Hey there lovely people 👋🏼,

Here’s what our team is up to:

We are creating a set of filters for each team. Where you take photos of your food, or people, or people with food, or yourself with food, uhm, whatever you want actually 🙃.

Cool? Cool.

You’d receive a lovely pack with our filters in it at the event. It includes 2 sets of filters. One colour, the other ‘material’. There’s also the instructions you see above which tells you what to do. So no worries! You then just take photos with those filters, use either, or BOTH (we spent time considering the materials that went into this)! 

Ok, so now what?

Oh, just post it on tumblr with a hashtag of #core2639gram

Note the extra gram at the end, this helps to differentiate the photo from the other posts. Also, it would help that you post to tumblr as we’ll use the tag as a way to form a compilation of this little collection.

Then pass it on to your teammate.

Ask Me Anything! Reflection

When we were first introduced to this task, I thought wow, I might just end up interviewing my friend. The designers/creatives I know are all huge, monolithic figures (to me at least).

But when I thought about it, it is just sending an email, requesting for their time to respond to five questions.

It is surprisingly easy. Though the number one on my list did reply, only to decline being interviewed. Which is quite alright, she was number one for a reason. Though being able to interview her would be quite an eye-opener for me.

When crafting the questions, I realise that creating thoughtful questions can be challenging. There are certain topics where you do not want to broach so as to not offend your interviewee. So finding the right balance took a little finesse.

When Aaron replied me, quite promptly and with his energy, I was elated. Over the moon. I have watched his videos before and could have never imagined myself contacting him then.

The creation of the medium of choice (zine) took a lot of consideration too. As I wanted to ensure that my final product had to be representative of his work, I knew I had to incorporate elements of his work and style and merge that with my own style. He has a rather bold and clean style. To match that with my zine, it was only logical. Thankfully, there are rather similar, though come to think about it, if it was different, how great would that be?

Next was the killer for me. Printing. searching high and low for the right kind of paper proved to be a pain. Having to settle with cartridge paper, it is a solution that I have to be happy with. Being new to Melbourne, I wish I know where to look for these printing services.

Now, at this point I was stuck. Tobias Frere-Jones, replied to my email and responded with his questions. Here I was stuck with a dilemma. Do I change my designer? Who should I choose as the ‘final’ designer? Dammit, this isn’t an episode of Bachelor.

I ended up with going ahead with Aaron. Even though Tobias was actually ‘higher’ in my list. Reason being he replied earlier and visually, I had more to display. A certainly tough decision. But I can create an alternative zine for my own contentment.

This was truly a great project, and I’m entirely satisfied with the outcome and my final product.

IZ’S DONE

Ended up printing on cartridge paper. As matte as it can be within the time constraints (and budget).

I honestly at this point did not expect a reply from him. A busy man, I’m sure he has better things to do than to reply a student designer half way around the world.

But reply he did!

Laser Printing

When you don’t want your colours to pop, use inkjet. I would post a photo of my draft zine, but I don’t have it (long story).

With that, my search for inkjet printing began. But due to time constraints, I think I have to settle with laser prints for now.

Now, I’m stuck in a dilemma. Both are great creatives. And we’re only allowed (urgh, restrictions!) to choose one.

Zhe Zine

My initial thought was, yep, poster, I’m doing a poster. But once I had that done, there was something barren about it. Almost like it’s too quick and easy. It didn’t excite me as much as it should.

So I decided, ok, guess I’ll join the bandwagon, and do a zine. I mean, tactile feedback when one explores the medium, that’s got to be exciting.

Aaron’s logo features Orange and this off-white with bold typography. And that reflects in his designs too. It is only fitting that I should have my zine styled in that manner.

Boom.

Just like that, a bold design with elements of Aaron in it.

Ok, so how about the rest, you may be asking?

In keeping things simple and clean (how I roll):

(Somehow it looks like an Ikea collateral. Which, hey, if you don’t already know, is the same typeface – Futura)

Great, and what else, ah, Aaron’s works.

Since I got it off his site (with his permission), they were in .gif. Not the greatest file format for print. But I had to make do. This makes the logo blurry when printed. This will have to do.

How to ask for permission

I saw an image of Aaron which I knew would work as my front cover image. Could probably get away with just crediting alone (I reckon).

But it never hurts to ask. And ask I did.

A shot in the dark as I had no idea if he's the right guy. But.

Tumblr Reflection

A reflection post of a reflection journal. How meta.

Having used tumblr before, I thought that this was going to be easy. Boy was I wrong.

When I first started, I assumed that we were mainly going to post about design-related topics, have a say on it and that’s it. But it goes way deeper than just that. The topics that appear as of late promotes deep thinking and having an actual (online) discussion makes this course actually more worthwhile.

In giving my thoughts and opinions on various topics and subject matters, i realise that design isn’t easy. It is not about pushing pixels on a screen or drawing shapes on a piece of paper. But there are lots of consideration involved when it comes to designing.

In addition, it also is a good way to journal my design process. It is a great way to look back on my process once I’m done with any project. 

Sometimes we don’t say everything we want to say and by journaling, we can put our thoughts down into detail (along with supporting visuals) to better illustrate our points.

One pain point is that tumblr can get overwhelming at times. When you are bombarded with visual content and your mind just wants to rest, no, there’s more content for you to look at and process.

Tumblr is a great way to also share your own content. After all, you did pour in hours into your designs, why not show it off to the world!

Also, this is my 87th post. It’s poignant for me as I’m a ‘87 kid (yes, kid), but there will be more posts to come.
