24 hours in flagstaff, az
we just got back from a relaxing 24 hours in the pines outside of flagstaff, az. a while back our friend recommended flagstaff nordic center because they have 2 large backcountry yurts (mongolian style living) that you can rent out. we decided it was time to give yurting a shot and it was a treat.
a shot of the inside of our yurt with laura checking out our site for the night.
to get to the yurt requires an easy 1-mile trek through gorgeous aspen groves. sadly many of these were diseased, but their decay made for a striking landscape.
the lovely laura. it dipped into the low 40s by evening so it was time to get a fire going.
i brought along my beautiful new eastwing sportsman hatchet to exercise my manliness while chopping down some logs into kindling.
but was quickly distracted by a nap next to the fireplace. this scene made me want to never live without a fireplace, ever.
as night set in, i set up my camera to attempt the ever elusive milky way. the moon was waning and i don't think we were far enough away from civilization to get a truly dark sky, but it was dark enough to capture some beautiful planets and constellations.
recap: as we enjoyed the yurt i was reminded how little effort is required from us (re: modern, affluent cultures) on a daily basis to get by. don't get me wrong, i'm not complaining about how easy life is for me, but i appreciated how everything at the yurt took time... boiling water, chopping wood, cooking, etc. it was a beautiful thing to enjoy the simplicity of living out in the wild even for just a night.
