s got my crows n shit. So I lunged. Got smacked, bruised a couple ribs and went for it again cause I’m not gonna let some random woman steal my family without consequence.

And then she hits me with the crook and I’m just- gone. She’s gone, vex is gone and all that’s left around me is wide open field and a singular crow. I tried to make my way back but I walked for miles without a single other person in sight. That’s why I’ve been gone for a month… had to have Cass drag my ass back to London… ‘s how I got this injured in the first place”

[they gesture at their legs, one is in a splint, the other is covered in bandages all the way from mid shin to their ankle, their gaze seems to be distant for a moment, before they shake their head and come back to themselves]

“But hey! I’m back now and my flock is basically all back here! Just talking time to heal now I suppose.”

[Robbie has sat down and as Basra tells their story he finds himself leaning back in disbelief. A small part of him wants to mentally discard Basras story as some drug addled hallucination—but an even bigger part feels shame for even thinking that the person before him is lying. Their body is broken and bruised and it's obvious that—endless field and evil shepard aside—Basra needs support.]

That sounds rough—like, real rough. Do need to go to the hospital? A place to stay? I can clean up this room and get out a duvet for the couch if you need it. Not sure about the flock, but they'll settle somewhere.

Also, and you can absolutely not answer this I'd completely understand, but... would you know vaguely where you "re-emerged"? Like, after she hit you?

While Robbie is cleaning, there's a young man that looks barely out of his teens who pauses at the edge of where he's mopped. It looks like he's mentally buffering for a second.

"Oh. Uh. Am I allowed to walk over this for a bit?"

I mean... at least he's asking permission, but that's a really weird question to ask.

Yeah, theres only really the one—Jon, whose head archivist. Is that weird? Never much cared for academia so I don't really get how this place is meant to be run outside of "give us your spook stories".

I'd either give the folders to Jon or Sasha, and I think Jons doing a statement right now so I'd recommend not interruptin' him—he doesn't take it very well. Sasha just in the break room though, so I'd hand it off to her.

As for our favourite planet — of course it's Mars! So many sci-fi books are about it, Soviet ones included! And as much as people adore the Moon... Mars will always be №1 in the list of planets for colonization.

I personally don't have a favourite planet, but I'm hopelessly in love with Canes Venatici constellation. It has: 1) a binary star as its brightest one (and I love binary stars); 2) a star similar to the Sun as their second brightest one; 3) a Giant Void (how cool is that??); 4) one of the most massive black holes (sick!!!). Also — doggies!!

Honestly I’ve recently been more of a comet and orbital moon typa person… I think I truly did adore Saturn and Uranus as a child tho. Had a bit of a fascination with the sky and stars… just- the observation of them and their properties… later got very fixated on the mythological contexts and symbolism in their use and uh- I’m getting side tracked again-

Major lack of scars, but they'd got the hair down pretty accurate. Only button up they have is buttoned the whole way up so I just used my usual out of work outfit.

I love the planets—never got fully into astrology but have had friends who were all over the stuff. If we're counting dwarf planets I'm partial to Pluto but otherwise I'd say Uranus.

I went to investigate a statement at the end of the day today, and thing did NOT go like normal... I saw this weird... woman? she looked sick. not just sick. she looked... decayed, or infested. I don't know what was wrong with her. she started to approach me, but then stopped. I wasn't going to stick around, so I left as fast as I could. embarrassingly I dropped my phone, but strangely enough I found it on my bedside table just an hour ago? I genuinely have no clue how it got there, because I distinctly remember dropping it as I was leaving out the window... this whole thing is so weird I really hope she didn't follow me or anything aurghh

[Basra all but drags Robbie over to a chair, where they had him an activated charcoal tablet at a glass of water, before dialing poison control and trying to explain what exactly happened]

“Can you drink that? It might help soak up some of the caffeine… BUT DUDE A SHOT’S WORTH INTO A LARGE WATER BOTTLE WOULD BE ENOUGH TO MAKE A VERY CONCENTRATED CUP OF COFFEE WHAT WERE YOU THINKING???”

[Robbie brings the glass to his mouth with two shakey hands and takes a few gulps. He's not completely sure what the tablet was—he's not completely sure of anything right now—but he trusts them. His head is pounding, his heart is thudding out of his chest and he speaks in short breaks;]

I—I think... shot wise? Maybe like... four? Five?? God.. that stuff was... brewed to kill, huh?

I tried it because I... I wanted to get my kitchen clean in o–one go, but—[huff]—I only got like 12 minutes in before I.. I threw up and ran here.

“I mean… it was some damn concentrated coffee mate, you’re supposed to water cold brew down anyway, and this was tripple brewed. Quite literally instant heart attack potion at the dose you took… I mean at that point I’m fairly sure actual crack is safer for you- don’t quote me on that tho-“

[Basra pats their back as they drink, eventually taking another bottle and mixing some electrolytes into it, and handing it to Robbie]

[it’s one of those artificial orange flavored electrolytes, where you can’t really tell if it’s sweet or salty, but it’s not bad enough to make you nauseous]

“It’s probably a good thing you came here when you did man.. you were sweating bullets and looked like you were about to collapse. The pill I gave you was activated charcoal, it should help absorb some of the caffeine in your stomach before it goes into your bloodstream, but it might interfere with blood pressure medication if you take that… also- dude caffeine pills exist in a safer dose than this does for a reason- let me know if you need to lie down though…”

[Basra looks genuinely concerned for their friend’s wellbeing, somehow looking like they’re about to lecture Robbie and like they want to give him a break]

[His mind feels back on track—or at least a smidge better. The electrolytes help and his eyes almost don't hurt. His chest ached but knowing everything was going to be fine made it fade gradually, bit by bit. It's taking time, but it's working.]

[He looked up at her from the chair he was sat in and felt a deep admiration. His second choice for health-emergency caller was going to be Martin but he's glad he stuck with them. That would have resulted in two heart attacks.]

I think in a bit I'll head back to my place. I... I'll pop by the chemist and grab some of those coal things then call out of work tomorrow. Jon will not be happy.

[Basra all but drags Robbie over to a chair, where they had him an activated charcoal tablet at a glass of water, before dialing poison control and trying to explain what exactly happened]

[Robbie brings the glass to his mouth with two shakey hands and takes a few gulps. He's not completely sure what the tablet was—he's not completely sure of anything right now—but he trusts them. His head is pounding, his heart is thudding out of his chest and he speaks in short breaks;]

I—I think... shot wise? Maybe like... four? Five?? God.. that stuff was... brewed to kill, huh?

I tried it because I... I wanted to get my kitchen clean in o–one go, but—[huff]—I only got like 12 minutes in before I.. I threw up and ran here.
