Aftermath
broadswordandpistol:
Alvin put the rest of the tools away, then sat back down to pick at the cooling remains of his dinner. He hadnāt been hungry much lately. Maybe he should have taken himself off somewhere else, but he found himself loath to leave the small flash of companionship, strained though it was.
He only half-watched the kid. He was fairly sure Jude had read that book a dozen times already over the course of their journey. What heād find in it on a thirteenth reading, Alvin would be hard pressed to say. More likely it was an excuse to sit here. He didnāt want to think about why.
Another bite, and then another. Wasnāt much, but it would keep him going for another day, at least. His fork abruptly stilled at the question.
āNo!ā The word came out too quickly, and he set the fork down too fast. Shit. It was one thing to keep that feeling coiled inside you, where no one else could see it gnawing away. Something else entirely when someone dragged its ugly carcass out into the air. He forced a smile.Ā
āHell of a time to ask that, kid. Youāre not trying to keep me from coming along, are you?ā
He couldnāt answer. If Alvin truly intended to be killed in their assault on Maxwell, blaming him didnāt really work. Jude had already figured that at the very least, he could be killed. Easily. If Alvin wanted this to be the way he died, instead of straight out suicide, how could he blame him? He at least had the strength to try to be heroic while facing utter demise, something rather commendable considering his past. Meanwhile, Jude was leading every one of his friends to undeniable slaughter. He knew the group would object to him going alone, of course, but didnāt he have a duty to only get himself killed? What was the point of getting everyone killed if he could learn the truth by himself and be killed instead?
Back to twiddling his thumbs. It was a nervous habit, Jude knew, and Alvin must know at this point that it meant he was falling back into his indecision. It wasnāt a side he wanted anyone to see, most of all Alvin. He must already have enough problems on his shoulders without seeing his own so-called leader falter in what he claimed he was so sure of.Ā
He sighed, took a few breaths. Back when he had first entered medical school, before his early appointments, this technique had helped him to calm down to the point he could focus on his work without panicking. And while this was a far cry from a simple appointment, it helped nearly just as much.Ā
āIf I left, to face Maxwell alone...would you promise not to tell anyone?ā
It was a rather simple question Jude had asked, but he could imagine the immediate objections that would pour from Alvinās mouth.
āIām being serious, Alvin. No one else needs to do this. I know everyone claims that theyāre absolutely sure about this, but theyāre not. I can see it in their faces every second we get closer to where weāre heading. But I amĀ sure, even if Iām scared. I can do this alone.ā
seleniasongstress:
Tear blinked slightly in surprise. She knew that her having been able to use songs to perform artes was rather well-known, but being called out like that⦠āI am Tear Grants, yes. Can I help you..?ā
āYes, actually. I was told that you could not only preform artes without a mana lobe, but that your ability to preform artes is wildly different from our own. Iām here to ask you about this, if you have the time.ā
He blinked.
āAnd if youāre willing, of course.ā
pocketsizedalchemist:
āIām not short itās just a big world.ā Ed sighed with exasperation and shook his head.Ā āEdward Elric.ā He responded.Ā āā¦Heh, bein an arm aināt the only thing this can do.āĀ
Ed admitted with a pat to the metallic framework. He wasnāt entirely sure he wanted to give away all his secrets yet
āIām sure.ā
The construction of the arm was near genius; the joints not only allowed full mobility, but maybe even an ability to go farther than a normal humanās was capable of. For someone who worked with technology a lot, it was about a dream come true.
āAlthough, I am quite interested in what else thisĀ āarmā can do.ā
Aftermath
broadswordandpistol:
The kidās gentle smile pulled Alvin towards a soft, lopsided one of his own. He didnāt really expect Jude to trust him. Didnāt expect any one to, ever, really. But at least this was a small step away from the dark well of loneliness.
āNaaaah. If I was gonna poison you, Iād have done it long ago.ā Though his words were light, there was a flash of pain in his expression that he banished as quickly as it had arrived.
Did the kid really believe heād do that? Fingers of cold dread squeezed at Alvinās heart. While heād never try to claim that he was a good man, he wasnāt the kind that would poison anyone in cold blood. How far had he fallen?
He forced the thought away. It had been a joke. Heād made it first, no less.Ā āAnd I never cheat at āā There was a substantial pause while Alvin looked up at the sky, as if it might actually know. He dropped his chin back to his hand ruefully. āNever mind. Youāre right. I do.ā
While Jude was putting up a good face, it wasnāt hard to see the worry that lingered underneath it. He had to admire the kidās bravery. It was the least he could do to lighten his load, and he put on a confident grin.Ā
āLetās call it a challenge. Iāve never tried to cheat a god before.ā
A challenge? Although Alvin was very clearly making a joke, Jude was pretty surprised at his audacity to frame their rather precarious situation as a challenge. But that was what Alvin did, and Jude had to admit to himself that it made him feel better about what they were about to try. He did have a knack for doing that, no mater the teamās current opinion of him. He wasnāt sure if that made him more likable or less so, to be honest, but at least Jude wasnāt in a ball in his room, panicking all the time.
He nodded in response to his statement, having no need or no idea how to respond. His eyes turned to the book he had picked up, and seconds passed as he scanned a few pages. Nothing he hadnāt known already, to be honest, but conversation with the other man in the room wasnāt very easy at the moment. His eyes darted up from the book every once in a while to observe what Alvin was doing, surprised he hadnāt left already.
Why did Alvin even want to help them? He claimed that he had nothing left, but Alvin wasnāt one to stick around if he saw no benefit in what he was doing. Heād been with them for days now; it shouldāve only taken a few to realize that Judeās quest was completely suicidal and he had almost no chance of actually coming out alive. But what if he did plan to die, doing this? It was certainly possible, if Alvin really was that far gone.
āDo you want to die, Alvin?ā

Aftermath
broadswordandpistol:
Alvin bit the inside of his cheek at the long moment of silence. What heād said had been the truth, but it was the last thing heād wanted to get away from him. He felt as vulnerable as an insect under a microscope, pulled apart and studied for what made him tick.
The kid got up to put his plate away without a word, shoulders low. Measured and found wanting. Not like that was anything new. Living with being a failure had become routine by now. Alvin finished knotting off the last stitch on the strap, and cut the needle free.
Heād just tossed the backpack onto the tabletop when an arm looped over his shoulders. He glanced up in bewilderment at the unexpected gesture, only to meet JudeāsĀ amber eyes and a strangely-familiar deadpan expression.
āThe real truth is, the ingredients in that meal were undercooked to the point Iām probably going to have stomach pains.ā
Blink.
Blink.
The faintest hint of a smile crossed the mercenaryās face.
āCāmon, kid. Youāre not claiming I tried to poison you after all that.ā The joke was in terrible taste, but it was the material he had to work with. AlvinĀ felt for the edges of what was safe to play with, his small smile strained and tentative.Ā āNext time guess Iāll have to cook up the spud, see if that goes over better.ā
Jude couldnāt help but let a smile crawl onto his face at Alvinās response. Forgoing all pretense of being invested in whatever book he had randomly picked up, he laced his fingers under his chin, smiling gently at Alvin. Seeing his-all-too-rare-nowadays smile made him feel more at ease than he had been for a while, he had to admit. So the fact that Alvin was joking around again almost made it seem like things were back to normal.
But not completely, of course.
He still had to maintain some semblance of distrust, or the group would only consider him to be naively ignoring Alvinās...ātendenciesā again. And especially with Milla gone now, he couldnāt afford that luxury of innocence anymore. But making Alvin feel like no one liked him wasnāt really the answer to that particularly recurring problem either.Ā
So he could at least afford the luxury of making him feel at home.
āHey, I wouldnāt exactly put it over you to poison me at this point. Iām pretty sure you cheat at everything you possibly can.ā
The banter made it easier to stomach what was coming up. Jude had been scared this entire journey, but facing the god of their world? He had never been more terrified of anything in his entire life. But seeing Alvin suck it up for everyone, once again taking all of the groupās worries onto himself? It gave him a little confidence again.
āBesides, Iām the one dragging you out to face a god.ā
(Alright, the threeish days of no internet starts now. See ya guys.)
seleniasongstress:
Tear turned around and looked at the young man; her cheeks reddening at his compliment.Ā āT-thank you. May I help you with anything?ā
āYes, I do have a question for you.ā He had heard of a singer gifted with the power to sing to create artes, a concept that baffled his mind.Ā āYou are Tear Grants, correct?ā
āDid you shrink since I last saw you?ā
Height-related {Sentence Starters}
Ā Ā Ā ā IĀ know Iām a couple inches off, but thereās no reason for you to comment the gap like that.Ā ā Leia huffs, folding her arms. Eyes shut before cracking one open to look at how the other was reacting. Only to break into a smile.Ā ā And couldnāt you at leastĀ consider the fact that maybeĀ youāve grown?Ā ā
āBut if I donāt make fun of your height, who will?ā His face was deadpan; whether he was joking or not was a complete mystery.Ā
āAnd you know itās only been a year. Iāve always been short.ā It was true; it was actually why he was so often targeted for bullying when he was a kid.Ā
