Shovel
With my shovel, I’m pounding dirt in my back yard. Corner of the flower bed. Three feet down, two feet across. Paper shopping bag. I stapled it shut, it will do for your coffin. I thought I would be crying. Maybe I’m defective, “somewhere on the spectrum.” In the back yard feeling...
Rita Hayworth as Salome in….Salome! 1953. The costume was included in Debbie Reynolds’ mega auction of some of the most iconic Hollywood costumes. Again, it’s pseudo bellydance at best (and well, I won’t mention what it is at its worst), but it’s your typical Hollywood Exotica, but look at that costume! Those details!
Photo of two unnamed dancers at an outdoors event, probably 1970’s.
I flove the red coverup that the dancer in the back is wearing, but I really like that both these ladies are on the street wearing some sort of coverup - it’s the difference between on stage and off stage, and outdoors and indoors, and for some, comfort versus being too exposed. These were probably also homemade, but without proof, that’s only conjecture. Just look at the colors, though! /sigh
I love this clip so I wanted to feature it on its own - Diane Webber and her troupe, “The Perfumes of Araby” at a festival in 1976. This costume is similar to the one in the last post, with the tunic over her torso. It also provides a variety of 70’s costumes! Look at those harem pants beneath the skirts! The skirts! The hipscarves! The coin bras and cholis! The live music!
/explodes from all the costume goodness
