secret organizations for studying paranormal phenomena are always calling the creatures they find like "specimen 58008" or some fake latin taxonomy or something vague and ominous like "the red angel" or whatever and thats all well and good but i want a story about a bunch of cryptozoologists going around naming things the way people name like actual birds and lizards and shit.
i want to get lost in the woods and meet the ring-tailed tree creeper and roger's false elk. i want a character who is desperate to prove this monster is actually a distinct species from that very similar looking monster so they can name it after themself. i want two field researchers narrowly escaping an encounter with some ten foot tall thing made of carnivorous vines and one of them is like wow wait til the guys back at the lab hear we got that close to a lesser thorn-backed bone eater đ and the other scientist is like.,...... đ°lesser?
thank you for appreciating my boobs calculator joke but the real overlooked gem of this post is rogers false elk. basically this entire post was just an excuse to come up with a hypothetical monster called rogers false elk. its just so pleasing to me. does nobody care him? does nobody but me care for rogers false elk?
ânever kill yourselfâ is such a funny phrase to me that i think itâs accidently started working. its like an affrimation. say ânever kill yourselfâ enough times as a joke and maybe you wonât try to kill yourself over minor inconviences anymore
I fucking hate it here
For those of you with android devices, you can use the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) standalone app control program to get rid of all the bloatware, data mining, and AI crap - no coding needed!
save
There are also Android-based alternatives like GrapheneOS and LineageOS, which are pretty easy to install. These are unfortunately available for a more limited range of devices (Graphene is ironically Pixel only, while Lineage supports more), but it's very worth checking out whether one of them might work for your phone.
GrapheneOS is a security and privacy focused mobile OS with Android app compatibility.
LineageOS Android Distribution
Typing this from Graphene now, in fact. But, both of those take the Android Open Source Project, without all the bloatware--and largely de-Google the whole thing. They give you much more control over privacy and what the apps you choose to install can do and access on your phone.
I know Graphene sandboxes everything, including the optionally installed Google Play Services which a lot of apps unfortunately require to run. (Lineage uses an alternative to Play Services instead.) So, you can install what would normally be unacceptably intrusive apps and just lock them away from pulling any funny shit with your data, or phoning home. Including the couple of Google things I do still keep around.
I also prefer running much more transparent, privacy-respecting open source apps where possible. Besides the transparency, I'd rather avoid the shitty tech corps entirely where I can. There are pretty good alternatives available for a lot of the usual suspects.
AlternativeTo lets you find apps and software for Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad, Android, Android Tablets, Web Apps, Online, Windows Tab
An alternative app store:
F-Droid is an installable catalogue of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) applications for the Android platform. The client makes it easy
Also just going to leave this here.
Continuing the legacy of Vanced.
đ Application to use ReVanced on Android . Contribute to ReVanced/revanced-manager development by creating an account on GitHub.
This lets you pretty easily patch some of the worst offender corporate apps to make them behave better.
#i like to think data took him all the way to the brig tossed him in and left#and then came back 60 seconds later and was like âi believe i have successfully played a âpractical jokeâ on you :)â#riker loses it & claps him on the back like âwow. good job u rly had me going. dont ever fucking do that againâ Perfect.
Actually itâs 73 seconds. Data, knowing something of how human minds work, estimates that Riker will give him 60 seconds to come back (because humans prefer âround numbersâ, however arbitrary the units). After 60 seconds it will take 4 seconds for Riker to fully process the conclusion that Data is, in fact, not coming back after all, and an additional 9 seconds to build to the optimum level of anxiety.Â
After all, comedy is timing.
I told my friend that tumblr would love her shirt, don't let me down guys
WHERE CAN I BUY THIS
i just tried cutting a carrot with a carrot -_-
hey @peel-a-potato-with-a-potato is this your origin post?
Itâs not! However, itâs got the right idea!
I canât find the original post, that was like 10 years ago, but it was talking about depression being like trying to peel a potato with another potato. And then someone asks why you donât try a peeler, and they hand you yet another potato.
that's very insightful, and thank you for sharing. :)
if youâre constantly struggling to keep your weight down and you gain easily, youâre probably not at your bodyâs natural set point weight.Â
the set point is range of about 10 lbs where your body is in an energy balanced state, and it will fight to stay in that range. if youâre below it, youâll gain easily; if youâre above it (in our culture this is rare except in certain weight specific sports) youâll lose easily.Â
so if for example i say that calories in excess of your energy needs would never go âstraight to your thighsâ, but would be burned off by processes like non-exercise activity thermogenesis, and you think âwell i know from experience that if i eat more i gain weightâ, youâre very likely under your bodyâs set point weight, and probably in an energy deficit.Â
weight suppression can work in the short term, but in the long term all of your metabolic pathways will coordinate to pull your body back up to its set point range.
your choice is either to fight that long, unhealthy, and doomed battle for weight suppression, or to accept the weight your body sits at naturally and get on with living.
You can read more by checking the âset point theoryâ tag on my blog.
Iâll add to this that the only way to permanently change this set point (without drugs) is to maintain the new weight for a long period of time, over a year.
Thatâs a myth. The data show exactly the opposite, actually. Weight suppression leads to additional weight gain in the vast majority of cases, and in the extremely few cases in which it doesnât, the behaviors required to maintain the lower weight typically meet the criteria for a clinical eating disorder (and would be dxâd as such in a thin person).
The National Weight Control Registry purports to study successful long term weight loss (15kg for over a year) in a large sample size, but its actual success rate is far worse than the standard 5% estimated in most literature⌠significant weight loss was maintained by their subjects for over a year at a rate of .001%.Â
The data also show that even in âsuccessfulâ one year cases, 2/3 of the lost weight is regained within 2 years, and all of it has been regained within 5 years.
You can alter your genetically programmed set point weight, sure. But upward, not downward. And among the very few people who actively maintain weight suppression long term, most do so at great cost to their overall well being. And since lower weight doesnât improve health status anyway, why would you do that to yourself?
i know i encourage people to learn tree ID and bird ID and love the world around them but the one thing i never warn ppl about is how dramatically it narrows your suspension of belief when youâre watching a tv show filmed thousands of miles from where itâs supposed to take place.
was going bananas watching a show set in Oregon but they didnât edit out a constant chorus of eastern pheobes in the background, but i persevered. bc one i donât care THAT much and 2 itâs kinda a fun part of the je ne sais quoi especially if the show sort of sucks
but i do have my limits and when i was watching a show set in northern Ohio, filmed in BC I actually quit it permanently when the characters walked into a stand of coastal douglas firs.
frustrated further when i complained about this and someone from the PNW was like âyeah Ohio is so flat and nothing that was too obvious.â
âď¸northern Ohio sits on one of the great lakes and was once home to one of the largest wetlands/swamps on the continent. colonial agriculture devastated it but its remnants have persevered. my issue was not that BC was too beautiful to be Ohio. Itâs that Ohioâs beauty was not showcased.
STORY I NEED YOU TO READ THIS ARTICLE THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST INSANE EXAMPLES OF THIS PHENOMENON AND I LOVE HOW THE AUTHOR DESCENDS INTO THE DEPTHS OF MADNESS OVER IT.
The story behind cinemaâs most mysterious bird.
