Is there gender equality?
Well no. For the longest time women were not even viewed as people, more like objects that could be bought and sold. In more resent times and in progressive counties this idea has been discarded, but not completely and instead of becoming equals with nothing to differentiate each other besides what parts we have, gender stereotyping threatens to push away equality for good. Now yes there are things besides stereotypes such as pay differences or jobs marked as unfit for women which are horrible but gender stereotyping unlike these issues, does not seem to be going away. Now looking at some stereotypes we all know are offensive such as “You hit like a girl” one could say these are what we need to abolish, anything that says that a woman inherently weaker or lesser than a man. This is what we need to dispose of but it comes in more forms than one would think. Take the idea “You can’t hit a girl” why is this not viewed as equality sexist? I do not want to promote violence in any way shape or form, however this idea that men cannot hit women pushes forward the idea that men are always stronger than women and that men must not abuse women because they are weak. We need to move away from this idea and show girls from a young age that they do not have to abide by this idea, that they can be strong. This is the only way we can truly be equals, because we know how separate but equal went... Another thing that must change is the idea that if a women sleeps around she is a slut and is to be looked down upon but a man who sleeps around is a player. This is an old idea and to great relief is already be gaining to go away, the term “fuck boy” is now deterring men from this and there is much less “slut shaming” in younger communities. Yes we have different parts, some of us bleed, some of us give birth, some of us have erections but this should not define us as people. Why can a women not rescue a man? Why can’t a boy play with a pink doll? We are all our own people with unique personalities which should not be changed to conform to gender rules.
Can we be selfless?
Is anyone really selfless? Well let’s look at charity, one of the most selfless things, or is it? Take for example a man, let’s call him Jim, volunteering at a food kitchen. Jim is receiving no pay and he does not need any volunteer hours. Most people will say he is being completely selfless, but he’s not. By helping other people he feels better about himself plus others will think of him as a good person. This is a reward, negating the idea of only helping others. Is this a bad thing? No. Although it is not completely selfless it is still helping others and helping the helper, so to speak. An example of why this is good comes from an old Jewish idea of heaven and hell being the same thing (This is not in the Torah but is still a Jewish concept). An angel brings a man to the after life to show him what is to come. The man sees two rooms and walks into one. In the room there is one long table with people sitting on both sides, the most amazing looking food is abundant along the table but, all of the people have only comical long silverware and are therefore unable to feed themselves. “This must be hell!” the man says, “No” says the angel. The angel shows him the second room, everything is the same except instead of everyone starving, the people feed each other with their silverware. This idea works for our world, by helping others we can also help ourselves.
